Chairman's Message A promoters dream has unfolded with the

staging of this years Farrer Football League Grand Final with seven of our eight clubs being represented in either football or netball matches.

My congratulations to the four teams involved - Ariah Park Mirrool and The Rock Yerong Creek in the Firsts and Cootamundra and Marrar in the Reserves. itis been ·a long time between drinks for both the senior teams and knowing these clubs as I do they have both worked up a pretty big thirst for the Premiership trophy.

A big thank you to our major sponsors Mercantile Mutual plus our support sponsors Carlton United Breweries, Coke, The Rules Club, Kendell Airlines, K&J Trophies, Fearnes Buses, Seona Madison, Weston

Milling and Harringtons Menswear. We have again been well supported by our

media outlets in the Daily Advertiser, Prime Television, Radio 2WG and our own media man in iJocki Currie.

A special mention to our administration staff Wayne Gardner, Stuart Fraser and Tony Hackett for the important work they do for the association, to our Tribunal members headed by John Pattison, the Riverina Umpires Association for the professional approach they have for the game and to our representative squad led by Laurie Pendrick on a job well done.

And so to all the teams involved in the day, both football and netball, good luck to you all.

Robert Turner. Farrer League Chairman.

MERCANTILE MUTUAL MVAFA FARRER LEAGUE

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW by "Jock" Currie

For the first time ever, The Rock-Yerong Creek and Ariah Park-Mirrool will meet in a finals' match. The former, t~e "Magpies", were first into today's grand final, after a six points second semi-final win over the minor premiers, and premiers for the last two seasons, Marrar. Ariah Park-Mirrool, the "Brown Bombers" took the long route, with a win in the first semi-final, over Cootamundra, and then a convincing victory over Marrar in last week's preliminary final. With respective margins of 27 points and 45 points, APM looked most impressive premiership threats, especially their strong finishes which have yielded tallies of 8.1 O and 7. 7 in their last two final quarters.

This season, in the home-and-away series, The Rock-Yerong Creek won both encounters. On a wet Saturday, May 17, at The Rock, the Magpies, inspired by a top performance from centreman, Lee Brown, restricted APM to just one goal in the second half and won the contest by 18 points, kicking 11.9 to 8.9. The margin was even bigger in the return bout at Ariah Park, when the in-form Magpies crushed the Brown Bombers by 34 points, with replacement ruckman, Andrew Rainbird, giving a sterling performance. Jason Brown was a more than useful focal point, kicking six goals for the winners, but without taking too much away from the win, APM were without key big men, Brett Page and John Raczkowski that day.

In last week's match, both played significant roles in their team's win over Marrar, with Page dominant at centre half forward, and Raczkowski kicking five goals at full forward. These two are likely to play a big part again in today's game and key defenders for TRYC will have to be at their best. There's no doubting one of them. Lewis Winter, at centre half back, will give a good account of himself. Despite giving away a big height advantage to Page, Winter is sure to be effective. He is a most consistent player and loves the big occasions. Always in the right place, Winter is the epitome of a defender who is his team's first line of attack. The duel between these two players, Page and Winter, should be one of the highlights of the match. The task is a big one though for the much less heralded TRYC full back, Matt

Collins. Raczkowski's bulk will be a big problem for the youngster, who's done the job well for the Magpies throughout the year, but lacks the finals' experience of his opponent.

The centre clash should be another feature of the game, with TRYC best and fairest, and runnerup in the Clear Medal, Lee Brown, pitted against one of APM's most consistent player of the last eight years, Terry Greenham. As his awards suggest, "Leroy" has had a top season, his first full one with the Magpies and his grand finals experience is enjoyed by few others. At age 26, Brown has played in no less than five Senior grand finals already, and was usually one of the better performers. Those were in the glory days of former club, MCU. Brown wins the hard ball with consummate ease, and disposes well with long driving kicks. Greenham is also a prolific kick winner and loves to drift forward to kick the opportunist goal.

At the Magpie forward end, key attacking players, David Gardiner and Jason Brown will be matched by young Grant Ryan and reliable full back, Andrew Schmetzer. Ryan has had a big season for APM, with League representation, earlier in the year, evidence of this. There's not much of him for a key position player, but he makes up for that with sheer determination. Ryan had a big game against Nathan Graetz, last week, and should hold his own against Gardiner, who, without being a standout player has filled the key forward role admirably. The goal front contest should be a beauty, with Jason Brown in form, and Schmetzer keen to nullify his effectiveness. Recall, Brown kicked six goals against APM at last start, and Schmetzer, who loves the big games will be determined to even the ledger.

