1. Background WHA 60.29, 2007
� (5) to work jointly with other organizations of the United
Nations system, international organizations, academic
institutions and professional bodies in order to provide support
to Member States in the prioritization, selection and use of
health technologies in particular medical devices;
� (6) to establish and update regularly an evidence and web-
based health technologies database to serve as a clearing
house which will provide guidance on appropriate medical
devices according to levels of care, setting, environment, and
intended health intervention, tailored to the specific needs of

National guidelines, policies or recommendations on the procurement of medical devices
� 89 Member States do not have any guidelines (53% of 168 respondent countries)� 54% of lower middle income countries (21/39 respondents) do not have any guidelines
for the procurement of medical devices.� American, African and Western Pacific have more than the half of their countries with no
national guidelines for procurement.� On the other hand Eastern Mediterranean and South-East Asia regions have more than
the half of their countries with national guidelines for procurement.

� 28% of low, lower middle and upper middle income countries (34/122 respondents) donot have procurement of medical devices carried out at the national level.
� More than 45% of the Western Pacific and European do not have procurement ofmedical devices carried out at the national level.

� 87 countries do not have any donation guidelines(55551% of 170 respondent countries).� 83 countries have where 48 countries developed nationally, 29 use WHO guidelines,
and 6 use other guidelines.� More than the half of upper-middle income countries (25/48 resp.) do not have any.� Only South East Asia and African regions have more than the half of their countries with
any policy, guideline or recommendation on donations for medical devices.
