ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A stubborn refusal to go ahead on a project mystifies col-leagues who expected more flexibility. But once you explain your position, they’ll understand and even applaud you.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A relationship seems to be stuck in the same place. Now it’s up to you, dear Bovine, to decide how far you want it to go and how intense you want it to be. Choose well and choose soon.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A relationship progresses more slowly than you would prefer. Best advice: Insist on a frank and open discussion. What is learned could change minds and, maybe, hearts.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s all right to be grateful to a workplace col-league who has done you a good turn. But gratitude shouldn’t be a life-long ob-ligation. The time to break this cycle is now.

LEO (July 23 to Au-gust 22) It’s going to be es-pecially nice to be the King of the Zodiac at this time. A recent money squeeze

eases. Plans start to work out, and new friends enter Your Majesty’s domain.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Before you make a commitment on any level (personal, professional, legal), get all the facts. There might be hidden problems that could cause trouble later on.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Personal relationships improve. Professional prospects also brighten. A job offer could come through by month’s end. An old friend seeks to make contact.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your senses detect that some-thing is not quite right about a matter involving a workplace colleague. Best advice: Follow your keen instincts and don’t get involved.

SAGITTARIUS (No-vember 22 to December 21) A prospect offers re-wards, but it also demands that you assume a great deal of responsibility. Knowing you, you’re up to the challenge, so go for it, and good luck.

CAPRICORN (De-cember 22 to January 19) A favor you did a long time ago is repaid, as a trusted colleague steps in to help you with a suddenly ex-panded workload. A fam-ily member has important news.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new job offer could require moving across the country. But before you let your doubts determine your decision, learn more about the potentials involved.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your sense of fair play doesn’t allow you to rush to judgment about a friend who might have betrayed you. Good! Because all the facts are not yet in.

BORN THIS WEEK: You have a romantic nature that allows you to find the best in people. You would excel at poetry and drama.

Twenty-two students took part in Estevan Comprehensive School’s 30 Hour Famine on Friday. The famine ran from 8 a.m. on May 4 to 2 p.m. the following day, and students began by learning some-thing new about the other participants before getting the activities started in the courtyard on Friday.

A 30-hour fast gave local high school students an opportunity to raise some money for children in Third World countries.

Estevan Comprehen-sive School students went hungry last Friday and Saturday as they took part in World Vision’s annual 30 Hour Famine. The famine is a mainstay fundraiser for students at the school and continued this year with 22 students raising $3,204 for World Vision.

While ECS students have participated in the fundraising for a long time, the social justice club recently took charge of organizing the event. This is the second year for their involvement.

Grade 11 s tudent Brayden Gervais is a mem-ber of the social justice club and this is the second year he has taken part in the famine.

He said it’s a way to learn about less fortunate

ECS’s 30 Hour Famine brings students together

children, particularly those in poorer countries, and a great way to meet other students in the school.

“It was a really great time, we did a lot of group and team-building activi-ties,” said Gervais. “We talked a lot about the prob-lems in Africa and other Third World countries and how we can solve them. We really learned a lot. It was a great experience.”

The students gathered together in the courtyard after school on Friday, after already skipping lunch, they played games and had lots of activities to keep their minds off food. They would go without three more meals. The famine lasted from 8 a.m. on Friday to 2 p.m. Saturday.

There are four catego-ries that can be donated to. Each student identifies where they would like their pledges to go, but because of the ubiquity of

the Kony 2012 campaign, which pledges to arrest Joseph Kony over alleged war crimes, a lot of money was going to protecting children.

World Vision came into the school for a presentation earlier this year and talked about raising money for child protection in Africa in an effort to work with the Kony 2012 campaign toward a singular goal.

“We are going to be giving most of our money to safety, so safety of people, shelter, protecting kids from war,” added Gervais.

The experience is what’s important for him. When the students take part in the famine, it’s a group of like-minded youth looking to make a difference some-where in the world. Gervais said that connection with the other students is part of what the 30-Hour Famine is all about.

“It’s all sorts of team-

building activities and get-ting to know people, and bonding over our mutual decision to try and help these kids and help these families in Third World countries.”

After participating last year, he and his fellow so-cial justice club members took it upon themselves to get other students involved so they could raise more for the children who need it.

“As a social justice club we got together and decided that those of us who did it last year would definitely come and try to recruit more members, because the more the mer-rier and the more people we can spread this cause to the better.”

One of the ECS teach-ers who helped organize the event through the social jus-tice club was Ashley Cote, who said everybody was very hungry and ready to eat by the end of the 30th hour.

EXPRESSSOUTHEAST TRADER Mother’s Day is coming up, and I now

have a good reason to fret over it.It’s something I’ve never done before.

I’m not the kind of person who worries about these special days. Christmas never stresses me out. I just read a story, how-ever, about how mothers secretly hate their mother’s day gifts.

