The Aldrich was the first stop in the United States, after an original unveiling in Hong Kong, of KAWS’s sixteen-foot Companion (Passing Through). During a snowy winter, he quickly became the sculpture garden’s most popular occupant, then traveled to The Standard, a hotel with one of the busiest, high-profile plazas in New York City.

The Aldrich’s exhibitions department launched a unique approach to curatorial programming, placing the focus on solo projects by emerging and mid-career artists, grouped under overarching themes. The Portraiture and Collaborations series presented fourteen exhibitions by an array of international artists.

The Aldrich’s exhibition of James Esber’s ongoing This is not a portrait, comprised of over 100 drawings of Osama bin Laden, became so timely that visitor perception of the project changed overnight and college students debated current events in our galleries as history was being made.

The Aldrich’s presence on Main Street was enhanced by the completed restoration of our historic Old Hundred administration building; the participation of artist Jimmy Grashow’s Uncle Sam float in the Memorial Day Parade; and the welcoming of trick-or-treaters to the new porch for Halloween, when Andrea Dezsö’s installation illuminated the windows.

Like all Aldrich exhibitions, it was viewed by thousands of K-12 students taking part in our innovative education programs.

The Aldrich welcomed Alyson Baker, a new executive director with an ambitious vision for the Museum. Capable new department heads joined her to help lay the groundwork for the future, with the fifty-year anniversary on the horizon.
