Introduction:Seaweed is a loose colloquial term

encompassing macroscopic, multicellular, benthic marine algae. This term includes members of the algae. It may be red, green, or brown. The seaweeds may be classified by its use, like for food, fertilizer and medicine.

Caulerpa Lentillifera, commonly known as “arosep” (Cagayan) or “latu” (Cebu). It is a thallus consisting of long stolon giving off few rhizoidal branches below and may erect. Grape-like branches above up to 8.5 centimeter tall. This species is a common component of shallow and protected reef flats and lagoons.

It is distributed in some parts of Pangasinan. Bolinao, Pangasinan.

Abstract:

Seaweeds are amusingly valuable. It provides food for human, fish and aquatic animals.

Seaweeds such as codium edule, commonly known as “pukpuklo”. It is a thallus spongy green to greenish brown, composed of cylindrical branches two – five millimeter broad, attached to each other by small cushion- like rhizoidal structures. Its habitat is on sand covered rocks in lowering intertidal.

Methodology:Materials to be used in “Seaweed Jam”

¼ kilogram of seaweeds

¾ cup of brown sugar

Page 4: Seaweed Jam (Investigatory Project

2 teaspoon of calamansi.

1 cup of clean water

Procedure:

Wash the seaweeds very well. Cook with the ¾ cup of sugar. Place in a pan. Stir constantly. After three minutes. Add two teaspoon of calamansi juice. Continue stirring until the mixture becomes thick. Remove from heat and pour while still hot in sterilized jar. Seal tightly.

Conclusions:In determining the prescence of

alkaloide, saponins, flavonoids, tannins, cardenolides, anthraquinones component, you must perform the following tests:

Alkaloids – Wagner & Mayer test

Saponins - Froth test, Leibermann-Burchard Test

Page 5: Seaweed Jam (Investigatory Project

Cardenolides – Keller – Killiani test

Flavonoids – Bate, Smith and Whitmore test

Tannins – Gelatin and Ferric chloride test

Anthraquinones – Bontrager and Modified Bontrager Test

These tests were used to detect the different components of the seaweed. According to our observation, seaweeds contain cardenolides through the use of Keller- Killiani Test.

Results:The produced jam will serve as a food

with nutritional value (FYI: Seaweeds are recommended by nutritionists for preventing weight gain.) Calamansi is rich in phosphorous, calcium, iron and Vitamin C while the seaweeds includes organic, (photosynthetic) vitamins, trace minerals, amino acids, anti-oxidants, omega 3 and omega 6 according to (http://www.fuelthemind.com/health/nutrition/nutrition_articles/benefits_of_seaweed_nutrition_article.html)
