IPMS Seattle is looking for a new webmaster to take over the club’s web site. After many years of service, Norm Filer has decided to step down, and we’re looking for a member who can take over his responsibilities. If you have questions, I’m sure that Norm can give you the details. I’m also looking for some help regarding the newsletter. I love editing this newslet- ter, and I’m not planning on giving up my post any time soon. But while I’m happy about my skills as an editor, I’m not a graphic designer by trade. The design of the newsletter hasn’t changed much over the years. I don’t plan to do what Tina Brown did with Newsweek, but I’d like someone who has some graphic design experience to take a look at the layout and offer some suggestions to modernize the look a bit. If you’d be interested, please contact me either by phone or e-mail, both of which can be found on page 2. That’s about it. IPMS Seattle Spring Show2012 Wrap-Up

Another year, and another successfulshow. And like all good shows, this onewas a success on many levels. Elsewherein this issue of the newsletter, you’ll findthe complete list of ribbon and awardwinners, so I’ll concentrate on the show asa whole.

Let’s get this out of the way first: the showmade money again this year. We’re stillcrunching the final numbers and makingsure we’ve handled all our final expenses,but it’s apparent we’re in the black againthis year.

Contest entrants and Model entries wereup this year, while Spectators were down alittle. That was a bit of a surprise, giventhat it was Easter and Passover weekend.My only explanation is that that familiesget together over this weekend to cel-ebrate, and they want something to do onSaturday other than sit in the house –what better to do than take in a modelshow!

We had a huge influx of folks from clubs inthe area. The Oregon Historical ModelersSociety club sent thirty (30) folks up toSeattle for this year’s show, and I saw a lotof blue IPMS Vancouver, yellow NOPMS,and white IPMS Tacoma/Green Dragonsshirts throughout the day. We even drewin folks from IPMS Salem, IPMS Boise,someone from northern California, amember from IPMS Dayton (as in Ohio),and even a modeler from Tahiti.

That huge influx may have been due to thefact that we were the Regional contest thisyear. Our Regional Coordinator, DaveFletcher, was in attendance as well. We’regrateful for his presence, as well as hisfeedback during and after the show.

Of course, it’s equally likely that influx mayhave been due to the quality seminars we

had throughout the day. Bill Glinski’sAlclad seminar was well attended, as wasChris Banyai-Repl’s Airbrushing 101session. John Alcorn had a full house forhis Modeling Master Class, and there wasgood attendance at the other sessionsthroughout the day as well. We took videoof all the seminars, and are editing thefootage now – the plan is to make themavailable for folks who weren’t able toattend.

Thanks to Tracy White, we have a newview on the show this year. Tracy used hisnew GoPro Hero2 camera to capture twotime lapse videos – one of our setupFriday evening, and one of the first fewhours of the show on Saturday morning.This is a very interesting view on ourshow, and lots of fun to watch – they cramhours of activity into roughly ten minutesof video. You can see these amazingvideos on YouTube under Tracy’saccount, specwarnet. Links are availableon the IPMS Seattle website as well, underthe Spring Show 2012 link.

I’d like to thank my outstanding showcommittee for all their hard work this year.This show doesn’t happen with theirdedication and hard work – I’m lookingforward to working with them again nextyear.

The 1/25th ScaleOrange Pumpkin

It all started with a sketch and seeing“sno-cat” pictures on line by accident atan Antarctic outpost. Lately, I’ve gottenaway from modeling more or less out of thebox to finally doing more modificationsand scratch-building. Don’t get me wrong -I still like out-of-the-box, but it does limitwhat you can build if a model doesn’t existof something you are interested in.

I have been modeling in the category of“loads” - in particular those things carriedby trucks - whether through a fifth wheeltrailer or a flat bed on the truck frame. I likeboth military and civilian loads, basically in1/72nd, 1/35th, or 1/25th. One challenge isusing different scales, and also making theconversion not look too much like itsoriginal form. This can be a good problemto solve.