Mine is already in the mail. In fact, it arrived earlier this week and now there is no turning back. I thought it would be fine. I know my mother pretty well. When I think about it, she would totally lie right to me and say my gift was as special as my rich brother’s. OK, I don’t have a rich brother to compete with, but she would do it anyway.

Just last weekend I was talking to my mom and told her the gift’s in the mail and should be arriving soon. I told her all about the gift she can expect in the mail, all proud that I remembered enough in advance to actually get her something more than an e-card.

Her response was, ”You don’t have to get me anything.”

Mothers can be very misleading

After becoming paranoid and self-gift-conscious from reading this article, I’m pretty sure how to decipher that mom code: “Your gifts are nothing to me, and neither are you.”

In this article, it also said that on av-erage, Canadians will be spending more than $84 on their mothers. If most mothers secretly dislike their $80 gifts, my $30 gift will probably end up being used as a really thick coaster or a paperweight.

I also confess that while I spent $30, $8 of those were spent on shipping and handling. That’s right, almost one-third of my mother’s gift is shipping.

Maybe I should just stop reading the news. I hate to say it as a reporter myself, but the news is just making me paranoid

and cynical. Now when my mother tells me she

really likes the gift I gave her, we’ll have this conversation where we’re both saying one thing and thinking the opposite. I’ll say something like, “I’m glad you like it,” but will be thinking, “Stop lying to me.”

I always thought there was some reward for just remembering Mother’s Day, like remembering her birthday. The thought is more important than the gift itself, isn’t it?

My sister decided to not give Mom a gift this year. She just finished a year in school, making little money and already had four years of student debts to pay down. She’ll probably get her a card, and they’ll have brunch or something. That’s probably better than my gift, but I put some thought into it.

It’s a very similar whats-a-doodle to what I got her last year, and she told me she really liked. Now I know better. She was just giving me the mom-party line.

Just know that I try really hard for this Mom. Happy Mother’s Day.

Federal moves mystifying for Ag sectorThe federal government, under the

leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, is an increasing mystery in terms of how it deals with agriculture.

Apparently Harper, Agriculture Min-ister Gerry Ritz, and the rest of the Con-servative clan are the wisest members of Parliament we have managed to elect in 75 years.

At least it seems that way as a group of MPs elected by a minority of Canadi-ans are focused on changing many of the long-held programs of farming.

This space has related the govern-ment’s handling of the Canadian Wheat Board often, so I won’t spend much time relating the Conservatives’ arrogant deal-ings in terms of that institution.

In its recent budget, the government also announced it is eliminating the Ca-nadian Food Inspection Agency’s enforce-ment of non-health and non-safety food labeling claims.

The CFIA has a strong reputation in ensuring food safety in this country, and consumers should not be happy with that decision. When you think about how criti-cal food safety is, nothing that even holds a chance of weakening the food security system should be seen as a wise move.

The same budget also announced that the federal government, through the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administra-tion, will be getting out of the community

pasture business. The PFRA operates 85 community

pastures with a history dating back to the 1930s when the federal department took on the role of reclaiming lands across the Prairies that were impacted by the severe drought of that decade.

Since then the PFRA has remained an important agency in terms of water management, grants flowing through for dugouts and wells, and in dealing with droughts in various ways, including offer-ing thousands of trees through the years for shelterbelts.

When it comes to research into im-portant erosion control farm techniques, such as zero-till, the PFRA has been there.

The community pastures have offered farmers a source of summer pasture for their cattle, coming with experienced pasture managers looking after the cattle.

Most pastures even offer access to top quality bulls for breeding, helping producers to access genetics without the added work associated with wintering the animals.

It is a system that has worked pretty well for some 80 years, but under the Con-servative government’s current mandate, it’s an area that gets cut.

The federal government is suggesting they will divest themselves of pasture management over the next few years, with the plan to hopefully have the provinces, or producer groups take over.

That might sound reasonable, but there is something to be said for having the ability to buy bulls for 85 pastures and moving them around as they need.

Having pasture managers paid by a federal government agency is likely to offer better dollars than being paid by 85 local co-operatives.

On the surface, rancher control might seem a natural progression, but in this case producers haven’t exactly been vocal for the need for change, which at least was the case with the Canadian Wheat Board where a lot of producers were not happy.

In the case of the PFRA, community pastures weren’t even a major drain on federal coffers at a time when balancing the books is just a dream.

And this begs the question: why the Conservatives are doing this?

It also reminds one of the old adage “if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.” But of course, Harper and crew are just that much smarter than every government since the 1930s, or at least they seem to believe they are.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, MAY 11, 2012 Page 5

By: Jordan Baker

Last week a student in a Nova Scotia was suspended because he wore a shirt that read, “A life is wasted without Jesus.”

This incident set off something of a fire-storm across comment sections, inciting some hot feelings.

This isn’t a religious debate; it’s a matter of free expression and school policy.

I recall from Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale that men-tions that the characters once had the “freedom to,” but now have the “freedom from.”

