WORSHIP

AA MESSAGE FROM THE PAROCHIAL VICAR “It is already the second week of Lent and I pray and hope that your Lent is off to a good start. As we hear in this weekend’s First and Second Readings about sacrifices, Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac to God and in turn too, for our sake, God would not spare His only Son for our Redemption. Sacrifices are a huge part of Lenten practices and they are woven into the three acts of Lent: Fasting, Almsgiving and Prayer. As we make sacrifices during this period, no matter how little or big they might be, I enjoin you to please always unite it with that of Jesus Christ on the Cross, in that way, we understand its meaning and it becomes redemptive for us. Our sacrifices during this Lenten season will not be in vain, Amen! Speaking of sacrifices, my family in Nigeria, both immediate and extended in union with my home parish and my entire village community have been grateful to God for hearing their prayers and crowning their sacrifices with enduring fruits. In the history of my home parish in Nigeria, we have never had a seminarian go through the seminary and emerge a priest until on the Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Blessed Virgin Mary, August 15th, 2020 when I was ordained a priest of the Catholic Church. Marking this great milestone and in thanksgiving to God for letting their prayers and sacrifices bear fruit, my home parish is planning to receive me and have me say a Mass of Thanksgiving with them this April. Wanting to celebrate this in a big way, they are asking for financial help from people of goodwill. I communicated this to our pastor, Fr. Dave and he asked me to inform you, our beloved parishioners, to help the parish of Holy Name raise some financial assistance for my home parish in Nigeria. Fr. Dave is asking that we have a collection in this endeavor in the coming week. Thank you from the bottom of my heart as you consider this and make that little financial sacrifice to help my home parish. May God always help us with His grace and strengthen our hearts and will as we continue in our Lenten journey, Amen! Happy Second Sunday of Lent! Fr. Stan Please, remember that I will never send you a personal email or text or call you on the phone asking for your financial assistance for my home parish or for any other reason. If you receive anything personal that seems to be from me or a parish staff, disregard it and please call the rectory for confirmation. Thank you!"

DIOCESE OF SPRINGFIELD 2021 LENTEN REGULATIONS

1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of abstinence from meat as well as days of fast, when only one full meal is allowed. On days of fast two other meatless meals may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal.

2. The other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. 3. The obligation to abstain from meat begins at fourteen (14) years of age. 4. The obligation to fast begins at eighteen (18) years of age and ends at fifty-nine (59) years of age. 5. Although the faithful may excuse themselves for a just cause from these laws of fast and abstinence, there is an obligation to substitute another penance and no Catholic should lightly excuse himself/herself from this obligation in the Lenten season. 0907 – Page 4

Lenten Mission – Night of Reflection (Revised date) March 6th in the church 5:30-6:15p.m., (break from 6:15-6:30), Mission continues from 6:30-7:00p.m. Fr. Jordan Zajac, O.P. is a Dominican Friar who teaches in the English Department at Providence College. Before joining the Dominicans, he earned a doctorate in Shakespearean drama at UMass Amherst and discovered his calling to the priesthood and religious life through his experience at the Newman Center (where he got to know a certain Deacon, now Fr. David Aufiero!). Fr. Jordan was ordained to the priesthood in May 2020, in the midst of the Covid-19 lockdown, and his Lenten Mission talks will focus on this “age of sacrifice” we’re living through: the ongoing impact that the pandemic is having, as well as the opportunities it affords for our spiritual lives. For as the poet Paul Claudel once remarked, “Jesus did not come to explain away suffering, or to remove it. He came to fill it with His presence.” Through suffering and sacrifice, we discover the hope that Presence supplies.

Operation Rice Bowl Bowls are available at the doors and will be collected at all Masses on Palm Sunday. Operation Rice Bowl helps you reach out to our brothers and sisters in need in the US and around the world. Your prayers, fasting and almsgiving this Lenten season will help Catholic Relief Services continue to provide life-saving assistance in nearly one hundred countries. CRS works on our behalf to care for the poorest in our world and to end global poverty.
