Over 250,000 copies of previous editions soldThis updated version includes new techniques including rotary cutting and free machine embroideryDozens of brand-new photographs of inspirational quilts, both vintage and modern.

DescriptionA revised and expanded edition of a long-standing classic, this expansive book is the clearest and most comprehensive handbook for appliqué, patchwork and quilting available.

This seminal reference guide remains the go-to masterwork for crafters, who will find hundreds of patchwork, appliqué and quilting techniques explained clearly and simply.

The techniques range from fundamentals such as cutting fabrics and hand sewing; to advanced special effects and complex techniques like eight- seam joins. All are explained through more than 1,000 step-by-step illustrations, patterns and templates. The techniques range from the traditional – including Amish quilting patterns and Seven-and-Nine-patch patchwork – to more unusual, like yo-yos. The book also contains glossaries of terms, making this perfect for both beginner and expert.

Over 200,000 copies of the previous edition have been sold worldwide.

Praise for the previous edition:

"Linda Seward’s book has been the essential volume on every quilter’s bookshelf since its publication in 1987 and has never been bettered. This new edition updates the original techniques and embraces the current developments of the craft. Its place on that bookshelf is assured for many years to come." – Lynne Edwards MBE, quiltmaker and teacher

"A definitive choice for the beginner and one worth investigating for a more experienced quilter" – British Patchwork & Quilting

"Linda Seward’s guide has always been my go-to bible for every question I have about quilting. I didn’t think a new edition could be any better, but this refresh is even more inspiring. Not only has she updated technical aspects (adding sections on fusible web appliqué and free-motion quilting, for example), she has chosen spectacular recent quilts to illustrate the text. While marvelling over them, I was reminded that quilting is an ever-evolving art that brings joy and satisfaction. Linda's book captures that perfectly, and leads us through how to do it ourselves." - Tracy Chevalier, novelistand quiltmaker

Key Selling PointsNew book by embroiderer Yvette Stanton, winner of the Nordic Needle Annual Design ContestDiscover the elegance and history of Frisian whiteworkFeaturing clear step-by-step instructions and detailed diagrams. Both left- and right-handed instructions are included.

DescriptionDelve into elegant Frisian whitework with historical whitework specialist, Yvette Stanton.

From Friesland in the Netherlands, this is a style of counted embroidery dating from the 1600s. It was traditionally used on men’s shirt collars, household linen, and samplers.

Whitework is usually stitched in white thread on white fabric and most Frisian whitework is worked this way. However, this technique can also have touches of colour, and some samplers are worked entirely in coloured thread. Alphabets, figurative motifs and geometric shapes are common, and they are interpreted in a wide variety of stitches, such as satin stitch, eyelets, whipped back stitch, and chain stitch; some also with cutwork and drawn thread work.

Explore how Frisian whitework featured on clothing and other textiles, and study the many photographs featuring historical examples. DescriptionFrench knitting, also called spool knitting or i-cord knitting, has been around for centuries. The technique traditionally involves knitting with a handheld 'dolly' or spool with four pins around the edge, to produce a narrow tube of knitting known as an i-cord. The technique involves wrapping the yarn around the pins and then lifting loops over to create the stitches. It's a simple craft that children can do but is a little slow to create the fabric, and many kids lose interest before a decent length of i-cord is produced.

Luckily, technology has moved forward and now there is a hand-held mechanical mini knitting mill available that makes light work of knitting i-cords. Once the machine is threaded all you need to do is turn the handle and watch the magic happen as the i-cord emerges in seconds from the bottom of the mill!

This fresh and modern book gives you all the tips you need to get your mechanical mini knitting mill up and running and then 40 fabulous ideas for projects – from gifts to clothing, accessories to home décor and more. No knitting mill? No problem! All the projects can be knitted in the traditional method too.

Children and adults alike will love the unique designs included, with step-by-step instructions and full-size templates.

Create cute wired shapes, from flowers and hearts to names and wordsSew i-cords without wires onto clothing and bags for a unique, personalized lookMake gorgeous décor for kids' bedrooms with wall hangings and dreamcatchersGive handmade gifts in the form of i-cord jewellery and hair accessoriesHave fun with pompoms, charms, beads, feathers and sequins to add some bling!

This beautiful book will get kids (and adults!) excited to try out a traditional craft in a brand new way and enjoy the making process – the perfect bonding activity to do with your children! The 40 project ideas will spark further creativity – the possibilities for this craft are limited only by your imagination – and will foster a lifelong love of making.