The school in this case was practising freedom from. They stripped one student’s freedom to wear a T-shirt that would be offensive to only the most sensitive students in an effort to give all others in the school a freedom from this student’s message.

His message was a little close-minded and shallow, suggesting anybody who doesn’t see things his way is wasting their lives, but he should certainly still be allowed to express it.

That also brings us to school policy. My high school didn’t have a dress code, but there was still a sense of wearing what is appropriate. I don’t believe the Mercury has a dress code, or if we do, I was never told about it, but it would still be inappropriate to wear some pieces of clothing.

The student in this case probably should not have been suspended, as the best place for children and teenagers is in school. It could have been a teaching moment for the student, however.

Students, along with everybody else, are expected to dress appropriately for the different situations they find themselves in. The shirt clearly fell under their policy for inappropriate garb, but the penalty should be something a little lighter than a suspension; like on Tuesdays and Thursdays he wears a “Life is wasted with Jesus” shirt. That seems like a reasonable compromise.

By: Tonaya Marr

I think freedom of expression is extremely important. And being free to express one’s religious preferences is also important. So I don’t have an issue with this student wearing a shirt professing his religious beliefs. He’s a proud Christian and there’s nothing wrong with that. I assume he made that pretty clear without having it splashed across his shirt.

Plus, don’t we allow students to wear turbans and burkas to school, because we don’t want to discriminate? It’s definitely not fair to tell one person it’s OK to express his/her beliefs, while punishing another for doing the same.

However, what I don’t agree with is trying to force your beliefs onto someone else. I’ve been the victim of this more times that I can count, especially when I was younger. It’s uncomfortable and doesn’t create a positive environment; I know that for me, it created a lot of resentment toward the religion that was being forced down my throat. From what I’ve read, this student was pretty busy trying to evangelize his classmates, and when he was turned down, he didn’t back off.

So I think there’s a bigger picture here to consider. Children who head to school proud of their faith and don’t rub it in the faces of other students, they’re great, they’re not hurting anyone. But if the same students, proud of their faith, pestered their classmates to convert, they’d be crossing that line between acceptable and unacceptable. And it sounds like this student was the latter example, and the ac-tions taken against him were a result of everything, his “Life is wasted without Jesus” shirt included.

Should school divisions punish students who wear shirts with controversial messages?

I’m generally fairly observant and after sev-eral weeks (or months) of weather that has fluctuated between nice and not-so-nice, I feel comfortable saying that it feels like summer. Further observa-tion into the lives of those around me has led me to confirm that it is, indeed, summer for all intents and purposes. Here’s how I know:

1) I’m working in-doors eight hours each day and the weather is nice. When I do get to leave my office, the pants I put on in the morning are often too warm and my jacket makes me look over-dressed. I’m frequently forced to rig up a contraption with my purse straps to avoid wearing it. So, in summary, I know it’s summer because I’m more awkward, more publicly, than I normally am.

2) The people around

So it’s summer now?

me seem to be more in-tune with what to wear, and they’re taking summer clothing to the extreme. I get that it’s getting close to 20° some days, but it is still way too chilly for anyone to be wandering around with their butt cheeks hanging out. Simi-larly, maybe your kids still need to wear jackets when they’re playing in the yard at 8 p.m.? Or, to solve both these issues, it’s never re-ally “Butt cheek season,” and keep your kids indoors FOREVER so they don’t wake me up on the week-ends by yelling outside my window.

3) There are a lot more people riding their bikes. This is awesome, because finding alterna-tive, environmentally-friendly methods of travel is the way of the future. You bike-riders, you guys are great. You’re saving the day. However, I do

have one request: please decide if you’re a vehicle or a pedestrian. That’s my major pet peeve with bicyclists. They never seem to want to obey the rules of the road. It’s not OK to ride on sidewalks, turn illegally wherever you want and bike through crosswalks after behaving like a vehicle until that red light became too inconve-nient. Consider how many bicyclist-vehicle accidents there are that are prevent-able.

4) Soccer has started. I’m not playing women’s soccer in Estevan this sum-mer (which will probably be largely unnoticed by my team), but I am play-ing co-ed soccer in Regina (which, again, will largely go unnoticed by my team). I’m super content to run up and down the sideline, pretending to play midfield and really hoping that no one passes me the ball.

My current mission is to teach my new team not to pass to me. So far, I’ve got three of my teammates conditioned (including my boyfriend) and we’ve only had a brief scrimmage. In other soccer related news, I haven’t been able to move my legs since first kicking a soccer ball three days ago. This can only mean good things, right?

5) My middle sister is home and I keep waking up expecting messages complaining about her late-night partying ways, which I don’t expect will improve, considering she turned 19 on Tuesday (it was Mom’s birthday too, but we won’t mention her age). Happy belated birthday, Kendelle! I’m very glad not to be living at home this summer and hearing you come home at 3 a.m. Happy belated birthday, Mom! Good luck!

