Don’s Doodling’s As you know, Pope Benedict XVI has declared a special celebration of a “Year of Faith,” from October 11, 2012, until November 24, 2013, which I wrote about on October 7. As part of that celebration Bishop Paprocki has decreed that a Plenary Indulgence for the temporal punishment of sins may be obtained at various times and in various churches throughout this year. The Plenary Indulgence may be obtained for one’s own intention or for the souls of the deceased faithful. The conditions are to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist, and praying for the intentions of the Pope on one or more of various occasions (but not more than once on each of these days except in danger of death). The dates on which this may be obtained include the following: December 8, 2012 – Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception December 12, 2012 – Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe December 25, 2012 – Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord January 1, 2013 – Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God January 6, 2013 – Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord February 22, 2013 – Feast Day of the Chair of St. Peter the Apostle March 31, 2013 – Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord April 7, 2013 – Sunday of Divine Mercy May 19, 2013 – Pentecost Sunday May 26, 2013 – Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity June 2, 2013 – Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) June 7, 2013 – Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus June 22, 2013 – Memorial of Sts. Marriage Encounter St. Paul tells us that we are blessed and chosen by God; we are called with a purpose to live according to the will of God so that

we might give praise and glory to God. Does the way you live your life and especially your marriage give praise and glory to God? Let God transform your marriage relationship so that you can live according to God’s will and give praise and glory to Him. The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend in this area is on February 1 to 3. To register, or for more information, call 314-469-7317 or go online to www.stl-wwme.org.

Interested in Joining the

Catholic Church? The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the process through which the unbaptized and those baptized in other faith denominations join the Catholic Church. The first stage of the process is Inquiry. It’s a time to ask questions and decide if you want to delve further into the Catholic teachings. Inquiry sessions will be held on December 6 and December 13 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Br. Martin Room (lower level of the parish office). If you are interested in joining us, or just have questions, please call Carol Seifert at 222-4077 or 224-7143.

Former or Drifting Catholics Researchers from Benedictine University are seeking drifting and former Catholics from our diocese to complete a brief online survey, which will help them understand why some have left or distanced themselves from the Catholic Church. Do you have family members, friends, co-workers or other acquaintance who are former Catholics? Please encourage them to complete this short online survey. An analysis of survey responses will be made public and shared with the Dioceseof Springfield in Illinois. Respondents can remain anonymous. All responses are kept confidential by Benedictine University. To participate in this study or for additional information, please visit www.ben.edu/catholicsurvey or call (630) 829-6460

In addition to these times, the Plenary Indulgence may be obtained in certain places or on certain occasions; A. When attending at least three sermons during a parish mission, or at least three lessons on the Documents of the Second Vatican Council or the articles of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. B. When visiting a papal basilica, a Christian catacomb, a cathedral church or a holy site designated by the local ordinary for the Year of Faith, and participate in a sacred celebration, or at least remain for a period of time in prayer, concluding with the Lord’s Prayer, the Profession of Faith, and invocations to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints. This may be fulfilled in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, IL. C. When participating in a celebration of the Eucharist or the Liturgy of the Hours on any of the days designated, adding the Profession of Faith. This may be fulfilled in any sacred place in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois. D. On any day one chooses, when making a pious visit to the baptistery or place in which one received the Sacrament of Baptism, and there renew one’s baptismal promises. Finally, at the conclusion of the Year of Faith on November 24, 2013, Bishop Paprocki will impart the Papal blessing with the Plenary Indulgence at the 10:00 a.m. Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield.

Safe Environment We’ve had a good number of you coming for the Protecting God’s Children training sessions. Many parishes are having difficulty getting everyone trained before the deadline of January 1, 2013. And so, Bishop Paprocki is extending the date by which compliance is expected to April 1, 2013. So we will be having more training sessions available after the 1st of the year. Thanks for your efforts to comply with this training in order to have our parish safe for children and all.

Good Samaritan Home Many parishioners know that we at St. Francis are responsible for celebrating a weekly Mass at Good Samaritan Home every Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. In order to have this Mass weekly, we are dependent upon a number of volunteers to assist with the music, readings, and especially with going to rooms to wheel residents to the Chapel and back. At the present time, we are in need of several people to help our faithful volunteer crew. This would entail a commitment of time from approximately 9:00-11:00 a.m. each Thursday morning. This Mass is so important for the residents. They look forward to hearing God’s word and receiving the Eucharist each Thursday. The work is not difficult and it is very rewarding. If you would like more information, please call Ginny Greving (223-3088). God Bless you.

Communion Ministers Needed Here in Quincy, each parish is responsible for the ordinary care of at least one nursing home. As mentioned in the above article, St. Francis has the pastoral care of the Catholic residents at Good Samaritan Home. One of the aspects of that care is bringing Holy Communion to the Catholics who cannot get out for Mass on Sunday. Each Sunday morning one or two St. Francis parishioners take Communion to the residents after 8:00 a.m. Mass. Presently they have been assigned through 2012. We would like to have several more teams so that individuals would not be on call more than twice every two months. All you need to do is inform Ginny Greving (223-3088) that you are willing to volunteer for this service. Please let us know as soon as possible so you can be included in the new schedule. Thank you so much!

Retrouvaille The St. Louis Retrouvaille Program starts with a weekend February 8-10, 2013, (Friday night thru Sunday) and has 6 follow-up sessions. If you are facing financial difficulties, we can work with you. For confidential information about Retrouvaille, call toll free 1-800-470-2230, or visit www.HelpOurMarriage.com.

We will post in the bulletin the monthly and year to date totals beginning with the month of January. The Parish Center Committee would like to give a very special thank you to the 200 plus volunteers who have helped and continue to help make this campaign a success.

Fr. Thomas More and John Fisher June 29, 2013 – Solemnity of the Apostles Peter and Paul August 15, 2013 – Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary November 1, 2013 – Solemnity of All Saints