Lion-hearted TRYC ruckman, Andrew Rainbird, was the trump in the Magpies last win over APM, but today could find himself against a variety of opponents, including the likes of Dallas McKelvie, Daniel Chalmers, and even, Brett Page and John Raczkowski. That's a tall order for the "Pigsy", but he'll just treat it as another day at the office. Around the ground respective ruck rovers, APM's Robbie Harper and the Magpies' Paul Noack will win more

than their share of kicks. Both are expected to be key contributors for their teams. Harper is probably one of the finest players in the area. He can do everything required of a footballer .. and usually does. Good in the air, smart at ground level, tough in the clashes and a beautiful kick, Harper is a joy to watch. Noack, too, wins the ball often and his disposal is one of his team's best. Rovers, Matt Gale (TRYC) and Brian Gaynor (APM) are industrious and effective, without being brilliant.

Around the flanks, each team has players likely to cause a few headaches for their opposition. TRYC's captain-coach, Greg Brain, forward pocket, Chris Masterson, former coach, Col Carroll are forwards who have to be closely checked. So too do APM forwards, Jason Bryce and Mal Hillier, whilst Ben Cassidy is also capable of kicking goals. Young wingmen, APM's duo of Gavin Leiper and Nat Herdon should have good duels with their opposites Brad Merrills and Marc Bauer. TRYC's runner-up to Brown in the best and fairest, Craig Taylor was impressive in the second semi and should again be conspicuous with his play from the back flank.

When all's said and done, it all points to a top grand final. The Magpies are possibly tougher ... that was the claim of APM officials at their last meeting ... "they outmuscled us· ... and if the ground's heavy that could favour the Magpies. But APM are a taller side (again a problem if it's wet!) and should outmark the Magpies. As far as combined talent goes, perhaps APM have a slight advantage there, too.

It's a case of two teams clashing at the peak of their form ... TRYC on a winning sequence of eight matches and APM in great finals' form. Well, here goes, I think Ariah Park-Mirrool can go on and win it, giving the "Brown Bombers" their first Senior 11

Premiership since 1962!!

In the Reserves, the same two teams which contested the second semi-final, Cootamundra (who won that match) and Marrar will meet again. The Bombers came back well after their second semi drubbing to beat the more-fancied Ariah Park-Mirrool in last week's preliminary final. However, with their Seniors now out of the premiership fight, the Marrar Twos may have some players who've played in each of the two finals, so far, ineligible to compete in today's big game. That wont be the case with Cootamundra, who should have as strong, if not stronger, lineup as they did in the second semi, which they won convincingly by 39 points. Marrar's defence, led by veterans Graham Willis and Bruce Rollins will have to be at its best to prevent Coota's powerful forward line, featuring Dean Cooper and Jamie Pursehouse, from kicking a winning score. The Blues also have top players in David Harris, "Foot'' Johnson, Rod Craig and Scott Roberts. Marrar will look to Simon Crouch and Paul Flanagan around the ground and will need a big one from Chris Smith and the Hindmarsh boys. Cootamundra stand as my favourites ... but that's often when Marrar are at their best : when least favoured to win. Remember 1995!?!?

GRAND FINAL OUTCOME

· What the other coaches say:

Stephen Eather (Ardlethan): "I thinkTRYC. They're harder at the ball, and a good, solid, balanced side. They're all 'goers' APM rely on a few better players. Yeah ... I think the overall strength of TRYC will win it!."

Matt Conway (Cootamundra): "APM. the couple of tough games they've had in the last two weeks should harden them for the grand final. Robbie Harper is a player The Rock will have to watch! ."

Tim Goonan (Rivcoll): 11 A draw!! I've had a good hard think about it and I can't separate them. both sides have their share of good players, APM's Harper and Page and TRYC's Brown and Winter, to name just a couple, and it could well be decided simply by the bounce

· of the ball. Yep ... I'll stick with a draw! /'

Geoff Smith (Marrar): 11 APM ... they've too many class players. Their strong finish has been a feature of their last few matches, and even if they're a few goals down early they've probably got enough strength to win through. Page is a key player ... even if Winter lines up on him, Page will be the winner; and I doubt if they (TRYC) have a match for Robbie Harper. APM are very confident and should win a close one!!"

David Pocock (Sth Wagga-Tolland): 11APM. They have a good mix of talls and shorts ... all are mobile and quick. Page is a key player; if he has a day out the premiership's on the way. I think TRYC will find it tough in the rucking contests; Rainbird will be outreached. The Magpies will acquit themselves well though with players such as Noack and the Browns (Lee and Jason) Certainly, during the home-andaway series, APM were much better performed against us than were TRYC."