Tonaya Marr has been wearing SPF 30 sunscreen every day since the end of April, for fear of getting a sunburn. Even though she works indoors. If you want to get hold of Tonaya to comment on that fact, or just to chat, send her an e-mail at [email protected] or send her a tweet @TonayaMarr.

For the third straight year, the Edmonton Oilers have an envious decision to make: Which of the ultra-talented junior play-ers coming into this year’s draft will they anoint as the No. 1 selection?

It should be easy, right? Just go with the consensus No. 1-ranked player, Russian Nail Yaku-pov, who has played the last two seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with Sarnia and garnered Ovechkin and Kovalchuk comparisons.

But wait just a minute. The Oilers have earned the No. 1 pick three years in a row, and offence is not a problem (11 teams scored fewer goals than the Oil-ers this year). Thanks to consecutive selections of Jordan Eberle (Regina Pats), Taylor Hall (Os-hawa Generals) and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Red Deer Rebels), conventional wis-dom suggests the stockpil-ing of young snipers is complete. Why add another sniper? To lose games 8-6 instead of 8-4?

The Oilers need help on defence and, perhaps in goal. General manager Steve Tambellini looks around the NHL playoffs and sees a “defence-first” mentality leading to play-off success. But the Oilers don’t have a Shea Weber, an Alex Pietrangelo, a Drew

Do the Oilers need more offence?Doughty.

Sunmedia’s Steve Simmons says Tambellini is in an enviable position. Instead of taking Yakupov at No. 1, Simmons suggests he should consider trading that pick to a team in need of a sniper and which might have a top-four defence-man to offer in exchange. Then, by picking later in the first round, the Oilers could still snare a poten-tial all-star on defence - perhaps Matthew Dumba of Red Deer or Morgan Rielly of Moose Jaw. (The assumption here is that the top-ranked defenceman, Everett’s Ryan Murray, won’t last past No. 3 or 4 overall.)

Two top-four defence-men to add to that po-tentially explosive Oiler offence? It could secure Tambellini’s job for 10 more years and eliminate the chuckling that goes on across Canada whenever anyone mentions the phrase “the city of champions.”

So how about this for a scenario: Winnipeg sends big defenceman Dustin Byfuglien along with its No. 9 selection in the first round and a second-round selection to the Oilers for the No. 1 pick. Jets get what they need (an offensive star in Yakupov) and the Oil-ers get Big Buff and then perhaps Dumba or Rielly at

No. 9, along with another second-rounder.

Everyone’s happy, right? But let’s be clear: Byfuglien’s no Weber or Pietrangelo or Doughty, but he’s a big body and he’s a defenceman and for the Oil-ers, such moves might be a step in the right D.

• Greg Cote of the Miami Herald: “A couple from the Florida Keys bid $100,000 in a char-ity auction to spend a day with Tim Tebow. If I’m spending $100K for a day with Tebow, he’d better be leaving a $99,500 sports car in my driveway.”

• Another one from Cote: “Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie, 27, just had his 10th child with eight different women. I could be wrong, but I doubt Tebow would approve.”

• Comedy writer Jerry Perisho: “Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees, who ran away from an off-campus party, was caught by a police officer and ar-rested. Rees had a 0.11 per cent blood alcohol level

and the police officer was offered a scholarship as a linebacker.”

• Perisho again: “In the perjury trial of former pitching great Roger Clem-ens, Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte said he might have misheard Clemens say he took human growth hor-mones. I’m just glad all the real problems in our coun-try are solved so Congress can focus on baseball.”

• Comedy writer Alex Kaseberg: “Los Angeles Laker, Metta World Peace, has been suspended for seven games for throwing a vicious elbow at the head of Oklahoma player, James

Harden. For three days Harden’s head hurt like a Kardashian on ‘Jeopardy.’”

• Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle: “(Commissioner) David Stern is no pushover. Had Metta World Peace killed James Harden with that elbow, Stern would have ordered World Peace to apologize at the funeral.”

• Headline at Fark.com: “Red Sox sign Mark Prior in order to fill a need on the disabled list.”

• Words of wisdom from poker legend Ama-rillo Slim, who passed away recently in Texas: “When you sit down at the poker table, look around for the sucker. If you don’t see one, get up and leave - you’re the sucker.”

• Brad Dickson of the Omaha (Neb.) World-Her-ald, explaining the crowd of 70,000 for WrestleMania: “With America forced to go up to 18 months

between Adam Sandler movies, we’re starved for bad acting.”

• “I don’t want to say that the Cleveland Browns are a bad team,” wrote Gary Bachman on Facebook, “but two play-ers they drafted have fled to Canada.”

• Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com: “So maybe (Kentucky Derby winner) ‘I’ll Have Another’ won’t win the Triple Crown. But he also won’t get arrested, won’t give a stupid interview, and all his illegitimate children will at least be conceived deliberately.”

• Cote again: “NBC-TV had a three-hour Ken-tucky Derby preview show Saturday for a two-minute race. Unless the horses started talking, that strikes me as a bit excessive.”

