Safety is always a priority for Metrorail, and this is evident through the ongoing safety campaigns, held throughout the year.

Words: Nosipho Mashologu

SAFETY

Large numbers of commuters continuously access stations illegally by walking across the railway line.

As a result, there have been several injuries and fatalities in recent years. Metrorail pleads with commuters to avoid unsafe footbridges as there are many alternatives available.

For example, there are close to 20 footbridges and 96 normal bridges along Metrorail’s rail network in the Western Cape. Footbridges, such as the one at Lynedoch station near Stellenbosch which opened in 2015, have improved commuter safety and accessibility tremendously.

Safe access

Cross where it is safe

Footbridges and subways that are deemed unsafe are condemned and alternatives are provided.

“There is an alternative safe bridge at Thornton Station to provide access to the platforms. The old bridge was condemned, and public access prevented by way of a

padlocked gate. We strongly discourage the public from endangering their lives by using it – there is safe access to the station and they should use that,” says Metrorail’s Riana Scott in response to a commuter’s enquiry regarding a footbridge at Thornton station.

Consider the following tips whenever you use footbridges

cross railway lines. • Always make sure you adhere to the

signs for your safety.• Railway tracks should not be used as

a shortcut or a walking trail.• Never force barriers open except in

case of an emergency.• o not climb on the electri cation

structures or over the sides offootbridges.

• Never follow other commuters whoare using illegal footbridges.

1. The footbridge at Lynedoch station has improved commuter safety.

2 & 3. Metrorail takes several safety precautions to ensure commuters’ safety at Thornton station.

International Mother Language Day is celebrated on 21 February. We chat to Craig ‘Makhosi’ Savage, owner of UBuntu Bridge, about his love for the Nguni languages.Words: Yonga Balfour

Tell us about yourself?I was born in Camps Bay and raised in the southern suburbs of Cape Town. I had a happy childhood and attended the University of Cape Town (UCT).

How were you exposed to Nguni languages? In the early 90’s I participated in a children’s book and television (TV) series titled The Adventures of Craig and Cardo. It was written by my grandmother and illustrated by my mother. The book and TV series featured my best friend – the son of our neighbour’s domestic worker – and I. The domestic worker at my home was an isiXhosa-speaking lady, and we had a close relationship. After varsity, I left Cape Town for rural Eastern Cape. It was then, in 2004, when I connected deeply with the isiXhosa language.

Tell us about your isiXhosa name, Makhosi.I was given the name Makhosemvelo by the sangomas who accommodated me in the Eastern Cape. It means ‘ancestors’.

Why did you start UBuntu Bridge?I started volunteering in township high schools as a language teacher. I believed that it was my calling. UBuntu Bridge began when people noticed the impact my language skills made, and start asking me to teach them. Many isiXhosa people have encouraged me to teach their language to others. It was relevant for me to help build bridges between the divided people and cultures in our land while making a humble living.

How did you come up with the name UBuntu Bridge? My parents came up with it when I told them what I was planning to do – to connect people through language.

What does International Mother Language Day mean to you?It is a chance to acknowledge and celebrate our linguistic diversity. It is also an opportunity for us to acknowledge our cultural and ancestral heritage and the way in which it is expressed through language.

Have a helpful heart

Acts of Random Kindness Day is around the corner – Friday, 17 February involves doing something selfless for others. We’ve rounded up a few suggestions to get you on your way.

Words: Yonga Balfour

Give your seat to an elderly person or pregnant woman on the train Getting up for the elderly is a thoughtful thing to do, as they cannot stand on their feet for too long. Pregnant women may also tire easily.

Give way to learnersMake way for school children to enter and exit the trains safely and easily. Doing so will ensure that they are not in harm’s way.

Volunteer at an old age home or shelterPack fruit baskets and donate them to an elderly home or offer the staff a hand for a few hours. If you have a soft spot for animals, visit a nearby animal shelter and help out where you can.

Keep it clean Volunteer at the many clean up campaigns along the various routes. We are always looking for volunteers to give of their time to clean up and beautify the stations.

Donate what you don’t needClean out your closet and put aside all the clothing you don’t need. You can donate the clothes to a needy relative or a homeless shelter. What’s old to you is new to someone in need.

ffertob b sitBuy a friend a movie ticket and offer to babysit. New parents often need some free time and if you can help them have it, reach out.

e ournei hbourIf your neighbour is an elderly man or woman offer to go to the grocery store for them, help them in the garden, or simply make them a cup of tea.

Lend a helping handHelp those with prams and heavy baggage to enter and exit the train easily and safely.

The 22 of February marks the annual National Healthy Lifestyles Awareness Day, which highlights the dangers of obesity, unhealthy eating and physical inactivity. Words: Nosipho Mashologu

The South African Government uses National Healthy Lifestyles Awareness Day to promote the

five elements of its healthy lifestyle campaign. The elements are the promotion of good nutrition, regular physical activity, tobacco control, interventions against alcohol and substance abuse, and promotion of safe sexual behaviour. We take a look at some benefits of healthy lifestyles and tips to help us live a well-balanced life.

HEALTH

DEBUNKING NUTRITION MYTHS• You don’t need to eat every two to three

hours to lose weight. Eat when you’re hungry, but choose healthy and nutritious foods.

THE PRO’S OF STAYING ACTIVE

• Exercise helps to improvebrain performance andproductivity.