Mark Price (Uranquinty-Kapooka): " I'm going for TRYC. They've been the form team at the right end of the season, and they're probably the toughest side we played during the year. With players such as Paul Noack, Lew Winter, Lee Brown, Jason Brown and Chris Masterson, I think TRYC can do it. Still .... the tall timber of APM will be a worry! "

Riverina Umpires Association Supported by the "Home Tavern", "Rules Club" and "Wagga Mutual Credit Union"

Well it has finally got down to the business end of the season, the Farrer League Grand Final and the beginning of the RFL semi-final series. Congratulations to the four clubs who are represented in the Grand Finals today, TRYC and APM in 1st grade, and Marrar and Cootamundra in Reserves. The fact that four clubs out of eight are represented should lead to a good gate taking which I'm sure will please the MVAFA. Good luck to all participants in today's Grand Finals, play the ball, and may the best teams win.

Seeing as this is the last time many of the Farrer League and club officials will see the notes this year I would like to take the opportunity to thank those officials and club captains who made the effort to make the members of the RUA feel welcome at their clubs and look forward to this continued support in 1998.

From now on in the competition for appointments will really hot up with only two semi finals and the RFL Grand Final left to complete for the RUA. For those of us who will be finished for the year now, congratulations on your efforts during 1997 and I look forward to seeing you all at the presentation night at the Rules Club on the 20th September. Just a reminder that any funny anecdotes from the season should be related to Norm or Frate ASAP.

For those who may not have heard by now Jimmy Creek broke his ankle playing Superules in Canberra a couple of weeks ago abruptly ending his season. This was pretty unfortunate as he was running into a bit of form, had done the 1st grade semi final the day before, and was in contention

for a Grand Final spottoday. Bad luck mate, I hope to see you on the track again next year.

Congratulations to the following members who have been appointed to today's big games.

Don't Forget that tonight to go back to The Rules Club after the games to have drinks as well as a dinner night at the Bistro for all umpires and their partners starting at 7pm.

Board of Directors, Riverina Football League Mr. Gardiner.

Dear Sir, As I anticipate that this season 1997 will be

my last one that I umpire in the Riverina Football League. For twenty two years I have made the journey north to officiate in the Riverina Football League matches and for those twenty two years I have thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the hospitality friendliness and co-operation of your football clubs.

I would particularly like to thank the officials of all your clubs for those twenty two years. Whether they be gaol or boundary umpires, time keepers or administrators, such as President, Secretary, Treasurer or Team Mangers.

They have all contributed to making my trips to the Riverina League most enjoyable. Best wishes for your football clubs for the remainder of the season 1997 and for future years. Thanking you once again for the respect, acceptance and friendship you have demonstrated to me over the duration of my umpiring career.

Yours sincerely, Noel Pattison.

GRAND FINAL FLASHBACKS

Sunday, September 16, 1962 will be well remembered by the "old" Ariah Park-Mirrool followers, because it was on that day, at Narrandera Sportsground, the "Brown Bombers" won their last Premiership. After a heart-stopping last quarter which lasted for 34 minutes, APM withstood a gallant charge from Coolamon, who kicked 7-2 in that last term to the "Brown Bombers" 3-3, giving Ariah ParkMirrool the premiership by two points. Johnny Hawke was the jubilant captain-coach of the Premiers, and chief goalkicker was Barry Walker (now Wagga Tigers chairman of selectors) with three. The "Brown Bombers" had lead at every change and had, in fact, increased the margin at each break, before nearly succumbing to the great final term of the "Greens". An estimated crowd of 12,500 paid 1818 pounds at the gate of the 1962 SouthWest League Grand Final, which saw a final scoreline: APM 10.20.80 def. Coolamon 11.12.78

TRYC's last premiership was in 1986. A proud club president, Bob Driscoll, was jubilant. The Magpies had just won their one and only premiership! On a rainy Saturday, September 13, The Rock-Yerong Creek's captain-coach, Damian Walsh, coolly kicked a goal six minutes from final siren time to give his side a two point win over MCU. The final scoreline read:TRYC 10. 8. 68 defeating MCU 9.12. 66. The match started in fiery fashion witnessed by a crowd which paid $6318 at Maher Oval. No less than six players were reported following an ugly brawl, involving almost all players. There are no "remnants" of that premiership side playing in today's encounter.

llrlan Lawrence Sports

It was just two years ago (1995) that TRYC played in their last Grand Final. On that occasion, Saturday, September 16, Marrar completed an undefeated season by beating the Magpies in the Mercantile Mutual Farrer League Grand Final, played at Robertson Oval before a crowd which paid $5672. Although down at quarter time, Marrar took control over the next three quarters, and with better goal front accuracy, kicked 12.8.80 to TRYC's 7.15.57. Lewis Winter and Shane Brown were current players named amongst the Magpies best in that loss. As few as seven of the 1995 runners-up team could be in today's TRYC lineup.