The main cab-over was the easiest tobuild. The frame from the AMT kit wasused. After stretching the frame, the rest

was plastic Evergreen styrene sheet, oradapted from used styrene sheet. I use alot of Evergreen plastic for most of myconversions. “For Sale” signs are alsogreat for sheets of styrene plastic. A newflat-bed with ramps was added.

My local department store had lots of four-wheel Monster type toy trucks to choose

from, where I would get my tundra tires. Ibought three of the same trucks and endedup using all 12 tires. Two of the spare tiresare mounted on a removable tire rack onthe roof of the cab. I built a simple cranethat would be used to load or offload thetires should the crew need to change one.The engine is complete and the cab alsopivots to expose the engine once the roofrack and crane are moved out of the way.

The M-55 chassis for the sno-cat was funbut a little challenging. The rear tracksection had the perfect down angle tomake the sno-cat seem more of the type ofsnow vehicle people are used to seeing. Itbeing 1/32nd scale - and I wanting to add a1/25th truck cab to it - made my razor sawcome out more than once. I cut the trucksleeper down below the cab roof andadded two areas for storage with ‘treadplate’ plastic. The back of the M-55 wasbuilt up with more Evergreen plastic and“For Sale” signs. I made many adjustmentsand cuts to get the cab to best fit the M-55. I used lots of filler plastic to blend thetruck body onto the chassis. The simplefront grill was more plastic scrap.

Finally, I added a dozer blade. Why?Because they are doing a geologicalsurvey. I expect they may have to cut someroads for crews or such. The main part of

the blade is a piece of “For Sale” sign - therest is Evergreen plastic pieces. Thehydraulics also works for the blade. Itmoves up and down freely. I use Evergreenround tubes and real aluminum tube for thehydraulic ram.

The orange paint was straightforward AceHardware brand enamel paint. It is theircounterpart to the ‘Rustoleum” brands. Itbrushes on beautifully and airbrusheseasy as well. The whole rig uses bothmethods throughout - but mostairbrushing is on the major big pieces.

Lastly, I made my own decals and had fun,especially with the “I Love Alaska” oneson both vehicles.

I spent the better part of a month’s worthof evenings here and there building it. Mygoal was to have it for the IPMS SeattleShow held on April 7th - and lo andbehold, I literally finished it at 11:57 pm onApril 6th! I’m already on another creativeimagination rig with another load!

Arthur Sack had been inspired to investi-gate discoid aircraft by how well beercoasters flew in his local drinking estab-lishment. After five flying models, heconvinced the RLM in 1940 to let him builda man-sized version. The sixth, cleverlynamed the AS.6, was born in his Bavarianworkshop, using the landing gear, canopyand some/all of the cockpit from a prangedBf 109, with a distressed Bf 108 similarlydonating everything firewall-forward. Therocket fighter unit 1./JG 400 tested it(unsuccessfully) in 1944, and it wasdestroyed in the waning days of the Reichby the retreating troops.

Needing a quick and simple weekend"recovery" project, I pulled this kit out ofmy stash for an out-of-the-box build, andwas impressed with what I saw. The kit ismolded in a slightly hard light grey plastic– the 17 pieces are dominated by the wing,upper and lower halved. There is also afour-piece resin cockpit and a resin"sparrow strainer" for the cowling'scooling air intake. A crisply vacuformedcanopy brings the parts count up to aneven two dozen – just right for a quick,non-demanding build. The molding qualitywas much better than I'd anticipated for alimited-run kit, having delicate recessedpanel lines on the wing, little flash andrequiring only a little touch-up needed onthe elevator hinges. If you looked at thebox art, which shows an aircraft with thetypical saggy-baggy scalloped fabriccovering, you'd rightly wonder about the

non-scalloped wing with its panel lines.The references say that it had a plywoodcovered wing, so the panel lines are moreaccurate than the box art.

The wings went together well as did thecowling/fuselage halves and the resin

cockpit. The lack of locator pins so typicalon limited run kits isn't a problem. Afterthat, however, things got more sporting.Lacking those locator pins, the assemblyarrows in the instructions showing thecockpit going "somewhere" in the cowl/fuselage left placement rather open to

interpretation. With some filing and trialfitting, though, it all came together. Fittingthe cowl/fuselage to the wing proved to bea similar exercise in trial fitting. Landinggear, exhausts, oil cooler and tail skid weresimilarly positioned by the TLAR (ThatLooks About Right) method of interpretingthe placement arrows.

