Having gained promotion back to Level 5, after two seasons in SW1W, Weston did not have a particular warm welcome to the new environment, not winning a game until their fifth which saw them placed 10th. Just one win in the next three games saw the Seasiders drop to 12th but an unbeaten run in November saw them climb to 6th. However, the Three Wise Men brought gifts of two defeats which checked this revival and they presently lie 7th in the table.

The playing history between the two clubs goes back a long way. I have a record of a game at Weston on a Thursday in mid September 1923. However that was it prior to the war but there was a flurry of games in the immediate post-war period ending in November 1948. Then nothing for 34 seasons when we had three friendlies in the 80s before the advent of the league. Both clubs were placed in South West 1 as it was then, Level 5, and when we met in March 1988 we were already in dire trouble only to be reinforced by a 47-nil defeat at The Recreation Ground. We went our separate ways. It wasn’t until 2006/7 that we met again, this time in the third round of the then Intermediate Cup when we exacted some sort of recompense for that defeat some 18 seasons earlier. We gained promotion that season and we re-engaged in SW1 as we did before but this time in 2007/8. We played each other for a further five seasons before we dipped our toe in the waters of N2S for a couple of seasons only to find it too cold and we were back playing each other in 2014/5. Weston had a couple of seasons in SW1W and here we are today. So we go back a long way but it always remains a pleasure to welcome fellow seasiders to come and feel our sand between their toes for a change.

Having had fine wins against Brixham at home and away to second placed Newton Abbot, the draw against relatively lowly Bracknell to kick off the second half of the season was somewhat of a disappointment. Lily Hill Park has never been a happy hunting ground for us. However we did retain third spot although having slipped a little further behind the two leaders, Dings Crusaders and Newton Abbot.

Please note we play Havant at Havant in the final of the Hampshire Cup on March 17th.

Our referee this afternoon is Zerren Bell who ‘did’ our match against Bracknell before Christmas last season. Zerren’s mentor is Simon Thomas who needs no introduction to Bournemouth supporters and who had the undoubted pleasure of being at Lily Hill Park before Christmas. As always gentlemen, enjoy your afternoon with us.

It is sad to report that Tim Simpkins died on 11th December. Tim had been a loyal supporter for many years and ‘ran’ the Colts back in the 70s. His funeral is at the Bournemouth Crematorium on Monday 8th January at 11.45am.

This extract is from a ‘Text Book of Rugby Football’ written by IMB Stuart (Malvern, Dublin University, Lansdowne, Blackheath, Barbarians, Surrey, Irish International) published in the late 1920s priced 3/6d and I thought the following extract might prove to be of interest to all of us interested in the modern game.

The following was in the opening introductory chapter and sub-titled...

“HOW TO GET FIT”

The first duty of every Rugby footballer is to get fit, otherwise you are not giving your best to the team, and are letting others down.

The first thing, therefore, to do at the beginning of every season is to get your wind right. I advise everybody at the start of the Rugger year to put on an old pair of comfortable footer boots and soft stockings and go out and “kick about”, making short sprints now and then to field the ball. After ten minutes take a ball, and two or three of you run gently up and down the field, passing to each other. Then jog round the field twice, and come straight in and get get dressed. It does you no good hanging round, as you will in all probability get stiff and catch cold. Do this for about a week, or until you feel your legs and wind improving, and then give up for the season the idea of “jogging round”, because it only makes you slow.

Reading such stirring stuff makes you realise just how inadequate the means is in getting fit in the modern era. It is an inspiration to us all not to “let others down”. So no more “hanging round” lads.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF WESTON-SUPER-MARE RFC

#SPIRIT

Weston-super-Mare RFC was formed in 1875 following an announcement in The Weston Mercury, which read: “Football Club. An effort is being made to establish a Club for the promotion of this healthy exercise during the winter months, the game is promising to meet with considerable success. The Hon Secretary Dr Julius Wilmot.”

Early matches were played on what is now a supermarket car park but the move to the present ground was made in 1880. The Club was ambitious even then and a floodlit match was arranged against Clifton. This was a rather unsuccessful experiment put on as an advertising stunt to popularise the public service - Lighting by Electricity. The spluttering arc lamps were not a great success which was a disappointment for the some 4,000 spectators.