Ariah Park-Mirool's last Grand Final was last year. In the "battle of the Bombers", the "Brown Bombers" (APM) went down to the Marrar side by just eight points in a thriller at Wagga's Maher Oval. APM had lead by 13 points at the final change but allowed Marrar to outscore them 5.4 to 2.1 in the last quarter. Current player, Mal Hillier was their leading grand final goalkicker, with four, but only one (Jason Bryce) of those named in the best six is with the club this year!! The crowd paid $8912 to see the match.

The Rock-Yerong Creek players to watch

Lee Brown Although only in his mid-twenties, Brown, who joined the Magpies midway through last season is an experienced

finals campaigner. He played in the 1988-89-90 and 1993-94 MCU Grand Final teams and was rarely a poor performer. In his first full season with TRYC, "Leroy" has had a fine year, winning his Club's best and fairest award and coming second to

Phil Guthrie in the Clear Medal for the League's best and fairest. Brown wont take any detours in his pursuit to get the ball and woe betide any one who gets in the way!! A prolific kick-winner, this rugged No.18 is sure to come under notice.

Lewis Winter One of the League's best and safest defenders. As his club notes suggest he plays the game in a fashion similar to the Swans' Paul Roos. In his third year with the

. Magpies, Winter is a former Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong player, and as such had plenty of finals experience. In his five finals matches with TRYC, to date, (three in '95, one last year and the second semi two weeks ago) Winter has been in the best three players on the ground, showing

that he can carry competition games' form into the big occasion matches. Winter has that uncanny knack of being where the ball is, and his expected duel with APM coach, Brett Page should be one of the match's highlights today. Marvel at the play of the No.2!!

Chris Masterson Another seasoned campaigner recruited to the Magpies' nest this year. Masterson first made a name for himself, locally, playing for Turvey Park in the mid to late eighties as a teenager. Indeed, he was the powerful RFL team's leading goalkicker in 1986-7 and was just pipped in 1988. Since then he has played in Sydney and in the O & M League. Masterson has again, this year, shown his prowess as a goalkicker and leads TRYC's list with a tally of 63. Not too prominent in the second semi, kicking only one goal, the cagey No.6 is set to sneak a few today.

Paul Noack In his third year with TRYC, Noack made a belated start to this season, due to an injury sustained in a summer pastime. But it wasn't long before he made his presence felt, both by his team mates and his opponents. This no nonsense, tough-asthey-come player wont sidestep any issue and can be relied upon to win more than his share of possessions from the middle, and around the ground in his ruckroving role. Not only does he win plenty of ball, he more often than not disposes of it in fine fashion. There's little doubt the ubiquitous No.24 will be one to watch today.

Robbie Harper Generally considered one of the best footballers in the region, if not the State, Harper has had yet another great

season. His Club best and fairest this year was his sixth with APM, having also won the award in 1990-1-2-3-4. In those years he was usually his club's highest vote-winner in the League best and fairest award, as indeed he was this

season. In 1995-6 he returned to play with Temora, the club with which he played in 1988, when he won the Schmidt Medal for the best and fairest in the Farrer League Reserves competition. Back atAPM this year as assistant coach, Harper has represented the Farrer league, the Riverina League and the State. However, he is yet to play in a Senior premiership team! Could that happen today?? Watch the brilliant No.16 .... he can do almost everything on the footy field!!

at some time he'll bob up near the goals, as he loves kicking them. Keep your eye on the blonde No. 11.

Gavin Leiper One of the club's outstanding youngsters, Leiper has taken all before him in his first full season of senior grade football. No stranger to the finals scene, Leiper played with the Reserves in their finals campaign of 1995 and their premiership side of last year. Whilst being close to the smallest player on the field he is also one of the most skilful and has been amongst the "Brown Bombers" best in the two games of this finals series. Watch out for this blonde wingman, No. 45, who's sure to please.