When I first started hav-ing babies (some 14 years ago), many people told me to savour the moments and to make sure I enjoyed my chil-dren when they were young. They told me that time flies by so quickly. They also said that my children would be young for such a short time and that before my husband and I knew it, they would be slipping through our fingers.

Looking back now, I re-member the sleepless nights. I remember the aches and pains through pregnancy and the incredible joy that went along with a new baby. I remember the laundry, the diapers and the cuddles. I remember moments when I thought that time was going ever so slowly, times when I wondered if I would ever have another adult conver-

When wisdom speaks we should listensation or if making play dough was my new thing. I remember the days when simply getting out of my pyjamas was a success story. I remember being tired ... for a long time.

In saying all of that, I always remembered the words my more seasoned friends had said to me and they were, “savour the mo-ments”, “enjoy the time with your little ones, they are only young for such a short time.”

I’m so glad that through the tired fog, the mountains of laundry, the car seats, strollers and everything else, that I enjoyed the time. Indeed, there were hard times and occasionally I found myself wondering if the fog would ever lift. It was in those moments that my friends’ words echoed

in my mind, and I chose to savour the moment.

Today, as I dropped my children at school, I was once again reminded of the words my friends shared with me so early in their little lives. On the way to school, I listened intently to all that was happening in our car.

My eldest was busy oc-cupying herself as our very personal “Morning Drive DJ.” Her iPod was plugged into the car and we were treated to a wide array of her music. I was amazed as I listened to the depth of her creative choices.

My son, who was sit-ting confidently in the middle seat of the van, chatted with me about his

dream from the previous night. I loved the detail that accompanied his story and the way he was able to articulate even the smallest of details.

As I listened to my son, I looked in my rearview mirror and saw my young-est, seven-year-old Ella, perched on her seat. Ella has recently transitioned from her early readers to chapter books, which she is so proud of. This morning, she was captivated by her book. I could see her mind ticking away as she flipped the pages, gobbling up every word.

My heart was warmed by my experience in the car this morning. Our drive

to school was a moment I will remember forever. This moment was capped off beautifully when we finally arrived in front of the school doors. I put the car in park and as my children departed I watched my eldest (Sophia, 13) carry herself with ease and confidence towards the main doors. She was quickly followed by her younger brother, (Gabriel, 10) who was poised and ready for a day of learning and soaking up everything his teacher offered. Then, slowly and beautifully, my little Ella emerged from her perch in the back seat. Her chapter book neatly tucked into her bag and she was ready for the day. Before getting out of the car my lovely little girl gave me a kiss and said, “Mummy, I love you and I’ll miss you today.”

With that my heart skipped a beat and I replied with, “My darling girl, you are a lovely person and I will miss you today ...more than you will ever know.”

Out of the car she

hopped and I watched her walk into school, her little ponytail bouncing with ev-ery step. As I watched I realized that the words of my friends were indeed very wise.

My children, although still children, are growing so quickly and they truly have been young for such a short time. I’m glad I listened and savoured the moments with them.

I choose to continue to enjoy my time with them and may I remind you today, when wisdom speaks, it’s important that we listen. We need to listen because our lives tell a story and weaved through the story is the beauty of the moments we gather along the way.

An upgrade to the Bi-enfait fire department’s fleet is on the way.

The Town purchased a new fire truck on May 2, and is now awaiting its arrival in the coming weeks.

Bienfait adds new fire truck to its ranksDwight Thompson,

who is the president of the committee raise funds for the new truck and a member of the Bienfait town council, said the addition is impor-tant so that the local fire

department can continue to provide good service to the community.

The fundraising com-mittee was organized early last year and fundraising efforts started about a year

ago. So far they have raised $85,000. Thompson noted that they will continue to host fundraisers, as they seek to cover the final $20,000 to $30,000 cost of the truck. The town is deter-mined to pay for the truck entirely through donations.

Town council budgeted as much as $200,000 for the new purchase, so Thompson said they are “well below” their expected range, with the purchased one sitting at about $110,000.

Thompson said the new truck “will be great for our town and community.”

He also noted the fire department has two trucks already, and with the addi-tion of the third, he wasn’t sure if they would continue operating with all three vehicles or retire one of the older ones from service.

“Our trucks have been

outdated. They’re over 40 years old,” added Thomp-son.

The fire service was looking in various places for a used truck, from several provinces to some places in the United States. The truck they eventually bought was from south of the border, which is where Thompson said many used trucks come from for Canadian fire de-partments.

With fundraising ongo-ing, more initiatives can be

expected throughout the spring and summer, as the committee looks to cover the final purchase price.

Thompson said there was a lot of discussion be-tween council and the fire department in the last year as to what was really needed for the town.

He said, “They needed something they would be proud to have.”

Thompson is confident that’s what the department will receive.

DEAR DR. DONO-HUE: What is the difference between dementia and Al-zheimer’s disease? Are they the same? -- M.J.

