FEEDING BODIES
FUELING SUCCESS
WHAT’S NEW AT KENMORE Exciting New Partners
We are welcoming Whale Scout to the YMCA Summer Food Program this
year! Whale Scout has one mission: to protect Pacific Northwest whales
through land-based conservation experiences. Run entirely by volunteers,
this great organization teaches the public about their Puget Sound
neighbors as well as participates in habitat restoration projects around King
County. Because the first visit to Kenmore was such a hit with cool whale
figures, a life-size orca skull and wearable dorsal fins, Whale Scout will be
coming back!
To learn more and find the nearest viewing spot, visit www.whalescout.org .
Whale Scout will be visiting once again on Thursday, August 13.

The Y of Greater Seattle Meal Program is proud to announce a brand new
website! Please visit us at http://www.seattleymca.org/Pages/Meal-

VEGGIE PASTA
Lighten up your next pasta dinner with the addition of fresh asparagus and snap peas! Recipe adapted from delish.com.
1 package whole-grain rotini
8 oz. asparagus
1 bag snap peas
1 tbsp. olive oil
1 small onion
1 lemon
1/2 c. freshly grated Pecorino
Romano cheese
1/4 c. fresh basil leaves
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. coarsely ground black
pepper
Directions
Heat large covered saucepot of
salted water on high to boiling.
Add pasta and cook as label
directs, adding asparagus and
snap peas when 3 minutes of
cooking time remain.
Meanwhile, in 10-inch nonstick
skillet, heat oil on medium until
hot. Add onion and cook 10 to 12
minutes or until tender and
browned. From lemon, grate 1
teaspoon peel and squeeze 2
tablespoons juice.
Reserve 1/2 cup pasta cooking
water; drain pasta and
vegetables. In large serving bowl,
toss pasta and vegetables with
cooking water, onion, lemon peel
and juice, Romano, basil, 1/2
teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon
coarsely ground black pepper.
SUMMER SPELLING CHALLENGES
Summer is a time of fun and adventure, but it is also a time to keep the
brain working too! All activities from JumpStart.
Beat the Clock: Set a timer and see how many words your child can write
down in one minute. Have your child write down as many words as he or
she can spell with the following endings: ack, ath, est, ock, ump, and, ing,
ick, ock, ish, ent.
Making Words : Write the following letter combinations on index cards:
an, ap, at, ed, en, et, ib, ip, og, op, ug, un. Then, give your child five
consonant letter cards—for example, b, c, r, d, l. Ask your child to choose a
consonant card and add it to a combination card to make a word.
Unscramble the Word : Give your child three letters, and ask him or her
to unscramble the letters to make a word. Explain that sometimes you can
make more than one word with the same three letters. For example, with
the letters a, p, and n, your child can make the words pan and nap.
MAKING MAGIC AT HOME
In honor of magician Jeff Evans,
learn some magic at home and
impress all your friends!
You will need a coin and a
table.
Set the coin on the table. Use
your hand, palm down, to
sweep the coin towards you on the table. Quickly sweep it off the table and into your lap, but ...
keeping your fingers together as though you are still holding it, bring
your hand up to your mouth, blow on the 'coin' and open your hand to
reveal you have made it disappear.
MEET YOUR VOLUNTEERS!
Meet the summer lunch volunteers who make our Kenmore site so special! Alina Vilaysom is currently a sophomore at Western Washington University studying human services and anthropology. She will be staying in Thailand
for a few months this upcoming winter to study abroad. Alina likes to meet many people through traveling and the summer meals programs!
Ashleen O’Brien Ashleen is a 22 year old recent graduate who majored in Political Science and Environmental Studies. She is passionate about art and social justice, and will be moving to Mexico at the end of the summer to teach English at a University.
Caren Chaffee is a Kenmore homeowner and a mother of a 16 year old
daughter Izzy who is her love and inspiration! Her career has mostly
consisted of working in the medical field until recently when she went back
to school to earn a degree in Social Health Services; she will graduate in
December and hopes to work within her new field. It is her desire to give
back to the community where she’s watched her friends and family grow.