Grant Ryan Another of the club's talented youngsters, Ryan has "graduated"

Terry Greenham One of just a small from being a useful utility to a permanent key handful of APM players who has played in their position defender. At centre half back, Grant three grand finals of this decade. He came to has taken on the best and usually done well.

Magpie Club Notes On this very important day for the Club I think

it is imperative that we thank all our major sponsors for not only their financial support but also their moral support over the year. To The Home Hotel, The Kings Own Hotel Motel, The Rock Memorial Bowling Club, Peter L.Brown &Associates, Quinty Real Estate and Rodneys Transport Services we sincerely thank you and hope that we can resume our arrangements again next year. We also thank our support sponsors namely The Rock Butchery, Riverina Spraying Service, Riverina Battery & Tyre Market, Croker and Lewington, Brian Lawrence Sports. It would be remiss of me not to mention and thank all those who joined the Super Magpies Club. The response was overwhelming with some 37 members wishing to join this elite section of the Club. Your support is greatly appreciated but I might add to those who are contemplating joining next year there are definite advantages.

The Ladies Auxiliary must not go without mention as they have again worked tirelessly all year. As well as supporting the Reserve Graders financially every week they also give significantly to the Club at the seasons end. To Anne, Jean, Phil and their workers we thank you very much.

The Presentation Ball will be held on Friday 19th September at The Kings Own Hotel. A supper will be served and fellas, it is a coat and tie affair this year. Music will be by The Dodgey Bros. Members of the Super Magpies Club will be guests of the Club on this night. We are hoping that it will be a beauty. Admission is $10 a head or $20 a double.

At the time of printing the mini Lotto is still jackpotting. The draw is now worth over $1,400 so it is well worth winning. It is envisaged that we will run it until the jackpot is won and then go into recess during the off season. Many thanks to those who have supported it week in week out.

Another reminder to return your meat raffle tickets if you haven't already. It will be drawn at the Junior Presentation on Friday 12th at The Kings Own. after the game today the agenda will be as follows: The Home Hotel until 7 p.m. We would like everyone to be at The Kings Own by 7.30 p.m. A BBQ will be available and a Disco will be blasting out the music. Everyone is welcome. Sunday will be at the Clubrooms, 11 a.m. start, where everyone is-welcome also. A charge of $1 O

· a head all inclusive with players being · complementary. Monday will be at The Home Hotel.

The Executive and Committee would like to convey their thanks to all those who pulled on the Black & white jumper this year. Some wore it with greater passion than others and hopefully those people will be rewarded this afternoon. To Greg, Lewis and Smokey thank you for a job well done.

Today brings the curtain down on another season in the Farrer Football League. So far it has been a pretty successful year but one more victory would give the players, the committee and the supporters the one win that means so much. Everyone connected in any way with the Club is right behind each and everyone of the Seniors and we all know that we can bring home that much wanted flag.

Thought for the year: "We're the Mighty Magpies, Magpies we are".

Bomber Club Notes Well today is what we have been striving for

, all year. Last week the First Grade scored a good. win against Marrar to get us where we are today. The first half was an even tussle, but the last half showed the Brown Bombers finishing much stronger.

The Reserves also had an even first half and at half time held a small lead, but were outscored in the last two quarters and were beaten by a better team on the day. ·

A good effort from Coach Ian and all the team for going as far as they did and with a lot of good young players it looks good for the future of th.e . Club. .

Congratulations to Rob Harper who polled so well to be our Best & Fairest Player for 1997 and to our runner-up Terry Greenham.

The Reserves had joint winners in Brian Gaynor and Jamie Beattie and runner up was Terry Walker. Congratulations to all. Best wishes

· today to the Junior netball team in their Grand Final. Our Presentation Dinner will be held on Friday September 19th at 7 p.m. Dress is coat & tie and for catering purposes tickets @$20 must be collected and paid for by 9th September. See Shirley as soon as possible.

A big thankyou to those who have supported the Club in any way during the year. To all our sponsors, your help has been terrific, to the weekly award donors and to the donors of our raffles, we appreciate your continued support. Many thanks to our selectors, boundary umpires, goal umpires, strappers, runners, ticket sellers, gate roster and Ladies Auxiliary. Your help is what makes our Club.

Another important thank you is to all the · players in both grades who have made themselves available for training and games s·ince February. It is a big commitment and is· appreciated.

Today is the big day and we know' every Bomber will come out firing and give 100% - we know you can do it.

BOMBERS TO WIN

Murrumbidgee Valley Australian Football Assoc.

