Join us at San Francisco Ballet. Where
dancers move in ways that seem to
defy the laws of physics. Where passion
and commitment are transformative.
Where mermaids fall in love, knights
fight windmills, and where good
triumphs over evil.
From the artists who dare to keep
reimagining what ballet can be to the
characters in our stories—Don Quixote,
The Sleeping Beauty, and The Little
Mermaid—our 2019 Season celebrates
the visionaries who seek different ways
of moving through the world.
Like our home city, San Francisco Ballet
builds on a storied and colorful past while
dreaming about an even better future—
embracing both the quixotic quest and
the visionary solution, and celebrating
the passion and discipline that continually
propel us to new heights.
COME DREAM WITH US.

THE SLEEPING BEAUTY
Composer: Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky Choreographer: Helgi Tomasson after Marius Petipa

Sleek and neoclassical, Tomasson’s The Fifth Season was hailed as “mesmerizing and breathtakingly beautiful” by The Orange County Register.
British choreographer Cathy Marston drew from Edith Wharton’s novella Ethan Frome to create a stunning character study of a doomed love triangle in a repressive New England winter. This ode to the pure joy of dance starts with
dancers in simple exercises at the barre, blossoming through increasingly complex movement into a rapturous crescendo of 39 dancers leaping and turning.
The Sleeping Beauty, last year’s smash hit, is back by popular demand! With spectacular sets, ornate costumes, and Tchaikovsky’s celebrated score, Helgi Tomasson’s production of this fairytale classic highlights our dancers’ classical virtuosity in a tale of the triumph of true love’s kiss that will sweep you off your feet.

Created for Paris Opera Ballet by Benjamin Millepied, Appassionata explores relationships—passionate and tumultuous, tender and intimate—through the soaring abandon of three couples.
ANIMA ANIMUSSPECIAL ENCORE
Composer: Ezio BossoChoreographer: David Dawson
Anima Animus is ballet pushed to the extreme; technique stretched to its outer limit. Choreographer David Dawson calls it “physically emotional virtuosity;” audiences call it “riveting.”
DIVERTIMENTO NO. 15Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Choreographer: George Balanchine
Balanchine’s Divertimento No. 15 has “the most sublime choreography ever made to music by Mozart” according to The New York Times. Helgi Tomasson calls it, simply, “a jewel.”

A tech-influenced ballet for a tech-obsessed world, Bound To© explores what we’re missing by constantly needing to be connected to our devices, instead of with each other.

THE LITTLE MERMAID
CONTEMPORARY MASTERPIECE
07
Lera Auerbach
John Neumeier
Composer:
Choreographer:
Dive into the emotional depths of
John Neumeier’s The Little Mermaid,
a heart-wrenching tale of love and sacrifice.
Featuring an original score by renowned
composer Lera Auerbach, Neumeier’s
contemporary version of The Little Mermaid
is a haunting tale of two divergent worlds:
the serenity and simplicity of underwater
life and the complex, often flamboyant life
of humans. The mermaid heroine travels
between both worlds, tormented by her
unrequited love for a prince.
The Little Mermaid deals with mature themes and subject matter. Not recommended for children under 12.
