ST. PETER PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

We, the believers of St. Peter Parish, having our beginnings as the earliest Catholic Church of the Archdiocese of New Orleans on the Northshore, in response to God's call, come together:

to love God and one another to worship as a faith community to be God's hands, heart and mind and to provide for our community's spiritual and

physical needs

In doing this, we glorify God and help realize His reign on earth. While rejoicing in the experience of our pilgrimage, we must ever keep in mind our ultimate destination through our faithful stewardship of time, talent and treasure. Called to be a prayerful and hospitable Catholic family of living faith, we welcome and invite all people to share in our unique gifts of the Holy Spirit.

“Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy.”

Jesus to St. Faustina Kowalska Divine Mercy in My Soul, Diary [699]

WHAT IS MERCY? Our late St. Pope John Paul II of happy memory defined mercy in his Encyclical, Dives in Misericordia, as “love’s second name.”

WHY MERCY? Fr. Michael Gaitley states, “in other words, mercy is love when it meets poverty, weak‐

ness, brokenness and sin.  It’s the power of love to bring good out of such evil.  And because our time is marked by more suffering and sin than any other, for this very reason, now is the time of mercy; now is the time when mercy must be proclaimed more than ever before.  This was John Paul’s belief and the insight at the core of his ‘pastoral soul’ as he witnessed the unprecedented and growing darkness of our time.” (The Second Greatest Story Ever Told)

WHY NOW? St. John Paul II proclaimed a Jubilee Year of Mercy in the year 2000 seeing the urgent need to proclaim and witness to mercy in this contemporary world.  According to Pope Francis, “it is more pertinent than ever and deserves to be taken up one again in this Holy Year.”

BE ON THE LOOKOUT - “MERCY IN ACTION”

Starting next week, a “Mercy In Action” will be announced each week for all parishioners to exercise mercy, so together we may experience all graces offered during this most Holy Year of Mercy as individuals and as a family here at St. Peter Parish, united as one in Christ.

History of the Early Church’s Catechumenate (RCIA)

DID YOU KNOW???

The Sign of the Cross was included in the early Church’s Rite of Acceptance in the fourth century. It was made on the forehead. From St. Augustine’s Sermon 215.5: “Do not hesitate, do not be ashamed. When you first believed, you received the sign of Christ on your forehead, the home of shame. Remember your forehead and do not be afraid of another man'’ tongue...Do not then be afraid of the shame of the Cross." The forehead was believed to be the home of shame because it is there that blush reveals shame. The Sign of the Cross on the Catechumen’s forehead should teach him never to be ashamed of the cross. The Sign of the Cross had another symbolism, probably more ancient than that of the fourth century. Servants and soldiers bore a mark on the hand or the forehead to show to whom they owed service. The Christian was signed with the Cross to show that he/she belonged to Christ. Source: The Awe-inspiring Rites by Edward Yarnold, S.J.