President's Message That time of the year is upon us once again

and whilst the club has not been quite as successful as last year, the great Ariah Park Mirrool . Football Club has managed to get the first grade to the grand final. Well done Brett in your first year as senior coach and to Rob for you able support as assistant coach. A great effort by both teams. · Commiserations to Ian and his boys (some a little older than boys) for making the finals once again, although we didn't get as far as we thought _and would have liked. Still a very good effort. · . The netballers had all grades make the finals

· with the juniors the only ones to make the grand final. It is still a great effort to be so competitive in all grades. Congratulations to Rachael Breust

· for winning the C grade B & F medal for the .league. "

Success in football and netball does not just happen. It takes a lot of hard work from some very dedicated people. I would like to thank the Ladies Auxiliary, committee, strappers, selectors, . runners, gate keepers, boundary umpires, scoreboard attendants, Bob and Nev for cooking the BBQ every week and anybody else who I may have forgotten. A big THANKYOU for your efforts once again.

Last but by no means least a very big thankyou to all our sponsors whose names are on display outside our dressing shed today. The club would not survive without your fine contributions.

As all our sponsors know how long it is since we have won a flag let's not disappoint them today.

THE ROCK-VERONG CREEK

T.R.-Y.C. COACHES MESSAGE Well here we are, left with just 2 hours of

Premiership football to decide who the champions are for the '97 season. I would personally like to thank each and every person involved with TRYC Football Club on and off the field on the great season thus far and I most certainly believe the efforts of everybody will be highly rewarded this afternoon.

Today we conclude a somewhat indelible year and all 21 players that take part in this match will take with them precious memories if we continue to play with passion and desire for 4 quarters. Always remember that premierships are won by persistence and determination, usually a trait of the best TEAM. One can only hope the weather is fine, the footy is entertaining and the result is in favour of us.

&PREVIEW

. Griffith is on the verge of making an early exit from Mercantile Mutual Riverina Football Le~gue's finals series after a disappointing finish to the home and away series. .

The Swans lost their last four matches running into the finals and will now take the underdog tag going into Saturday's elimination final against Temora.

And just for the record, there's no second chances after Saturday. There can be no more excuses for Griffith should they go under to the Kangaroos.

Griffith has been. the team all year which has come under the most scrutiny from all angles , and rightly so, as the Swans would have to agree.

. Th~y started the season in a blaze of glory with victory week after week by 100 points or more. Then the rot set in when the team came up against some of the more qompetitive teams on the ladder.

Their season made a complete turnaround and suddenly Griffith was under great pressure to .beat a team in the top five, criticised for their inability to beat tougher opposition.

The Swans battled through the second half of the season and it soon became clear the team would struggle to hold a place in the top three.

As it happens Griffith finished fifth afer defending premier Ganmain-Grong GrongMatong hit their straps and surged past both Griffith and Temora to snatch third place and the double chance. ·

Adding to Griffith's woes in the finals leadup was their last round loss to neighbours Leeton-Whitton. A great celebration for the Crows but hardly what Griffith needed at a critical time of the season.

If ever there was a game Griffith desperately needed to win in a bid to stamp themselves as a serious contender, it was against Leeton.

Therefore with a loss the Swans will take no winning momentum into the finals and this may prove very costly.

Working in Griffith's favour , however, is a couple of things.

We all know finals football is a whole new ball game. The "fever" in the air can lift a team to great heights and that's where the Swans' supporters have a great role to play.

Importantly, the Swans gave Temora plenty to think about in a round 15 encounter the Swans thumping the Roos by more tha~ 13 goals.

Griffith needs a repeat performance. Temora too has been up and- down in the

weeks leading into the finals. A big loss to Tigers and last week's loss to GGGM spring to mind as significant defeats in their premiership quest.

The Roos finished two wins clear of Griffith but with a lower percentage suggesting the Swans overall kicked more goals (99 points) and let less through (402 points) compared to Temora.

Statistics aside, only one thing matters for these teams on Saturday and that's victory. Anything less will culminate in an abrupt end to the season In reserves elimination final, East Wagga-Kooringal plays Temora and in the under 18s Leeton-Whitton tackles CollingullieAshmont.

Getting a second chance after Sunday's qualifying final, however, will be GGGM or Wagga Tigers.

Last year's grand finalists go around again with plenty to play for as minor premier Turvey Park takes a week off.

Both the Tigers and Lions have shown good form but it seems Wagga will be a tough nut to crack in their bid to regain RFL's top prize.

At the same time, and with a lesson in last year's decider under their belts, Tigers won't underestimate the Lions - the danger team to both Turvey Park and Wagga.