Many players arrived in the town from Wales in the Depression looking for work and boosted the Club’s playing strength and for a time it was regarded as one of the best in the country, playing sides like Swansea, Cardiff, Bristol and Bath where a Weston victory was not uncommon. Several players from the Club have played for England, Wales, the Barbarians and

British Lions with the first International player being in 1882 and the last, Nigel Redman, in 1984.With the coming of professionalism, the Club opted to retain amateur status thereby avoiding the inevitable crippling costs that led some other clubs into receivership.

Past successes include the 1st XV retaining the Somerset Cup three years running from 2002 to 2004 and again from 2010 to 2012. The club have now won the cup eleven times, most recently last season against Clevedon and have been runners up six times.

The Colts have been the most successful in the County with many Somerset Cup wins and progressing to the latter stages of the National Colts Cup, most recently with a final at Franklins Gardens, home of Northampton.

The success of the Colts over the last few years has been a boost to the Club. Many ex-Colts players have taken up their place in the first and second team squads, playing with the same sort of passion that has endured over the 140 odd years of the Club’s existence.

Luca was nominated Man of the Match for his outstanding performance against Bracknell before Christmas. Luca has been involved with Bournemouth from when he was in the Under 12s. He continued through to the Colts and made his debut as a substitute for the 1st XV against Redingensians in Nov 2007 before going off to Cardiff UWIC for three years. He had the occasional game with the 2nds back here before he broke into the college 1st XV. In 2011, after finishing at college, Luca played for Malone RFC in Ireland up to Christmas before going off to play for Pro Recco in Italy for the remainder of the season. His rugby ambitions? To continue playing for Bournemouth, naturally!

A Happy New Year to one and all.

We are now half way through the season and are in a good position to really push on. We continue our push today against a very well organised Weston team. We welcome you all today.

The break has allowed bodies to rest and heal, and to reflect on the start of the season which up to now has had some huge highs with wins at Newton Abbott, Ivybridge and Weston which were all big 5-pointers for us. The draw last time out against Bracknell has left a sour taste after having had real control up to half-time only to let things slip away second half.

We will be looking to bounce back this week with a big home win. Thanks for all the support we are getting and long may it continue.

We have had a great weeks training this week and welcome back Sharpie who brings real experience to the squad coupled with a determination that can only help us push on to where we want to get to. Alex Everett-Bolter

is also back in the squad as Winter Wonderland has stopped trading for the next eleven months so has now been able to commit back to rugby, Alex’s a huge asset and has real X factor when it comes to getting over the whitewash. So look out for him coming off the bench.

We also have Wyn Roberts back in training. With his availability now getting back to be more consistent it will give us even more strength and depth in the back three where I believe we are so blessed.

We have been magnificent up front of late and will be looking to take ownership of that aspect today, to enable us to release our exceptionally dangerous back-line.

The 7-a-side competitions were revived after the war after a lapse of some years and were unofficially known as the Hampshire 7s. Bristol for many years sent a team as did Exeter University (St Lukes). But the competition steadily declined with ever decreasing interest and they stopped in the early 1990s.

It was felt in the immediate postwar period that the Club was well served by the local schools but Bournemouth School played rugby footballfrom 1935 to 1955 under Percy Cushion (Bournemouth and Hampshire) and several of the members of these prewar sides played for the Club. Just before the war, the Old Boys became a section of the Sports Club and played under its auspices but nine of them lost their lives in the War.

The annual match against a Club XV on Boxing Day became a postwar feature although this became The Chairman’s XV v The Vice-chairman’s XV certainly by the early 60s. However, as rugby football was not immediately restarted at the school after the war, the Club turned to and supported Portchester School and several useful players have helped the Club although National

Service deprived the Club of their servicesfor long periods. But it was in the 70s that old boys from Portchester School really made their mark when it was only half-jokingly suggestedthat you had to be an Old Portcastrian to play for the Club.

This corresponded to the so-called ‘Golden Era’ (according to Chairman at the time, Wally Wright) when Bournemouth enjoyed unparalleled successwinning many matches and scoring an unprecedented numbers of points—certainly enough to attract the notice of the national press in the form of the Daily Telegraph. The halfback combination of scrum-half Andy Trevett and fly-half Clive Martinez seemed to be the catalyst forthis purple patch. They won the Dorset & Wilts Cup four years in succession, from 1977/8 to 1980/81 and twelve times all told (at thetime of writing). interest to make the venture worthwhile and the last Easter Festival rugby was played in 1995.
