Second Sunday in Lent Worship Guide: Sunday, February 28, 2021 Sunday Worship Schedule: Due to the number of COVID cases in Floyd/Clark Counties as well as the state, the decision was made to suspend in-person worship until March 7th. Look for more information in upcoming communications/publications. In the meantime, all are invited to join us on-line for worship Sunday mornings at 9:00 am at trinityna.org. Message Lenten Series: Just Walk . . . Walk the Line Rev. Chris Neikirk Basic Theme: The life as a Christian is often referred to as a walk. In ancient times, walking was the primary mode of transportation. So, if you were going to travel from one place to another, you walked. Life with Christ is certainly a journey and God wants to take us from one place to another – from a place of sin, emptiness, and loneliness to a place of holiness, fulfillment, and purpose. It is not a walk that we take alone. Sermon Snapshot (Key Points): Nicodemus took a midnight walk to meet with Jesus, the one he knew to be of God even when his peers refused to believe. As a Pharisee, Nicodemus ‘walked the line’ of religious tradition and ritual, and by all accounts was assured entrance to the Kingdom of God. However, Jesus teaches a new perspective on faith and obedience, and we learn that ‘walking the line’ that man has laid before us often means missing the truth. So What? What are your perceptions about salvation? Do you find yourself walking the line of religious duty, yet feeling empty, spiritually void, or burned out? Does concern for your reputation affect your actions? Do you know what God’s expectations are of you? Are you willing to change course and walk the line that Jesus prepares for you? Call to Worship Leader: We would be perfectly happy if our path were faultless, if we were always in step with God. People: This is my commandment: That you love one another. Leader: God, has given us commandments that we may live as effectively as possible. With our eyes fixed on doing the right thing, we shall never be put to shame. People: You are to love one another in the same way as I have loved you. Leader: O Lord, touch our lips with your saving grace, People: that our lives may declare your praise! Message Lenten Series: Just Walk . . . Walk the Line Rev. Chris Neikirk

Basic Theme: The life as a Christian is often referred to as a walk.

With our eyes fixed on

doing the right thing, we shall never be put to shame. People: You are to love one another in the same way as I have loved you. Leader: O Lord, touch our lips with your saving grace, People: that our lives may declare your praise!

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. AMEN.

Gospel Reading John 3:1-15; John 15:9-17 (New International Version)

Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” 4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” 5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” 9 “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked. 10 “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man.14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”

9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other.

UTL Comes Back Again Good news! The UTL class will resume “Wednesday school” on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at 3:00 pm in the sanctuary. For the first few weeks we will be studying the insights contained in the book, Senior Moments – Prayer Talks with God about Aging Grace-fully by Bernadette McCarver Snyder. This is a little gem of a book with 53 short essays (1-2 pages) suggesting how we seniors might deal with situations, questions, and mindsets we may have or come upon. For the first few weeks, at least, you will receive an email from us with 2-3 of these passages with titles such as “Get a Life?”, “When in a Fog”, and “If the Shoe Fits”. We are excited about seeing you all again and look forward to these times of study, discussion, and fellowship. ~ Judy and Guy Wall
