Over the past few years we have tried - in vain - to recycle our Green Waste and unfortunately it hasn’t worked out, probably because the only waste was fruit. The Recycling bins have being at-tracting visitors that we don’t want! Because of this we are asking boys to bring home their apple cores, banana skins (organic waste) etc from now on. Tin foil and uneaten lunches will be brought home also. Many thanks for your cooperation.

On the 9th of January 2020 we host-ed a debate in our school against Dundurrow N.S. The motion of the debate was “That social media is a force for good”. It was an excellent competition and the teams were well matched. We knew we were close but we were delighted when the ad-judicator announced that we won the debate. Dundurrow put up a good fight with valid points and good speeches. Well done to Paddy White, Patrick O’Brien and Illan Smith and the entire debating team. For the first time Scoil na mBuachailli we have made it to the semi finals. We are all very excited and are looking forward to representing our school. It will be held on the 28th of January in the West Cork Education Centre Dun-manway. The motion is “We’re not doing enough for food waste”. We wish the team the best of luck.

The only sport to have been played on the moon was golf - in 1971, astronaut Alan Shepherd hit 2 golf balls to see how far they might travel. Square watermelons can be found in Japan and they are often very expensive, with prices as high as $100. In 1950, India withdrew from the World Cup because FIFA refused to let them play barefoot. Hippos can run up to 30 km/h even though they weigh 1,500 kg

Green news by Jack Cronin and Bill Bennett

On Tuesday the 14 th of January, Ms. Forristal’s Junior Infants were work-

ing really hard to make bird feeders for the birds that live near the school.

Firstly they cut oranges in half and poured out all of the oranges bits and

juice. They did this so they’d be able to put the bird food into the oranges

for the birds to have a container to eat out of. They got a bowl of seeds and

started taking turns pouring seeds into the oranges. They also had skewers

to keep all of the food inside without any of it falling out but still leaving

space for the birds toeat from. It was about a spoonful of seeds that the boys

put in so they would all have turns to pour the seeds in and feel what the

seeds felt like. Now they will be able to put the bird feeders out so the birds

won’t have to worry about gathering food because it’s normally hard

around this time of year due to the temperature and lack of available food.

Photos on page 6 Recently we held our Open Day and en-rolling for next school year 2020/2021. It was a great success and huge numbers attended. The boys were great! The boys gave the tour and manned all the stalls and spoke in each classroom along the way. The parents and children got an oppor-tunity to see what life in SnB is like and got a glimpse of some of our curricular and extra curricular activities. We then finished our tour in the hall where there were different exhibitions that the parents could look at. Thanks to the Tour Guides, the sound engineers, all the boys who spoke on the day - from Juniors to Rang 6. A special thanks to their teachers who prepared them and also to Thelma, Noreen and Finbarr for their help. Thanks also to Ms. Regina Fitzmaurice, Mrs. Elaine Connolly and Ms. Niamh MacAuley for their work with the tour guides. Thanks also to Margaret Deegan. So far 33 boys have enrolled for Junior Infants next year. More children have enrolled in other classes, in our Early Years and Second ASD class for next year also. Our Early Years class now has 5 boys attending and one boy - the last boy - is enrolling in the coming weeks.

On Monday the 20th January elev-en 4th Class boys went to Ballinacar-riga for a hurling blitz. We started off by playing Skibbereen. We scored first but then they came back and beat us 5-1. We still had a

chance of getting to the final. Our next match was against Bantry A. We beat them 3-1. After that we played Bantry B team. This time we were the ones who were disappointed but we still had a great day. Thanks to Mr. Daly and Ms. Fitz-maurice, Mr. Whooley and Mr. Hancock for looking after us and brining us to the games. Children are not allowed to walk in the staff carpark - even if accompanied by an adult. Please use the main school yard for access. Also during the school day, parents are not permitted to use the Staff Carpark. It is too dangerous. Parents can park in the Clonakilty Car-park if they wish. After school - e.g. after Chess or Basketball or Sher-pa, parents may use the Car-park.

Lately a number of parents are parking on the double yellow lines outside the O’Rahilly Street entrance - endangering your child’s life in the process. Please DO NOT PARK THERE. The Board of Management has a duty of care for all the children and are presently in contact with the relevant authorities - the Gardaí, the traffic warden etc - to assist us with this very dangerous practice. Please also DO NOT PARK outside the main gate of the school on the bypass.

The star dome was amazing. It came from the Blackrock Observatory in Cork. It reminded me of a Planetari-um I once visited when on holidays in Poland. The star dome was like a cinema but the screen was in a

dome all around me. It showed all the star patterns. I learned how the northern star never moves. Each class got to spend 30 minutes in it. I really would recommend trying it if you ever get a chance. Thanks to Mrs. Marie Hayes for organis-ing the Star Dome to come to our school. by Wojtek Kusal. The Star Dome was paid for out of the money collected for drama in September.

On the Tuesday 29th January 6th class’s Debating team went to Dunmanway for the sem– fiinals of the West Cork Debat-ing League where they faced Barryroe NS. Our team consisted of Paddy White, Illan Smith and Patrick O’ Brien. Our team’s captain was Paddy White. It took place in the Dunmanway Education Centre. The topic up for debate was ‘We are not doing enough to end food Waste’. Our team had the difficult task of pro-posing this motion. We ran a mock de-bate in school prior to the real debate. Our sub team of Peter, Gary and Oisin

had many of the same arguments as

Barryroe. However, on the day our motion was defeated and Barryroe NS progress onto the final of the West Cork debating League. We wish Barryroe NS best of luck in the final. After the debate we went to the canteen where we got crisps, a chocolate bar and

orange juice. We arrived back on the bus not sad because we knew we did a great

job!!! We would like to thank all 19 boys on the team who contributed to

getting us to the Semi Finals, from speech writers to rebuttal writers to the

sub team you’re help was much appreci-

ated. Thanks to Mrs. Marie

Hayes for guid-ing us on our

path to the semi finals and who

gave us our love of debating in 4th class. Also thanks to Mr. Harrington,

Ms. MacAuley and the bus driver of course. On behalf of our class we would

like congratulate our team on their suc-cess at reaching the semi- finals. Best of

luck to next year’s team. We hope ye go all the way! By Bill Bennett and Eoin