They love finals football out Ganmain way and the Lions come into their own when September hits.

This game will be a beauty and supporters are sure to pack into Kindra Park for a great day's football .. Tigers have a big day with their reserves playing old rivals Turvey Park and the under 18s up against Narrandera.

Let the finals begin!

Well folks, it's September again. The time of year when a young man's fancy turns to .... the finals.

Last week the Under 18's underlined their improvement when they won their second game of the season. The Players'

Player went to Michael Oliver, the consistent Matty Lowes won the coaches award while young Smoother took out the Matthew's Menswear socks.

The Seconds went down again but played pretty well with a severely undermanned side. its a pity that a few blokes have "done a heartilage" at this stage of the year but the ones that are still here are having a real dip. Player's Player was shared by the Under 18's who backed up - Soldier, Kevin Drum, Matty Lowes, lim Curry, Steve Drum etc. Glen "Tiger" Hartwig · has put extension on his house to keep all the socks he has won and he took out another pair last Sunday. Pip Block won the Westy award, but probably gave it away to someone who likes beer.

It was disappointing in the Ones that two bad 1 O minute periods cost us the top three spot we held for 90% of the year. Still, we're there now and I know our four quarter best is good enough to beat anybody. Rossy D. was again outstanding to be a clear winner of the Players Player. Flappers did well again, Bruce Thommo, Donkey Francis, Victor Dunn and Mick Morton all did their bit. A new season starts now.

The minor rounds of the netball concluded with the A grade and juniors tuning up for the finals with victories while B and C grade finished their seasons on a losing note. Kristy Miller won the medal in the juniors 30-26 victory, C grade -lost 29-24 and B grade went down 26-20, Tracey Neilsen and Paula O'Dwyer winning the respective awards. The A grade finals veterans had a 52-42 win, with Michelle Jama and Kez Morton the stand outs. Good luck to all the girls in the finals.

As far as I know the vote count will be held tonight after the games. Unless you've heard any different, then show up at the clubhouse. While I would like to wish everyone the best of luck, I know that if we perform then luck won't be needed. Let's prove all the knockers wrong.

UP THE ROOS!!!

The Seniors were sluggish all day against a very determined and fired up opposition. Unfortunately the result went against us, but fortunately it had no impact on our position in the final five. Today we must improve our intensity if we want to remain in the White, Red v finals series beyond this week. The non-contracted players awards were $130 to Brett "Swampy'' Davis, $70 to Wayne "Illusions" Bodycott, $50 to Greg "Beeper" Collins, $30 to Damien "Tyson" Scott and $20 to Matthew "Kernaghan" Bunn.

The Reserves started well and went on to record a big win. The Bertoldos Bakery best player awards were $30 to Brent "Hooker" Harrison, $20 to David "Maintenance" Gee and $10 to Mark "Elastic" Cameron. The Players Player Award went to Trent "Cool" Demarco and the Mugs Mug went to Glen "Rednut" Collis.

The Under 18's battled hard but could not break the back of a determined opposition. Unfortunately the loss put them out of the top five for one of the few times this season. Bad luck guys. Congratulations on your effort this year, it was a vast improvement on 1996. The best players were Michael Duncan, Michael Tull, Michael Elliott, Shane Russell and Rodney Simpkin. Many thanks must go to George Duncan, Bill Kite and Graham Olney for their tremendous support of the Under 18's throughout the season.

Congratulations to the respective winners of the best and fairest awards. Trevor Clarke in the Seniors, Brent Harrison in the Reserves and Mick Elliott in the Under 18's. Also a belated happy birthday to our Treasurer Fiona Beverley. No ages revealed, but for anyone who is interested just think of Greg Dreyer.

Tonight after the game everyone we welcome all players and supporters back to the Exies Sports Club for a few cold ones and a bite to eat. Please do not forget the Presentation Night on Friday 24th October at the Ex-Servicemens Club. All players and supporters are requested to attend. More information about the evening will be available soon.

This week we are spending sixty seconds with Gary Argus - Nicknames: Gus, The Hippy, Peter (not Michael) Bolton, Man. Favourite Pastimes: Training, visiting the barber, collecting trophies, early morning telephone calls. Most Memorable Moments: kicking 7 goals for Sturt on Greg Phillips in a televised preseason comp game in Adelaide, premiership with Kilburn, bowling bouncers at 11 year olds in cricket, opening the bowling with Dom Norman. Favourite Food: All those meals cooked by Joker. Biggest Influence: Darren Oates, JP, Roland Roccacelli, Kinko the Clown. Favourite Music: AC DC, Pavarotti, The Hansons, Branski Beat, The Chipmunks. Most Admired Males: Paul Bagshaw, Rick Davies, Stephen "Bomber" Clifford.

fired up for a big year in 1998. The Mug this week went to our shooting star, Stacey Dedini. Juniors were unfortunate to go down to a strong team ... some jitters, over anxious. A well contested game by all girls. The socks went to Alana Steele and the hat to Michelle Parham. We wish the girls all the best for the .game on Saturday .... we will be there to support you.

