Richard Summers is a music educator, performer, arranger, conductor, and composer. He grew up in Wheeling WV, became interested in a musical career, and attended the University of Kentucky for two years under a full scholarship. He moved to the NY/NJ area when he was accepted as a clarinetist and saxophonist of the United States Military Academy Band at West Point from 1972-1975. Following his military career, he attended Juilliard, where he received his BM and MM degrees in music performance on clarinet under Leon Russianoff and Joseph Allard. Newly retired from NJ public schools, Mr. Summers taught instrumental music for 32 years in Kinnelon and Pequannock, NJ and served as adjunct professor for concert band, clarinet, and woodwinds at William Paterson University, where he established the Summer Honors Band. He has conducted the North Jersey Area High School and Junior Bands and NJ Region I Intermediate and Junior Bands and also served as president for NJ Area Band. As a performer on clarinet, saxophone, and other woodwind instruments, Mr. Summers has performed as a member of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, Lexington Philharmonic, New Jersey Pops Orchestra, The Orchestra at William Paterson, The New Music Ensemble, The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Adelphi Chamber Orchestra, North Jersey Philharmonic, and has been principal clarinetist, soloist, assistant conductor, personnel manager, and arranger with the Ridgewood Concert Band for over 25 years. Throughout his career, he has been a featured performer both locally and internationally, playing solo works across the US and Europe. Mr. Summers has recently arranged and composed music that has been published for Bandworks Publications, and Carl Fisher Publications, and is hoping to write and publish more music in the future. Mr. Summers resides in West Milford, NJ and has a musical family of his own. His wife Karen and his son Stephen are also clarinetists and perform together in area music ensembles like the Ridgewood Concert Band.

Dr. Steven L. Rosenhaus serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Composition in Steinhardt’s Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions. He is a composer, lyricist, arranger, conductor, educator, author, and performer, as well as a consultant to the music publishing industry and a “show doctor” for musicals produced on- and off-Broadway. The Sächsische Zeitung (Saxon Times, Dresden, Germany) has hailed his music as "expressive and in a neoromantic sound world,” while The New York Times calls it “clever, deftly constructed and likable.” Backstage magazine called

his music and lyrics for the off-Broadway show Critic “sprightly, upbeat, and in the ballad repertory, simply lovely.” Dr. Rosenhaus’ works are played worldwide by such performers as the Dresden Sinfonietta, the Ploiesti Symphony Orchestra (Romania), the Sheboygan Symphony (WI), the New York Repertory Orchestra, the United States Navy Band (Washington, DC), the United States Naval Academy Band, the United States Naval Forces Europe Band (Naples, Italy), the Meridian String Quartet, pianist Laura Leon, clarinetist Guido Arbonelli, and many others. He has received numerous awards and grants from ASCAP, the American Composers Forum, and other organizations, and he is a Yamaha Piano Affiliate Artist. Dr. Rosenhaus teaches concert music composition, writing musical theater (music, lyrics, libretti), and popular songwriting. He has also taught music theory and created “Introduction to Music Publishing and Printing” for the Music Business Program, and was one of the originators of “First Stages” which allows Steinhardt music theater composition students to collaborate with majors in vocal performance. His academic interests include post-tonal theory, especially George Perle’s compositional system of twelve-tone tonality. Dr. Rosenhaus holds a Ph.D. in Composition/Theory from NYU, and M.A. and B.A. degrees from Queens College (CUNY), where his composition mentors included Perle and opera composer Hugo Weisgall. Steven L. Rosenhaus is the author of The Concertgoer’s Guide to the Symphony Orchestra (The Music Gifts Company) and is co-author with Allen Cohen of Writing Musical Theater (Palgrave Macmillan). He is a contributor to music theory journals (Theory and Practice, et al.) and consumer magazines (The Instrumentalist, Strings, etc.). He currently has over 150 original works and arrangements in print published by LudwigMasters Publications, Theodore Presser, Music-Print Productions, and others; recordings of his music can be found on the Richardson, Musical Tapestries, Capstone, and MPP labels. Recent commissions and premieres: New work for cello and piano for the Delta Omicron Foundation; Dream for the Sheboygan Symphony; Fake Folk Song Suite for string orchestra; Nine Feet of Brass (A Concerto for Trombone and Band) for trombonist Keith Johnston and the Sacred Heart University Band; Rescuing Psyche for flute and piano for the New York State Teachers Association; Accordances (Symphony No. 2) for the New York Repertory Orchestra; Horns of Plenty (Cornucopie) for brass ensemble, for the Incontro internazionale di Cornisti “Guelfo Nalli”; Variations on a Neapolitan Theme (“Cicerenella”) for the U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band; and The Apian Way for piano, for pianist Laura Leon.

