special guest is asked to preach (usually about a 45 minute

homily). In the evening, there is evening prayer and if the

weather permits, a procession with the statue of the

Immaculate Conception through the streets. It will be a

very full trip with lots to do each day. Please pray for the

renewal of faith in the hearts of all those who attend these

celebrations. Thank you.

Christmas masses:

Please plan ahead about which mass you will be going to

this Christmas. We have added a 6:00 p.m. mass at each

parish, so I would encourage you to attend that mass if you

always found the 4:00 p.m. mass a bit crowded. There will

also be mass at midnight at each parish and then of course

the masses on Christmas day. Please see the church paper

or the card you received for the full details about the mass

and confession schedule.

Have a great week everyone and see you soon.

Q. I am a bit confused. In the Old Testament

the prophet Isaiah wrote "The virgin will be

with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him

Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). However, (Luke 1:31) tells us the

angel Gabriel says to the Blessed Mother: "You will be with

child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the

name Jesus.”

A. We need not be confused. Isaiah revealed His identity,

Gabriel revealed His name. Translating from one language to

another can become a bit tricky and sometimes a bit confusing.

This can become compounded with our English translations of

the Holy Bible. We must be careful about the words. We do,

however, need to recognize Isaiah used the words “They shall

call him” and Gabriel used the words “ you are to give him the

name.” The original Hebrew word that Isaiah used was

translated into Greek, and then translated into Latin, and finally

into English. Isaiah used a Hebrew word which is translated

“Immanuel” in English, which means “God with us.” The

important thing here is Isaiah is prophesying the coming

Messiah would be God incarnate.

Mary was given a name from Gabriel as the name by which

God in His human form (Immanuel) was to be known. To

Isaiah and his Hebrew audience (800 years before Christ), the

Messiah’s given name would have been of far less importance

than the fact of His divine identity. This revelation was, and is,

a cause for great anticipation. We, too, now can celebrate this

great excitement as we remember the anticipation over His first

coming while we also look forward to His promised return.

Happy Advent!

St. Michael Cemetery Clean-Up

On Saturday, November 5, a team of nearly forty volunteers gathered at Saint Michael’s Cemetery to perform the annual autumn cleanup. Starting with an 8:00 a.m. Mass at the church officiated by Father Joe, the volunteers proceeded down to the cemetery to begin the task of “deep” cleaning of Saint Michael’s. Unlike past cemetery cleanings, this time all of the graves were stripped of all items. These same items were placed in marked plastic bags and placed in storage. Dried flowers, leaves, and other debris were also removed. Several volunteers took on the task of trimming bushes and clearing unsightly brush. Every volunteered worked very hard, and it took less than three hours to make the cemetery look fantastic. This effort was done to in order to keep Saint Michael’s a beautiful and dignified final resting place for the deceased members of our parish family. NOTE: If you had any item that was removed from your loved one’s grave and wish it returned, please contact the Parish Office or Joe Stevens at 586-727-7236. Any item not claimed by December 31 will be disposed of.

Happy Advent!

Another Christmas Season is upon us and we all find it so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season. There are gifts to buy, and decorations and trees to put up. All of this is exciting and fun-filled; a time for celebration. All of this is good if kept in perspective regarding the real reason for the season.

God is giving us a gift of Himself, sending His Son in a special way, at first humble, hidden and small on Christmas Day. In the end profoundly saving us all from our sinful ways, changing this world forever.

Let us this Christmas, keep those in our prayers, who live in worry for their loved ones far away in harm’s way in the armed services. Our service men and women have given up their celebration to protect and serve this country, those of us here at St. Augustine and Holy Family.

I ask you during this beautiful season of happiness, to bring a little cheer to those who serve by reaching out to them with a letter of thanks or a card, wishing them well and the prayers and thoughts of our community.

If you can find it in your heart to reach out to those families you may know in our community whose children, husbands and fathers, wives and mothers, serve us all. Let them know we stand by them and their loved ones.

Also, please don’t forget to thank and pray for our veterans. They are here all around us in our churches and community. When you see them wish them a Blessed Christmas.

God bless you all and make this the best Advent Season you have ever had.

Yours, a brother in Christ,

Michael C. McHugh, Parish Council Representative

Holy Family Mass Intentions

Intercessory prayer reflects God’s own character of outgoing love and mercy. God wants us to think like He does, and praying for others helps us to think beyond ourselves and to grow in compassion for others. Please pray for:

The Faith Formation program is in need of

updated technology.

We have been good stewards of the TV’s

we were given in the early 1900’s and

feel we have used every drop of life in

them, but it is getting increasingly diffi-

cult to show DVD’s to the kids on our out-

dated equipment.

Flat screen TV’s of 32 inch size or larger

would be much appreciated.

Thank you! And God bless!

“Advent: the time to listen for footsteps – you can’t

hear footsteps when you’re running yourself.”

~Bill McKibben

As we enter into this Advent season, there are many

school happenings in addition to the “hustle and bustle”

of the holidays. Here are some updates from 7th/8th

grade:

As tradition, our eighth graders recently designed

their class shirts. They chose royal blue as their class

color and on the front of the shirt, they chose the

quote “Keep Calm and Graduate.” I hope this quote

will be a constant reminder to them to keep calm and

enjoy all of their “last” experiences as a class.

7th and 8th graders recently signed up for Academic

Olympics events. We will begin preparing in

December for the February competition.

We will also begin classroom spelling bees. Class

winners will advance to the school spelling bee in

December, and the school winner will advance from

there.

And to add to the busyness, the students are also busy

rehearsing for our school’s annual Advent program.

Many of our 7th and 8th graders have acting roles in

addition to learning the music.

December is sure to be eventful, but it is my hope that all

of us will set aside time for prayer and reflection so that

we can hear the footsteps and truly be prepared for

Christmas.

“Behold, I make all things new.”

Revelation 5:21

From His throne in heaven to the depths of your heart, these

words of Jesus are an invitation for you to receive the new

life that He alone can give. He is longing to elevate your life

above the things of this world – to help you overcome fear,

anxiety, confusion and doubt. He wants to break the things that

hold you down and give you freedom from sin. He is calling you

to follow Him and enter into a transforming experience with His

love, grace, and mercy! He can make you new! This summer,

travel with the teens of St. Augustine and Holy Family Parish

to the Catholic Youth Conference and experience the joy of

following Christ and being

elevated by His love.
