It is important to
• Look at the work from many different points of view.
• Look at the work in different lighting conditions.

Notice how the ears appear to be at
different levels when the viewer’s position is changed only slightly.

Notice
The inner corner of the eye is the deepest part of the face.

The face looks pretty flat from
the front.

But it is very curved.

The eye can look sideways because there is
a dent in the skull as it wraps around the eye.
![Page 12: Search for relationships of size, shape and position.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56816150550346895dd0d9e3/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)

From the front, the widest part of the face seems to be across the
cheekbones.
![Page 14: Search for relationships of size, shape and position.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56816150550346895dd0d9e3/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
![Page 15: Search for relationships of size, shape and position.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56816150550346895dd0d9e3/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
But the cheekbones are a lot more narrow.
What you see as widest from the front is the
distance between the ears.
![Page 16: Search for relationships of size, shape and position.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56816150550346895dd0d9e3/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
The face also looks much wider by the
mouth than it really is.
That perceived width is actually at the back of
the jaw.

Beginners tend to make the forehead very square
and vertical.
![Page 19: Search for relationships of size, shape and position.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56816150550346895dd0d9e3/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
But it is curved.
![Page 20: Search for relationships of size, shape and position.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56816150550346895dd0d9e3/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Beginners make the mouth very flat.
But the corners go way back.
![Page 21: Search for relationships of size, shape and position.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56816150550346895dd0d9e3/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
![Page 22: Search for relationships of size, shape and position.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56816150550346895dd0d9e3/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Beginners often make the area
under the center of the nose
concave and flat. But it is not.
![Page 23: Search for relationships of size, shape and position.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56816150550346895dd0d9e3/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Highest here.
![Page 24: Search for relationships of size, shape and position.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56816150550346895dd0d9e3/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
And slants towards the corners and edges of the nostrils.
![Page 25: Search for relationships of size, shape and position.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56816150550346895dd0d9e3/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
The change of angle defines the edges of the lips.
![Page 26: Search for relationships of size, shape and position.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56816150550346895dd0d9e3/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
The “two front teeth” area descends from a point
about midway from the tip of the nose to the edge of
the nostril.
![Page 27: Search for relationships of size, shape and position.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56816150550346895dd0d9e3/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
The jaw ends at the ear.
![Page 28: Search for relationships of size, shape and position.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56816150550346895dd0d9e3/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Beginners often don’t leave
enough room for skin and
sideburns before placing the ear.
![Page 29: Search for relationships of size, shape and position.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56816150550346895dd0d9e3/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
They also make pinheads or Easter Island
heads.
![Page 30: Search for relationships of size, shape and position.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56816150550346895dd0d9e3/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
But there is a lot of brain case back there.
![Page 31: Search for relationships of size, shape and position.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56816150550346895dd0d9e3/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Now that you know what to look for, feel free to distort to your
heart’s content.
![Page 32: Search for relationships of size, shape and position.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56816150550346895dd0d9e3/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Distortion is the basis of creative and expressive
work as well as caricatures.