ANSWER: “Dementia” is an encompassing word that includes many different conditions. Those conditions have some similar features that indicate an impairment or loss of important mental functions. The inability to re-tain new information, getting lost in familiar surroundings, difficulty choosing the proper words to express oneself, trouble doing simple arithme-tic like adding and subtract-ing, the failure to recognize close relatives and friends, and showing poor judgment like dressing for winter in the middle of summer are signs of dementia.

Alzheimer’s disease, Pick’s disease, vascular de-mentia (dementia due to many small strokes), demen-tia with Lewy bodies and frontotemporal dementia are but a few of the dementia ill-nesses. Each of these illnesses has special features that set it apart from the other dement-ing conditions.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common kind of dementia. People often use “dementia” when they mean “Alzheimer’s disease.” It’s best to give the exact name for the illness that is causing mental deterioration.

The booklet on Alzheim-er’s disease provides the signs and symptoms of this illness. Readers who would like a copy can obtain one by

***DEAR DR. DONO-

HUE: What has happened to the appendix? I never hear about appendicitis anymore. Has the operation gone out of fashion? Or is there some other way to deal with it? -- R.P.

ANSWER: The appen-dix is still where it always has been, dangling down from the first part of the colon on the lower right side. Long thought not to have any pur-pose, it does appear to add to immune defenses and seems to produce products useful for the development of the fetus. We do well without it, though.

Appendicitis has not gone out of fashion. It hap-pens with the same regularity it always has. The age group most likely to suffer from it is the group between 10 and 19. Around 250,000 appen-dectomies are done yearly in the United States.

Newer developments in the diagnosis of appendi-

citis include CT scans and ultrasound. Many surgeons now use a laparoscope to remove it. It’s a viewing instrument passed into the abdomen through a small incision. Instruments also are inserted through similar small incisions.

***DEAR DR. DONO-

HUE: I don’t think my problem will impress you, but here I go.

I refuse to wear a bathing suit in the summer because of all the spider veins on my legs, especially in the area of the ankles. How are they gotten rid of? I heard that tea bags work. Do they? -- E.L.

ANSWER: I’m not fa-miliar with tea bags for spider veins.

Other treatments do work well. Lasers can oblit-erate them. So can sclero-therapy. A doctor injects these tiny veins with a solution that causes them to wither and dry up.

I’m sure you won’t have trouble finding a doctor who does these procedures. If you do have trouble, ask your family doctor for a referral.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

FORD, Sask. - A former employee at a care home in west-central Saskatchewan has been ordered to stand trial.

Ashley Marie Johnson was a part-time care worker at a group home in North Bat-tleford that cares for people with intellectual and physical disabilities.

Mounties charged her with assault and of admin-istering a noxious substance.

Johnson was 24 at the time of the incident.

The person suffered non life-threatening inju-ries, though has since fully recovered.

The trial will be at the Court of Queen’s Bench in North Battleford; the dates have not yet been finalized.

nationalOTTAWA - Conserva-

tive MP James Bezan is hoping to make that pre-prom visit to the tanning salon a thing of the past for Canadian teens.

Just as the American media dissect the details of a New Jersey mother charged with bringing her five-year-old into a tanning booth, Bezan is pushing for age limits on the use of the devices.

Bezan’s private mem-ber’s bill would ban the use of tanning beds and booths for Canadians under the age of 18. It would also require warning signs to be posted in salons, and labels to be af-fixed to tanning equipment.

An unnaturally orange-

Tanning salons could be given age limitscoloured New Jersey woman was charged with child en-dangerment last week when she allegedly brought her 5-year-old daughter into a tanning booth, a story that has gone viral internation-ally.

***OTTAWA - The federal

government is on the hook for billions of dollars to fix problems caused by lax environmental regulation in the past, the environment auditor says in a new report.

The government is look-ing at $7.7 billion in cleanup costs for contaminated sites, but has only set aside a frac-tion of the necessary funding, the auditor found.

As the government re-forms the environmental as-sessment process, it’s worth remembering the high price of slipshod environmental oversight from previous decades, Environment Com-missioner Scott Vaughan said at a news conference.

Most of the contaminat-ed sites date back to between 1940 and 1970, well before environmental regulations cracked down on resource extraction and development, Vaughan said.

***HALIFAX - The case

of a Halifax navy intelli-gence officer accused in a case of espionage has been adjourned until next month.

Sub-Lt. Jeffrey Delisle is charged with communicat-ing information to a foreign entity that could harm na-tional interests.

His lawyer, Mike Tay-lor, told provincial court

he hasn’t received full dis-closure and the case was adjourned until June 13.

Delisle was denied bail during his last court appear-ance in March, and he has been in custody at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility since his arrest in January.

internationalPRETORIA, South Af-

rica - South Africa should investigate whether officials in neighbouring Zimbabwe are responsible for human rights abuses there, a judge said Tuesday in an order that has grave political and practical implications.

