PRAYER FOR THE FEAST OF Our Lady of Guadalupe

Loving God,

As Advent days continue, We pause to celebrate

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Honoring Our Lady’s

Message of hope, we open our hearts and Offer our prayers for all Who are in special need

Of her help and care this day.

Honoring Our Lady’s Message of peace,

We work and pray for the Unity of all people,

And true and lasting Peace on Earth.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.

Patroness of the Americas. pray for us. Patron of Mexico, pray for us. Mother of God, pray for us. Queen of Peace. Pray for us.

Amen.

The feast in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe goes back to the 16th century. Chronicles of that period tell us the story. A poor Indian named Cuauthlatohuac was bap zed and given the name Juan Diego. He was a 57-year-old widower, and lived in a small village near Mexico City. On Saturday morning December 9, 1531, he was on his way to a nearby barrio to a end Mass in honor of Our Lady. Juan was walking by a hill called Tepeyac when he heard beau ful music like the warbling of birds. A radiant cloud appeared, and within it stood an Indian maiden dressed like an Aztec princess. The lady spoke to him in his own language and sent him to the bishop of Mexico, a Franciscan named Juan de Zumarraga. The bishop was to build a chapel in the place where the lady appeared. Eventually the bishop told Juan to have the lady give him a sign. About the same me Juan’s uncle became seriously ill. This lead poor Juan to try to avoid the lady. Nevertheless the lady found Juan, assured him that his uncle would recover, and provided roses for Juan to carry to the bishop in his cape or lma. On December 12, when Juan Diego opened his lma in the bishop’s presence, the roses fell to the ground, and the bishop sank to his knees. On the lma where the roses had been appeared an image of Mary exactly as she had appeared at the hill of Tepeyac.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

St. Louise is once again joining with local parishes in a Novena of Masses in prepara on for the birth of our Savior. All are invited

to par cipate. There will be sign ups a er all the Masses on Sunday, December 10th.

Simbang Gabi is the celebra on of the annual Novena Mass, a tradi on the Filipinos brought with them from the Philippines. Simbang Gabi was adapted from the Catholic Misa de Gallo, which means “Mass of the Rooster,” to indicate it is held when the rooster crows and dates

back to 1565. During this season, Filipinos create beau ful decora ons called “parol,” paper lanterns to commemorate the Star of Bethlehem. These lanterns were used by the farmers to guide them in the dark to the Holy Mass. Tradi onally, the days events would begin two hours before dawn to give farmers a chance to hear Mass before se ng out for the fields. Choirs would sing Tagalog songs such as “Pasko-na-Naman” (It’s Christmas Again), and “Himig Pasko.” A er Mass, they would treat themselves to tradi onal puto, kutsinta and bibingka, made with sweet rice and rice dough to crown each day of the nine-day Christmas novena and to truly celebrate Christmas, the Filipino Way. (occcathol ic.com).

All Filipino families of St. Louise are also invited to assist in the planning and prepara on for our own Simbang Gabi celebra on which will be held at 7:00pm Saturday, December 16th, with a recep on to follow in Msgr. Pierce Hall.

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT GOSPEL Many people think that Saint Francis originated the Christmas crèche, but its origins go far back. The Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome has housed what is said to be relics of the cradle of Jesus since the seventh century. In me, every year during the Christmas season the reliquary (container for relics) was surrounded by an increasingly grand three-dimensional scene of the place of Jesus’ birth. Rock and trees, houses, streams, and figurines of villagers going about their daily tasks were all included. It was a very drama c presenta on. If you you’ve ever seen an elaborate model train installa on, you get the idea. The proper term for this depic on is presepio, from the La n word for “surround” or “hedge.” Over the centuries, the custom spread first to churches, and then to aristocra c homes. In Italy, whole chapels are o en set aside for the presepio, and it is not unusual to have hundreds of figures. It can some mes be a challenge to locate the Holy Family amid the crowd, almost like a Where’s Waldo? Children’s book. The oldest surviving presepio is in St. Mary Major and dates from the thirteenth century, although many pieces have been broken or lost. Saint Francis of Assisi took a decidedly crea ve step in 1233 in the village of Greccio, when he directed his followers to fill a manger with hay and tether an ox and ass nearby. He then invited the villagers to a end Mass outdoors near the crib, the worshipers themselves becoming a living presepio. By the seventeenth century, the tradi on was well-established, par cularly in Naples, and had a firm hold in Portugal, Spain, and in the Provence region of France. Today, it is not unusual to find presepios with five hundred figures, a vivid reminder of Emmanuel, God-with-us! Rev. James Field

RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God.

As it is wri en in Isaiah the prophet: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. A voice of one crying out in the desert: ”Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.”

John the Bap st appeared in the desert proclaiming a bap sm of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. People of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going to him and were being bap zed by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. John was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He fed on locusts and wild honey. And this is what he proclaimed: “One migh er than I is coming a er me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have bap zed you with water; he will bap ze you with the Holy Spirit.”

Sacrament of Reconcilia on Advent Penance Services

Can you imagine a be er way to celebrate the exhilara ng joy and radiance of Christmas than with poinse as? These cheery flowering ornamental plants are celebrated during this special season for their brightly colored foliage. With their openness and flowers, they embrace life in all its blessed richness.

At St. Louise de Marillac, let us remember those nearest and dearest to us, whether living or deceased, with these brightest of all flowers in prepara on of the birth of Jesus Christ, who is the reason for this season. Through the ages, poinse as have been given as gi s, and in this season of giving, let us honor God’s only bego en Son, the greatest gi of all.

So please join us and bring your poinse as to the Msgr. Pierce Hall pa o or Parish Center on Monday, December 11th thru Friday, December 22nd in me for inclusion at our Christmas Eve and Midnight Masses.

Without a doubt, all have heard the adage that “The joy of Christmas is in giving, not in receiving.” This is why at Christmas me we o en try to show our apprecia on to those whom we love and are indebted. We owe a special indebtedness to Almighty God, who has been so generous in gran ng us constant material and spiritual blessings. One way that we can show our apprecia on to the Lord for His boun ful blessings is by a though ul remembrance in our Christmas Offering. In this way, our Parish can con nue to grow as a community and further the teachings of Christ so that all can con nuously share in His blessings.

It is our prayer that all be as generous as possible to the Christmas collec on. This year’s Christmas collec on will help cover the expenses for parking lot maintenance and repairs, hoping the repairs will allow the use of the parking lot for two years un l it is replaced. This will also help church air condi oning replacement.

We hope everyone has received special Christmas Offering envelopes mailed with the Christmas schedules for Masses. If you misplaced it or did not receive one, addi onal envelopes are in the pews today. The Christmas schedules are in the bulle n. Certainly it is in giving that we receive and Christ will not be undone on His part to bless you for your generosity.

PARKING FOR CHRISTMAS With large crowds expected to be a ending Christmas liturgies and with Masses being celebrated concurrently at the 4:00 pm and 4:30 pm in the Church and Hall on Christmas Eve, addi onal parking will be available on the basketball courts. Your coopera on in keeping the traffic flow moving smoothly would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Prac ce situa onal awareness as part of your holiday travel plans. At Christmas me, families come together to spend this blessed season surrounded by their loved ones, and for many families, this involves some travel. Parents with young children who are hi ng the roads or the airways should be prac cing situa onal awareness to ensure their children’s safety. Situa onal awareness means staying alert and knowing what is going on around you. Keep an eye out for suspicious ac vity, and know where your family members are at all mes. Do not allow your-self to become distracted by your phone or other electronics—it only takes a minute for a child to disappear from your eye-sight.