Only one canopy is supplied, whichseemed odd as most kits with vacuformedcanopies give you two, with the tacitadmission expectation that the first onewill be your "experiment." I carefully cut itout and attached it with Humbrol ClearFix.Here again, there was a small fit problem –the canopy is formed with a flat bottom,instead of following the wing curvature.This creates a gap at the rear of thecanopy, which I bridged by applying moreClearFix.

Finishing was typical, grey primer followedby RLM 65 (Hellblau) undersides, and anRLM 70/71 (Schwartzgrun/Dunkelgrun)splinter pattern on top. The kit paintingguide shows the top as being solid RLM71 with a black anti-skid walkway on theport side. The few photos available onlineare poor quality but hint at a splinter

pattern. I think either approach would bedefensible, but omit the walkway as noneof the photos show one. I finished thepropeller with a woodgrain effect (radometan, gloss, a streaky brushing of brown,and more gloss) and an RLM 02 prop hub.Painting the prop RLM 02 overall would bemore typical, but I wanted a little color onthe model and a "bare" prop is defensiblegiven the aircraft's scrounged origins.

All models have some inaccuracies, somequibbling and some significant. The panellines match the positions of the ribs andspars, but the actual plywood panelswould be larger. I suspect that there aretoo many panel lines molded in, but they'reso delicately done that it is easy to losethem in the painting process, particularlywith the dark colors on top. Another nit-pick is that in the photos, the wing appearsto be more flat-bottomed than is repre-sented in the kit, particularly near thetrailing edge. Again, unless someone hasthe photo in hand and squats down besidethe model to check, nobody's going tonotice.

The sparrow strainer on the nose bowl is,frankly, a cheat. The Bf 108 has a large

cooling intake in the nose bowl, throughwhich the inverted-V Argus engine isclearly visible. Wanting a quick OOB build,and lacking an Argus to drop in, I resignedmyself to the ersatz grillwork. Lessseriously, various small openings in thecowling are represented by raised patches,and the exhaust manifold covers aresimilarly unvented. When it's all built,however, the strangeness of the wholedraws the eye from these minor inaccura-cies.

However, there is a major inaccuracy withregard to the cowling/fuselage. Asmentioned above, the AS.6 used a Bf 108front end, with a transition structure fairingit into the wing bottom and the canopyfront. From the side, this looks like aparallelogram – the thrust line of theengine goes through, and is parallel to, thechord line of the wing. The model ismolded with the thrust line a good 2mmabove the chord line, which is noticeableon such a small model. If you try toposition the propeller in the right spot, youintroduce about 3° downthrust, which isalso quite visible and looks worse. In theend, because I wanted an OOB build, Iended up positioning it parallel to andabove the chord line. (However, this wouldbe an excellent model for your first kitbashbecause the transition section is quite asimple shape to fabricate from sheetstyrene.)

While it is a slightly more time-consumingbuild than the parts count would suggest,it went together very straightforwardly andthe results are pleasing to the eye. It's agreat conversation opener because peoplealways ask if it was a real aircraft.

An Armor Painting Jig

Tim Estes asked me for the dimensions tomy armor painting jig so I decided to sendthem out to everyone. I use this jig all thetime, for airbrushing as well as hand-painting on-board details. I looked aroundfor the schematic my son Reed originallyhad for his woodshop project but it isgone. So, here are some pictures anddimensions: (in inches)

The materials are simple: a standard (1.5 x1.5) piece of wood and 1/8th inch plywood.‘Tacky’ drawer liner was used to cover thetwo main flat surfaces.

Nobody in this group - nobody in theentire IPMS - needs to be reminded that weare approaching the Centennial of theoutbreak of the First World War. Airplaneshad scarcely reached their teens whenthey were suddenly called upon to serveall over the battlefields of Earth. Primarily,they were a source of information neverbefore available to the battlefield com-manders, a role they held with increasingimportance throughout the conflict, andmany more in the future, right up to thepresent day. Before long they wouldthemselves participate in the fighting.

