SEVEN MONASTERIES, SIX DAS AND 938 KM

Seven Monasteries, Six Days and 938 km was a project presented in a group exhibition held in the Hospital do Desterro in Lisbon, on the context of my graduation show by the Faculty of Fine-Arts Lisbon

Built in 1591, Hospital do Desterro is a former convent that belonged to the Cistercian Order. As order, they have arrived to Portugal in 1144, by the congregation of St.Bernard coming from France, twelve monks and an abbot have reached Tarouca. In the north of Portugal they founded the first monastery, São João de Tarouca.

On April 15th I started my journey with destination to the source of Cister-cians in Portugal.Crossing seven monasteries and trying to create a genealogical line be-tween the different places, this journey led me to Tarouca in the district of Viseu.During this time I had installed a dehumidifier, that was working and collect-ing moisture from the site. Through the process of condensation the air led to water.

In 2014 the School Paulino Montez (code mane 113) was target of a project of architectural rehabilitation, as a spectator I watched the firsts few months of transformation. Furniture or any other materials were removed, leaving only the structural elements of the building, the walls. Huddle around the school this rubble was waiting the transportation to a possible rubbish dump, however the work stopped and with it the whole process of transformation.

Cento e Treze I was a site-specific installation, held in my old classroom (1999-2003). Using the school rubble I built my reli-quary. Through the mixture of cement with debris build five sculp-ture pieces. Serving as containers, these blocks had approximate size of a table for two students

If the debris originated the installation Centro e Treze I, now de-stroyed it returned to its initial state, the rubble.

Collected and stored the remains were installed in a room, inside the Faculty of Fine-Arts in Lisbon, now using the same wood the debris were deposited in two wooden containers. Contextualized by a video of the construction and destruction of the first installation, accompa-nied by an audio piece recorded during a class in the same primary school.

CORVETTE & BOVRIL present Big Show Bempostinha was an ex-hibition project developed with João Viotti and presented at our studio in June 2015

Thinking of painting as a field/object that can be explored, in order to work not only with its physical space (canvas) but also with their inte-gration and relationship with the exhibition space. I developed this set of five paintings, where after stretching the raw cloth and applying dif-ferent layers of glue, in order to prepare the canvas to receive paint. I removed it from the structure and fixed it again, moving 15,cm to the left and upwards in relation to it initial position. Trying to expand its pictorial space of each painting, a space that now is no longer limited by the frontal plane. Also, using the exhibition space as a ground zero, that through the individual context of each work, which in accordance with other may or may not develop and recreate the concept of space. This exhibition is composed by five paintings installation, a set of sculptural pieces (J. Viotti), a video made for the exhibition in collab-oration with J. Viiotti. It would also be precursor of a project that has developed in this space until the end of 2015.

BEMPOSTINHA 25 B(08/10/2015 - 28-12-2015)

In the last quarter of 2015, in association with João Viotti, we funded Bempostinha 25B, making our old studio in an exhibition space, tover three months we presented ten exhibitions. In the vast majority I participated with individual work or in collab-oration we created site-specific installations. On the remaining exhibition that we presented at the space I tried to work as curator, proposing friends to make an ex-hibition there and helping in the creation of the show.

Bempostinha 25B assumed from the beginning as an exhibition project, trying to solve problems that are bound beyond the creation of the artistic pieces. In Lisbon on a post-graduated context we tried to create an ambush, by the creation of the Event and using tools such as social networks, Bempostinha became something viral. Was also because of this “media attention” that we had most of the Faculty of Fine-Arts’ students present assiduous on the exhibitions. Serving as a protective cover, a camouflage, that during the process of thinking, discussion and installation of the different shows, made possible for us this freedom of experimentation.
