Going for the

Gold

in 1924 the first Olympic Winter Games were held in Chamonix, France; 16 nations participated, bringing 258 athletes to compete in 16 events. the first Paralympic Winter Games took place in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, in 1976 with competitions in alpine and nordic Skiing for amputee and visually impaired athletes, and a demonstration event in ice Sledge racing.

the 2010 Vancouver/Whistler Olympic Winter Games invited some 2,500 athletes to compete in 15 sports and over 86 separate medal events and in the Paralympic Winter Games, approximately 600 athletes to compete in five sports and 64 separate medal events.

Canada has been an integral part of the Winter Games since their inception—our history, the athletes of years past, the shining moments, the anticipation and dedication of bringing the games to British Columbia and our local heroes of today are celebrated in these “Going for Gold” commemorative articles.

Since2003,whentheinternationalolympicCommitteechosetheVancouver-Whistlerbidoverseveralothercompetingcities,opinionhasbeendividedoverwhetherornottheWintergameswouldultimatelyprovebene-ficialforBritishColumbia.Skepticalcriticisminitiallyfocusedontheenormouscostourfederal,provincialandmunicipalgovern-mentswouldhavetobeartostagethese27 daysofeliteentertainment.

theeconomicconcernwaslargelymollifiedbythehugeinfluxoffederaldollarsthathavesubsequentlyflowedintoBritishCol-umbia,moneythatwewouldcertainlynothaveexpectedtoreceiveotherwise.thishasnowfundedinfrastructureprojectsliketheexpansionoftheSeatoSkyhighway,venueandhousingconstructioninVancou-verandWhistlerandallmannerofathletic,social,culturalandenvironmentallegaciesthatwillultimatelybenefiteveryregionofourprovince.

iftheimpactofourhighlysuccessfulexPo ’86isanymeasure,awell-hosted2010WintergameswillundoubtedlybringtourismandbusinessbenefitstoBritishColumbia.onesignificantbenefithasbeenthattheworldcreditcrunchhashadlessimpactonVancouverandWhistlerduetotheprotectionofthisfinancialandconstruc-tioninfrastructure.

Whileeconomicmattersareimportant,theenduringvalueoftheWintergamestoBritishColumbiansultimatelywillnotbementionedonabalancesheet.thegoalembodiedintheolympiccharter,estab-lishedbyPierredeCoubertin,wasintendedtodrawuponthemoreenlightenedaspectsofournature“tocontributetobuildingapeacefulandbetterworldbyeducatingyouththroughsport,practicedwithoutdis-criminationofanykindintheolympicspirit,whichrequiresmutualunderstandingwithaspiritoffriendship,solidarityandfairplay.”

olympicWintergamesleavebehindlegacies,ofwhichnewinfrastructure,hopefullybulgingcommercialcoffersandworldwidepublicattentionarebutafew.thereis,however,onlyonetrulylastinglegacybequeathedtoeachhostcity:aplaceinolympichistory.

CanadaandCanadianathleteshavebeeninstrumentalintheforgingoftheWintergamestradition.asanationwehaveparticipatedsincetheearliestdays,becom-ingahostforthefirsttimeinCalgaryin1988.in2010,VancouverandWhistlerwillhostthe21stolympicWintergames,andaspecialplaceinhistorywillbeoursforever.

thoughfigureskatingwasincludedintheoriginallistofeventsproposedin1894attheParisconferencethateventuallyrekindledtheolympicflame,thesporthad

towaituntiltheLondonolympicsof1908foritsdebut.itssecondappearancecamein1920attheantwerpgames,whenthefirstolympicicehockeytournamentwasalsoheld.Canada’steam,theWinnipegFalconsnaturallytookthegold,andarerecognizedbytheCanadianolympicCommitteeasthefirstgoldmedalhockeyteam.

thefirstofficialWintergames,aswhollyseparatefromtheSummer,wasstagedin1924atChamonix,France,whenNordicskiracersandjumpers,four-manbobsled-dersandspeedskatersjoinedthefigureskatersandhockeyplayers.theevent,atthattime,wasbilledasan“internationalWinterSportsWeek”,adesignationsub-sequentlyrevisedtomakeChamonixthefirst“official”Wintergames.

atChamonix,therewereonly16events,withonly13womenparticipatingfromamongthe293athletes.oneofthesewasan11-year-oldNorwegiangirlwhofinished8thbehindtheaustrianfigureskatinggoldmedallist,hermaPlank-Szabo.thelittlegirlwhodidn’tmedalwasSonjahenie,andshewouldgoontobecomeaninternationalfilmstar.everyWintergamessincehashadstorieslikeSonja’s.Vancouver2010willnodoubthaveitssharetoo.

therootsoftheParalympicmovementcanbetracedto1944,intheStokemandevilleSpinalinjuriesunitinaylesbury,england,whereneurosurgeon,dr.Ludwigguttmann(laterknighted)beganusingorganizedsportstomotivatethespinalcord-injuredpatientsinhiscare(mostlyyoungandformerlyactivesoldiers,sailorsandairmen)toexercise.thefirstteamsport,wheelchairpolo,wasplayedinemptywardswithshortsticksandadiskforapuck;patientsplayedagainstphysiother-apists,andlateragainstlocalfootballclubs.injuriesresultingfromthefiercecompetitionledtopolobeingreplacedbywheelchairbasketball.

SixteencompetitorsparticipatedinthefirstStokemandevillegamesfortheParalysedonJuly28,1948,acompetitionthatwasafterwardheldyearly,andbecameinternationalin1952withtheadditionofadutchteam.dr.guttmann,consideredthe“FatherofSportsforPeoplewithdisabilities”,dreamedofaninternationalsportscompetitionforpeoplewithdisabilitiesheldeveryfouryearsasthe“equivalentoftheolympicgames.”twelveyearslater,hisvisionbecamearealitywhen400athletesfrom23countriestookpartinthe1stParalym-picgamesheldinrome,italy.

“torontolympiad,”thatwaslaterrecognizedasthe5thParalympicSummergames.thatsameyear,thefirstParalympicWintergameswasheldinornskoldvik,Sweden.Canada’sfirstParalympicWintergamesteamwasmadeupofsixathletes:rodBackie,gerryButter-fieldJohngow,Lornamanzer,donmcgregorandBrentmunroe.Competinginalpineskiingandcross-countryskiing,Canadamanagedtopostagoldandthreebronzemedalsinthatgroundbreakinggames.

tomakealabyrinthinestoryshort,anon-profitinternationalumbrellaorganization,theinternationalParalympicCommittee(iPC)wasinitiallyformedandoperatedin1989by162NationalParalympicCom-mittees(NPCs)fromfiveregionsandfourspecificinternationalsportsfederations(ioSdS).ithassinceevolvedtobecomethefullydemocraticandinclusivesportsorganizationwerecognizetoday.

SinceParalympicathletescompetebasedontheirfunctionalabilities,inorderforathleteswithdifferentdisabilitiestocompetefairlyagainstoneanother,theonceconfus-ingplethoraofdetailedsub-classificationshasbeenstreamlinedsincethe2006torinogamesintothreeclasses:Sitting,Stand-ingandVisuallyimpaired.thatmeans,forinstance,thatineachofthealpineskiingdisciplines:downhill,Slalom,giantSlalom,