It's certainly time to dig out our Roden andEduard and Wingnut Wings kits…time togo to our bookshelves and re-read Knightsof the Air, The Canvas Falcons, and all theother books about World War I fliers andtheir achievements, made even moreastonishing by the incredible speed oftechnological progress during those fouryears. By the end of the war, the airplane -scarcely even seen by most people in 1914- had darkened the skies in their tens ofthousands.

How appropriate, then, for our very ownMuseum of Flight to host a World War Iaviation all-day seminar, Air War One, onSaturday, April 28. Ken Murphy snappedup a ticket the instant they came availableon the World Wide Web, and insisted I setthat day aside and go with him. Which wedid…and your esteemed Newsletter EditorRobert Allen, Rocket Man Tim Nelson,Morgan Girling, and John Newcombe willvouch for our attendance.

There was a day-long series of hour-longpresentations, starting with a historicaloverview of the great technologicaladvancements made during that period.Until the presenter, Dr. Richard Hallion,explained it, I hadn't realized that thosefour years saw the evolution of five full

generations of engineering sophisticationin fighter design. The first generation, atwar's outbreak, saw light sport planeshastily adapted to military use: fragileMorane and Fokker monoplanes, and theubiquitous Taube. The fifth generation,such a short time later, saw Junkersintroducing all-metal cantilever low-wingmonoplanes with streamlined in-lineengines. No more linen, wood, and wire: bylate 1918, aviation was on the verge ofsweeping into the modern world.

Other presentations showed the birth oftactical and strategic bombing, including'The First Battle of Britain', where theEnglish cities were assaulted by Zeppelins,then by substantial formations of large,purpose-designed heavy bombers. For thefirst time ever, civilians hundreds of milesfrom the front were as vulnerable as thetroops. We haven't yet recovered from theshock, and never will…

Reconnaissance was the major contribu-tion to the War. That wasn't just lookingover the side over the trenches, butrequired the very best cameras and anelaborate system of developing thepictures, analyzing their contents, andassembling information in useful form forthe battlefield commanders. TerryFinnegan explained it all.

Aircraft are ubiquitous now. We scarcelynotice an airplane flying overhead, unlessit's something like the prototype of thenew Boeing 'Dreamliner', as it will affect allour prosperity, probably for decades tocome. But there's no novelty in flyingmachines per se, as there was back then.Too bad the technological progress wasseen at the turn of the last century as howthe lot of Mankind was about to be greatlyimproved by the application of Science. In1914, it all went horribly wrong, and to thisday we are haunted by technologicaldemons of disaster. And yet there wassomething glorious back Then about thenew aeroplanes - warplanes though theybecame - soaring above the sordidtrenches. And even if their crews, at thetime, never were the chivalrous 'Knights ofthe Air' they became in the popular pressuntil it became Mythology, there is still

something above the ordinary in theiraerial achievements.

Back down to Earth at the modelers'viewpoint was the second to the lastpresentation of the day. Dr. LoganHoltgrewe, who did the enormous collec-tions at the MOF - first of all the WorldWar II warplanes of the world, then all theWorld War I 'aeroplanes', including theZeppelin - gave a presentation about howhe managed to do it all. We hung on everyword, devoured every slide. He concludedhis presentation by saying that he hadprobably said more about his projects thanwe would ever have wanted to know, butthose of us modelers in his audience say itwas scarcely enough. His modelingachievements are almost as astonishing asthose of the aircraft designers and fliers ofso long ago.

The whole event is an inspiration to getback to our kit stashes and start buildingreplicas of these almost mythical machines.I hope the coming months will see ourShow-and-Tell tables crowded withmultiple wings, simulated fabric andplywood, struts and wires and rotaryengines, brass radiators, non-black tires,machine guns with airy jackets and ring-and-bead gunsights emerging in front ofopen leather-coamed cockpits, led by two-bladed wooden propellers. As the Centen-nial approaches, let's build replicas of theearly 20th Century machines, that carriedMan into the air for both destruction anddevelopment.
