Gospel Mt 17: 1-9

Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.

And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun

and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them,

conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Lord, it is good that we are here.

If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them,

then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased;

listen to him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate

and were very much afraid. But Jesus came and touched them, saying,

“Rise, and do not be afraid.” And when the disciples raised their eyes,

they saw no one else but Jesus alone. As they were coming down from the mountain,

Jesus charged them, “Do not tell the vision to anyone

until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

Padre Gary Zender

Dear Friends of St. Louise, You will recall that in January, Pope Francis called for every Catholic to deepen their knowledge and reading of the Holy Scriptures. In response to that call, I promised that I would dedicate one bulletin column a month to the Bible for a year. Here is my third installment. What does it mean when we say that the Bible is divinely inspired? We mean that the Holy Spirit “breathed” such an influence on the human authors of the Holy Scriptures that we can make the claim that God is the author of the biblical books. This notion of God inspiring the books that we now call the Bible is not unique to Christians. In fact, it was formative of the identity of the Hebrew people and of their religion over a long period of time. For many centuries, the sacred stories of the Jews were passed from generation to generation through oral tradition. Gradually, in many cases, the sacred authors put the oral tradition into writing. In other cases, the biblical text lets us know that the prophet himself put into writing the communication he received from God. Over time, the Jewish people came to believe that certain books were divinely inspired, and these books, which we now call the Old Testament (or Hebrew Scriptures) formed their religious practice and way of life – so much so, that they came to be known as “people of the Book.” To be sure, the Church has always acknowledged also the role of the human authors of the Scriptures. Just how the Holy Spirit inspired the sacred authors has been described in numerous ways over the centuries; but the common teaching is that the human factor in these writings is subordinate to the divine factor. In Acts of the Apostles 4:5, for instance, we read that God through the Holy Spirit utters the words of the psalms through the mouth of David. The Scriptures are the Word of God that we can hear and read. Jesus is the Word made flesh that we can hear and see. Both are the presence of God in our very humanity . . . every part of it. The Church Fathers believed that God worked even through the sacred authors’ grammatical errors! What a sign of hope for all of us, that God would choose to work with and even through our human imperfections. And oh by the way, how are you doing on reading at least a verse or two of the Scriptures each day? If you haven’t done so yet, Lent is a great time to start! Next time: What do we mean by the canon of the Scriptures? Fr. Gary Zender

St. Louise School News Students Strengthen Their Faith During the Lenten Season All students in our parish school receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent, going to Confession during a school day this month. This is just one of many ways St. Louise School students develop their faith at a level unmatched by children who attend public schools. Students are not only allowed to pray at a Catholic school and have daily religion classes, but experiences such as going to Confession and attending a Stations of the Cross prayer service during school hours make a Catholic school education extremely valuable. To find out more about the benefits of a St. Louise School education, especially if you have a child who will be between the ages of 4-14 this Fall, please contact our School Office (425-746-4220) to set up an appointment to meet with our school principal, Dan Fitzpatrick.

2020 Parish Stewardship of Treasure Commitment Renewal There will not be a formal Stewardship of Treasure pledge drive for our English-speaking parishioners for calendar 2020 be-cause of the Archdiocesan Called to Serve as Christ Campaign. As described in Fr. Gary’s letter to all parish households (visit www.stlouise.org), those who made a pledge to the Stewardship of Treasure renewal in 2019 will simply have their pledge rolled over to 2020, unless we hear otherwise from you. This means if you pledged a specific amount every week/month/year for 2019, that same amount and frequency of contribution will be rolled over for 2020. If you didn’t make a Stewardship pledge last year and would like to do so this year, or if you want to increase, decrease, or cancel your 2020 rollover pledge, please go online to www.stlouise.org/treasure or scan the QR code to submit your pledge. The Hispanic Leadership recom-mended we continue with making their commitment of Steward-ship of Treasure by completing pledge cards at Mass, which is what we have done. If you have any questions, please contact Barbara Abbott, 425-214-5471 or [email protected], or Jonathan Taasan, 425-214-5473 or [email protected]. Thank you for your faithful and generous support of St. Louise Parish.

CALLED to SERVE as CHRIST Campaign As of February 20, St. Louise Parish have raised $1,688,484 or 72% of our $2.3 million goal. That’s a potential of $253,273 parish share that will go towards our Building Fund. We’re at 28.9% participation. It is exciting to see us inch our way to 30% participation – we

can do it! If you haven’t had the chance to make a decision to support the campaign, will you help us exceed 30-35% partici-pation by completing a pledge form and making a financial or prayerful commitment? We ask anyone who has yet to make a gift to the campaign to join us in doing so by donating online at www.calledtoserveaschrist.org/donate. Remember, no gift

is too small – equal sacrifice not equal gifts. Thank you.

As of February 1, the overall campaign surpassed the

halfway mark in raising over $52 million towards the $100 million goal. The total number of parishes that have completed the campaign is 54%. Many of the 47 parishes in Wave 2019 of the Called to Serve as Christ campaign have wrapped up their active appeal phase with an in-pew appeal at all Masses. Other parishes, not yet at benchmark percentages, are continuing to engage lead gift families in personal visits to answer questions, discuss the campaign goals, and obtain pledges. Most of the parishes in Wave 2019 have wrapped up their appeal phase. One last follow-up mailing is going out now to all parishioners who have not yet participated in the campaign. No gift is too small, and participation is an important element of success in

any capital campaign.

Preparations for the 72 parishes in Wave 2020 (the largest wave of the campaign) begun with data collection and database preparations. Please keep the parishes, pastors, staff, and lay leaders of the Wave 2020 parishes in your prayers.

We are so grateful to our many benefactors who have helped us reach this important step along the way.
