HOME RESOURCE GUIDE 2010 SEATTLEHOMESMAG.COM

JUST AS IN SELECTING A PARTNER for any other major undertaking in life, it is important

to find an architect who is a good match with your goals, your concept of the project, your

personality and your budget. Choosing the right person from the start allows you to enjoy the

process as much as the finished product. The following steps in the selection process can make

all the difference in creating a successful partnership.

STEP 1Make a list of potential firms and solicit information from them. Colleagues and acquaintances

who have worked with architects are excellent resources, as is your local chapter of the American Institute of Architects (aiaseattle.org).

Contact those architects or firms and ask for information, qualifications and references. If you

are ready to ask the architect for a preliminary proposal, send a written description of your project

to help them in the process. Find out how the architect charges for services and ask about

additional expenses that could occur as the project moves ahead.

STEP 2Evaluate your finalists. Consider your candidates’ track records in general, as well as their direct

experience with projects similar to your own. Determine who can best complete the project

within your time frame and budget.

If possible, visit a few projects designed by your finalists. There’s nothing like looking at the

actual work of a candidate to decide whether you are a match.

STEP 3Interview two or three final contenders for the job. See whether your personalities mesh, as

well as your concepts for the project. Clarify the proposed schedule, fee structure and areas of

responsibility.

STEP 4At this point, you will probably have a good idea who is your leading candidate. To double-check

your instincts, make a checklist. Look at relevant experience, technical competence, budget

considerations and time frame. Finally, review the interview in your mind. Did the architect really

listen to what you were saying? Did she ask the right questions? Did he offer reasonable

solutions? Above all, did you feel comfortable?

4D Architects1414 Market Street, Suite 200

Kirkland, WA 98033

4darchitects.com

YEAR ESTABLISHED: 1985OWNERS/PRINCIPALS: Barbara Pickens, AIA, and Ben Mulder, DesignerSPECIALTY: Sustainable Architectural Design

Celebrating 25 years as 4D Architects, Barbara Pickens, AIA and Ben Mulder focus on creating inspired architectural spaces

and structures that are responsive to the eco-systems and culture of the Pacific Northwest. We feel successful projects

come from exceptional clients, excellent team communications, and attention to form, function and detail.

4D Architects’ distinctive hallmark is our ability to involve and use the fourth dimension of “time and movement” in the

homes and buildings we design. People moving through space give meaning to buildings. Such interaction requires a

time component; it’s this interplay between motion, time, and vision that shapes our designs.

Our designs originate as a response to the client’s goals and site opportunities, always looking for artistic possibilities,

creating elegant solutions that result in a comfortable and beautiful architectural form. We design homes that transition

through the growth and changes that are the truths of family life. Our clients tend to stay in their homes for many years;

we like that.

Our services also include sustainable design, interiors, lighting design, feasibility studies, corporate office design and

land planning.

We look forward to bringing our fourth dimensional vision and expertise into a design that will enhance your quality of life.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN

The Pacific Northwest is known for its abundance of natural beauty. To help make the most of

your garden, consider hiring a local landscape professional who has the knowledge and skills

to take on a project of any size and caliber. One avenue for seeking a reputable pro is to consult

these local landscape design and architecture associations that set standards and provide

support for their members:

A GUIDE TO LANDSCAPE ASSOCIATIONS

Association of Northwest Landscape Designers (anld.com)

ANLD was created in 1985 specifically for landscape designers in Washington and

Oregon as a forum for its members to network and share ideas to help the flourishing

Northwest landscape design industry grow.

Association of Professional Landscape Designers, Washington Chapter (apldwa.org)

Now in its 10th year, the Washington chapter of APLD is dedicated to establishing the

highest standards and providing certification for local landscape designers.

Washington Association of Landscape Professionals (walp.org)

Founded in 1984 and now with eight chapters across the state, WALP is a nonprofit organi-

zation that encourages certification for its members and advocacy for the green industry.

Washington Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (wasla.org)

Founded in 1973, WASLA is an association for professional landscape architects with

more than 300 members across the state. Members work in various fields and on a wide

range of projects—academic campuses, residential dwellings, parks and recreation,

historic preservation and hospitality and resorts.

Washington State Nursery & Landscape Association (wsnla.org)

Serving Washington State since 1937, the nonprofit WSNLA is the only statewide

organization that represents all components of the industry, including growers, retailers,

landscape professionals, educators and garden writers. —Rachel Gallaher

SEATTLEHOMESMAG.COM HOME RESOURCE GUIDE 2010

You’ve spent so much time designing your home and picking the right furniture,

now it’s time to focus on the details. Fixtures, windows, tile, appliances and more are

all important elements of the home and are things that are sometimes overlooked.

Fixtures and tile are the finishing touches that tie together the look of a bathroom

or kitchen. These elements can add texture and color and help convey the design

aesthetic of the room. An aluminum backsplash and sleek metal handles work well

in an industrial-style kitchen, for example, but glossy ceramic tiles and vintage glass

knobs are more classic choices for a traditional bath.

Looks are important, but so is functionality. Windows and appliances should

blend in with your home décor and also work well in the space. Energy Star-certified

products can help cut down on heating, cooling and electricity costs. If you love to

entertain, you’ll want to choose a refrigerator with room for platters, and if you live

in a condo, a narrow dishwasher is a necessity.

Whether you’re almost finished with a remodel or still dreaming about it, remember

to invest as much time in the details as you do in the rest of your home.