Concert Fantasia on Motives from Verdi’s “Rigoletto” – Luigi Bassi (1833-1871) was an Italian clarinetist and composer. Most of Bassi’s solo works for clarinet were written in the opera fantasy genre, which was common in 19th Century Italy. In this work Bassi presents melodies borrowed from Verdi’s opera Rigoletto. He offers variations on these melodies to showcase his own ingenuity and the performer’s virtuosity. Flourishing cadenzas and original compositional material create a varied emotional musical landscape for the listener. Very few of Luigi Bassi’s works have remained in print, but the Concert Fantasia on Motives from Verdi’s “Rigoletto” has fortunately survived and continues to challenge only the most talented clarinetists. Selections from “The Pirates of Penzance” – Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) Arr. John P. Sousa The Pirates of Penzance had its official premiere performance in New York City in 1879. This was the only premiere of a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta to be held outside of London. It was the fifth collaboration of the famous British pair and was immediately well received by both audiences and critics alike on both sides of the Atlantic. To this day it remains among the most popular operettas along with H.M.S. Pinafore and The Mikado. The famous John Philip Sousa, who himself was no stranger to operetta as a musical genre, was tremendously enamored with the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. He set a score of selections from the operetta the following year after its premiere and had his bands perform his arrangement often as they toured around the country. The musical marriage of Sullivan and Sousa that resulted in this arrangement afforded people the opportunity to hear and experience the vivacious toe tapping melodies the world has come to recognize so well. Powhatan’s Daughter March – John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) wrote "Powhatan's Daughter March" in 1907 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. Powhatan's daughter is, of course, Pocahontas and Jamestown was the first permanent English colony in the United States. What many people remember about Jamestown is the legend surrounding John Smith and Pocahontas. Myth holds that John Smith, one of the merchant settlers, was captured by the Powhatan Confederation of Native Americans and scheduled for execution. Allegedly, Chief Powhatan's daughter known today as Pocahontas intervened, and his life was spared. Sousa wrote a number of marches to commemorate a variety of events and although this is lesser known, it still contains the colorful and descriptive writing listeners have always come to expect and enjoy from a Sousa march. PROGRAM NOTES Requiem – David Maslanka (b. 1943) received his undergraduate degree from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, and his MM and Ph.D. from Michigan State University. After serving on several music faculties, he has been a freelance composer since 1990. Mr.Maslanka has composed in many genres including symphonies, concertos, choral works and a complete Mass, but he is best known for his wind ensemble and band music. He has received grants from several prestigious organizations including ASCAP and the National Symphony Orchestra, and has served as a guest composer for more than 100 universities, music festivals and conferences. The Ridgewood Concert Band is proud to have been a member of the consortium that commissioned this more recent opus. Mr. Maslanka’s compositional style is rhythmically intense and extremely complex yet possesses an underlying delicate beauty. He works from a meditative standpoint of spiritual inspiration; and this gentle, warm quality permeates his music as he himself has stated, “music is one of the expressions of the soul.” The Requiem as one of his latest additions upholds the composer’s standard. Jericho – Morton Gould (1913-1996) was born in New York and soon recognized as a child prodigy with the ability to improvise and compose. He began to play the piano when he was four years old and his first composition was published two years later. He studied at the Institute of Musical Art (now the Juilliard School). By the age of 21 he was conducting and arranging a series of orchestral programs for WOR Mutual Radio, which appealed to a wide-ranging audience with its combination of classical and popular music. Gould composed over 1,000 works for Broadway, film, television and ballet. He integrated jazz, blues, gospel, country-western and folk elements into his compositions. In Jericho, Gould uses jazz rhythms and modern chords, antiphonal trumpets and heavy percussion to dramatize the biblical story of Joshua blowing down the walls of Jericho. Variations on a Neapolitan Theme – Steven L. Rosenhaus (b.1952) is a composer, lyricist, arranger, conductor, author, educator and performer. His concert music has been called, “clever, deftly constructed and likable” by The New York Times. Dr. Rosenhaus holds a Ph.D. from New York University where he serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Composition. He also holds M.A. and B.A. degrees from Queens College (CUNY). He has over 150 original works and arrangements in print. Variations on a Neapolitan Theme was commissioned by and is dedicated to the Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band, Kenneth Collins. The basis of the variations is “Cicerenella,” a well-known tarantella that is a traditional dance in 6/8 time originating from Naples, Italy. The structure of Variations on a Neapolitan Theme is straightforward. An introduction is followed by the tune in its original minor tonality, presented in a relatively unadorned fashion. Seven variations are presented next, followed by an extended coda. The coda recalls the introductory material as well as a full-out rendition of the original tune.

Dr. Christian Wilhjelm, conductor, professional musician and educator, has been the Ridgewood Concert Band’s Musical Director since it was founded in 1983. He was also Music Director of the renowned Goldman Memorial Band in New York City. He regularly conducts the metropolitan area’s leading professional ensembles such as the Norwalk Symphony. As a French horn player, he has performed under the world’s great conductors including Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, Sir Colin Davis and Arthur Fiedler. As a professional musician, Dr. Wilhjelm has played the French horn with the Boston Symphony, the Boston Pops and, as a principal, with the Boston Ballet Orchestra, the Boston Opera Orchestra and the Richmond Symphony. An honors graduate of the New England Conservatory, he received his doctorate from Columbia University in 1998. He has been the band director at Pascack Hills High School since 1984. Dr. Wilhjelm was recently honored by his election to American Bandmasters Association. He is the 2012 recipient of the Outstanding Conductor Award presented by the Association of Concert Bands. Dr Wilhjelm is the state chair for the National Band Association. In 2013, he was elected to the Board of Directors for the Association of Concert Bands. The Ridgewood Concert Band (RCB), in its 31st season, is one of the leading wind ensembles in the United States. Founded by community leaders, dedicated musicians and Music Director Chris Wilhjelm in 1983, the RCB is committed to engaging and inspiring our audiences with the finest in traditional and contemporary wind literature. Led by Dr. Wilhjelm, the band is composed of professional, amateur and student players drawn from across the tri-state area. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
