Spread and sustainability

Principles

Spread of Knowledge

• Lots of activity over many years and some good success – however….!

• Case studies – now have over 150 on QI Hub website• Knowledge into Action – preoccupied by spread- from

‘improvement islands’ or ‘pockets of excellence’ to scale• What spread strategies are required for the idea to be adopted

easily locally • What levers of organisational change do we have or can we

influence both nationally and locally?• How do we exploit networks effectively ?

Sustainability Challenge

‘The challenge is not starting but continuing after the initial enthusiasm has gone’. Ovretveit 2003• Focus on quality improvement infrastructure and

system conditions • Identify and map system and focus on high impact

changes• Implementation science – do we know enough? • Do we really understand and acknowledge challenges

at the front line ?