Today we take on the ligers in the football in a bid to advance further in the finals.

A good start gave us the break we needed against Temora to win and hold on to third spot. Anthony Carroll, with a strong game at fullback won the Sports Club Award, Steven Carroll won the Brittons Towel and the Wagga First Aid Mug went to Scott Crozier as well as the Bridge Tavern dinner. Miltons Gear votes were (3) Scott Crozier, (2) Jed Lawton, (1) Steven Carroll.

The Reserves finished the season on a winning note with David Cox winning the Bowling Club award, Jari Nielsen the Ganmain Store Towel and Paul Harris the Webbes Dinner.

The 18's finished the season on a disappointing note. The consistent players won the awards, Brandon Ryan the Club Towel, Drew Symons the Four Hotels award and the Socks to Chris Kelly. Although not having a successful season, many thanks to the Under 18's who kept turning up week after week and also the Under 1 S's who helped out during the year.

Anyone requiring tickets to the RFL Medal Count, see Jack this week otherwise you will miss out. Our Presentation Night is on Friday 17th October at the Ganmain Sports Club. Silver Circle Draw is (275) Stan Alkemade, (300) Will Kember and B.Logan, (136) Julie Crozier.

Netball News - A Grade: What a great way to finish off the season with a close game with one of the top teams, Temora. The game was goal for goal with every player contributing 100% - Rachael's great rebounding and shooting saw her take out the Mug for the last game. B Grade: It felt like the grand final today as the girls were pumped and ready to turn our loss from the last game into a win and they did!!. ... the score was 26-20. Everyone finally clicked today, I suppose it's better late than never as we have next season to look forward to. The Mug this week went to a top defender Rebecca Ferguson. C Grade: C Grade finally proved what they really can do. The girls had a fantastic win over Temora and are now all

NARRANDERA CLUB NOTES The Eagles have four of their seven RFL teams in

the finals with the Under 18's footballers finishing in third place while the A,B and C Grade netballers also play in the finals. The First grade footballers finished second last and look forward to a far better season in 1998, while the Reserves won their last three games of the season to finish ninth. All the Under 1 S's netballers are eligible to play in their competition for the next two years so they should be more competitive next year. . . ,

The Seniors couldn't match Coolamon last week but Matt Harrison kicked the goal of the year with a 70 metre kick after the final siren. Last weeks award winners were Justin Male (tracksuit), Tim Pearson (boxer shorts), Damien Prentice (socks) and Chris Terlich (dinner at the Bidgee).

The Reserve Grade continued their late season winning streak to climb further up the ladder. Award winners against Coolamon were Mark Clark ($20), Troy Parry ($15), Mark Whitby ($10) and Victor Hugo (Beaurepaires). The Under 18's had a confidence boosting win with the award winners being Aaron Whillans, Courtney Sullivan, Tim Zak, Dean Hopwood, Dave Sheather and Tony Powell.

Three netball teams had two wins and two losses against Coolamon, The best players were Charlie Male, Yvette O'Donohue and Amy Hugo in A Grade, Caren Hugo, Melanie English and Shannon Hutchins in B Grade and Brook~ Christie, Cathy Sullivan and Alicia Irons in C Grade while Cathy Sullivan; Prue McCallum and Bree Burden were the best in the Under 1 S's.

Congratulations to the Eagles Best & Fairest winners in both football and netball. The winners in the football were Justin Male from Chris Smith in Seniors, Richard Dolan from Damien Hyde in Reserves and Adam Norden from Chris Terlich in the Under 1 B's. The winners in the netball were Kim Hugo from Andrea Hemphill in A Grade, Melanie English from Toni Osmond in B Grade, Cheree Bloomfield from Nicole Irons in B Grade and Lauren Powell from Cathy Sullivan in the Under 15's.

This week the Under 1 B's play the Wagga Tigers in the Qualifying Semi Final in what should be a great game as both teams have many talented footballers. The game will be won by teamwork rather than by individual players. All players and supporters are reminded that the Blue and Gold presentation night is on 10th October so book early.