The ruling handed down in a Pretoria court Tuesday by Judge Hans Fabricius was the first under South African statutes spelling out its international law obliga-tions. Human rights lawyer Nicole Fritz, whose South African Litigation Centre joined the Zimbabwean Ex-iles forum to bring the suit, said human rights groups have documented cases of torture and other crimes in Zimbabwe.

Under Tuesday’s order, she said, investigators from a country with a strong legal framework now will be able to hold Zimbabwean offi-cials responsible for crimes allegedly committed dur-ing that country’s political meltdown.

***GENEVA - World

powers share a “profound concern” that Syria could descend into civil war, international envoy Kofi

Annan said Tuesday, but nations remain committed to his six-point peace plan and have pledged to deploy 300 cease-fire monitors there by the end of the month.

He warned, however, that the world can’t wait

forever for the cease-fire plan to work, and noted that the bloodshed hasn’t ended despite the truce.

Annan, who has been tasked by the United Na-tions and the Arab League with devising a solution to

end Syrian President Bashar Assad’s brutal crackdown on a popular uprising, spoke to reporters in Geneva after briefing a closed-door ses-sion of the U.N. Security Council in New York by videoconference.

Protect Your MelonThe Saskatchewan Construction Safety Association hosted a session for local workers regarding safety on the job, particularly for eye and head con-cerns. Greg Schreiner, of the SCSA, holds up a watermelon after a crowbar was dropped on it, simulating what would happen to a human head.

Q: I have a “tire” ash-tray that I think is probably from the 1930s. Are these collectible? -- Carl, Day-ton, Ohio

A: Most of the “tire” ashtrays that I’ve seen be-ing offered for sale were originally given away as premiums by service sta-tions, tire manufacturers and garages. The earliest styles were crafted of glass circled by a miniature rubber tire. On the tire is embossed the name of the company. Ashtrays of this type produced before about 1950 are especially col-lectible. Typical prices are Goodrich Double Eagle, $125; Firestone Deluxe Champion, $45; Zenith, $40; and Jetzon, $20. As with most collectibles, condition is extremely im-portant. For non-smokers, some of the ashtrays were issued that featured a pin tray.

***Q: My mom collected

Avon bottles, and I have inherited them. I know nothing about Avon and current values. Can you help me? -- Susan, Stigler, Okla.

A: The California Perfume Company was founded in 1886 and the

“Tire” ashtray

Avon line was not intro-duced until about 40 years later. Collecting the earlier items is still competitive, but ones issued after about 1960 have little or no value to serious enthusiasts. After monitoring eBay for several days, I still believe that the Avon market has softened. There are sev-eral guidebooks available at amazon.com, but you should take the prices listed in them with some caution. For example, one guide lists a Nile Blue Bath Urn for $15, but it actually sells for about $5.

***Q: I have a reverse

painting on glass identifi ed as “Scene in Scotland.” Any information you can give me would be appreci-ated. -- Barbara, Sun City, Ariz.

A: Such paintings were especially popular during the early 20th cen-tury. They were painted by a variety of artists; some signed their work, and others did not. Paint-ings on glass of this type generally sell in the $50 to

$100 range depending on subject matter, condition and desirability.

***Q: I have a sheet of 29-

cent stamps honoring Elvis Presley. Are they valuable or should I use them? -- Theresa, Nashua, N.H.

A: I spoke to sev-eral stamp collectors, who seem to agree that they are only worth face value. My advice would be to use them.

Murray has been given an opportunity rarely offered to a draft prospect — the chance to play at the IIHF World Hockey Champion-ship.

A Canadian team be-set by injuries added the 18-year-old defenceman to its roster just hours before opening the tournament against Slovakia on Friday.

Murray had originally come to Europe as an extra body for training camp and a pair of exhibition games against Switzerland, but found himself in the right place at the right time.

With P.K. Subban get-ting sent home after suffer-ing a knee injury and Marc Methot nursing a minor groin issue, Canada had just five healthy blue-liners for its first tournament game. That prompted gen-eral manager Kevin Lowe to officially add Murray to his roster and coach Brent Sutter decided to play him alongside Duncan Keith.

***MONTREAL - Bolo-

gna striker Marco Di Vaio is considering a move to Montreal that would make him the Impact’s first des-ignated player.

Di Vaio told a news conference in Italy that he would not return to his Ital-

ian Serie A club for 2013, and that Montreal’s Major League Soccer expansion team was an interesting.

Montreal’s technical director Nick De Santis said there’s an offer on the table for the 35-year-old player, who plans to visit the city with his family at the end of May.

iNterNatioNalMIAMI - The Miami

Dolphins have extend-ed linebacker Cameron Wake’s contract through the 2016 season.

Wake made the Pro Bowl in 2010, when he had 14 sacks, and he had 8 1/2 sacks last year. He came to the Dolphins in 2009 from the B.C. Lions, where he was a two-time CFL defensive player of the year.

Wake had one year and US$650,000 left on his previous contract. ESPN reported the extension was worth $49 million, with $20 million guaranteed.

“It’s kind of like tak-ing things to another level, kind of like when I came down here from the CFL,” Wake said Sunday. “It has been an amazing, amazing journey.”

Wake has yet to play in the post-season but said he’s optimistic about the direction of the Dolphins

under new coach Joe Philbin.

***WASHINGTON - The

judge in the Roger Clemens perjury trial said jurors were getting bored with the pace of the case and told both sides Tuesday to stop wasting time with un-necessary questions.

“Those folk are fed up they because see their time being wasted!” U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton scolded the defence and government lawyers, before the jury entered the room Tuesday morning.

Walton said a juror asked his law clerk if the judge would advise what the charges are because some of jurors are “far afield” from what the actual charges are.

While expressing con-cern about jurors possibly discussing the case prema-turely, Walton also said he had sympathy for the jury.

“When you create a boring environment which is being created in this case,” Walton said, that will cause jurors to talk about the case “cause they’re bored!”

Clemens, a seven-time winner of baseball’s Cy Young Award, is accused of lying to Congress when he denied using steroids and human growth hormone.

Mother's Day gifts that new moms will love(NC)—Mother's Day

is here, providing you with the perfect opportunity to honor that special new mom in your life. Here are some unique gift ideas that she'll love.

Food Delivery ServiceNews moms are over-

loaded with tasks and re-sponsibilities—and, of course, they're sleep de-prived. In between getting to know and caring for

their baby, new mothers have zero time to actually prepare a healthy meal for themselves. Why not get them a gift certificate from a local food delivery service? These delicious meals are healthy, balanced, perfectly portioned and delivered right to her front door.

Post-partum DoulaNever heard of one?

Post-partum doulas step in after the birth of the baby to

help take care of mom and help out around the house, so mom can bond with the baby. There are qualified post-partum doulas in ev-ery city – just Google or ask for a recommendation from friends, colleagues, a local hospital or a parenting group. Doulas are available to help during the day or overnight (overnight doulas typically charge a higher hourly fee), and they can stay as long as they are

needed – from a few days to many months.

Make memoriesDitch the flowers, forgo

the diamonds and leave the breakfast in bed to the children. This is the year for gadgets. There are a ton of cameras available today that'll capture every fleeting moment of motherhood. Most are child-friendly, which means that you can hand these to the kids and

not worry about sand or dust. Or even a dunk in the pool.

Gifts that gives backMake this Mother's Day

unforgettable with a gift that keeps on giving. Consider making a donation to her favourite charity of choice or purchase a gift through a local organization like the Christian Children's Fund of Canada (www.ccfcanada.ca) and help provide expect-ant moms and babies in

some of the poorest regions in the world with essen-tials like prenatal vitamins, check-ups, and post-natal care and education.

(NC)—Racing off to swimming lessons and soccer practices. Picking up groceries and making sure kids are fed. Tackling a laundry mountain. Tak-ing kids to their doctor's appointments—and of course those birthday pres-ents that need to be bought and wrapped on time. Does this sound familiar? Most moms have a never-ending

list of to-dos, which they bravely soldier through every day to ensure their family is happy, healthy and well taken care of.

But is she taking care of herself too? If not, her kids can change that this Mother's Day.

“Heart disease and stroke is the number one killer of women in Canada—more than all

cancers combined,” says Bobbe Wood, president of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. “A mother is so used to putting her family's needs first, often ignoring her own warning signs and putting herself at risk for heart disease and stroke. That's why our awareness campaign—The Heart Truth—is so important.”

All women need to make their own health a priority as heart disease and stroke take too many women before their time. By carving out time to exercise and de-stress, and to manage their blood pressure and cholesterol levels by eating healthy, moms can protect their heart health.

This Mother's Day, kids can do their part so she can take care of her own heart health. Small gestures and helping out with some daily chores can go a long way to freeing

up mom's time. Here are some ideas to get started:

• Making breakfast in bed and then clearing up afterwards

on course, allow them to choose the tasks they would like to help out with. If children get in the habit

of helping out a little bit more every day, these small gestures will mean more time for their mother to add exercise and relaxation into her day and protect her heart health.

Kids can download a Mother's Day e-card with a personalized message and heart health information at thehearttruth.ca. The site includes prevention tips, signs and symptoms, recipes and questions to ask her doctor. Awareness of her heart health may be the best gift you could give this Mother's Day.

• “Keep frosting look-ing glossy -- with your hair dryer. Before guests come over, give the whole cake a once over holding the hair dryer about 7-10 inches away from the frosting and set on high. It will soften the frosting, giving the cake a

just-made look.” -- R.L. in California

• Remove hard-water stains and mineral deposits from your showerhead with this trick: Fill a zip-lock baggie halfway with warm vinegar. Immerse your showerhead in the baggie and secure it to the pipe with a rubber band. Let it hang for an hour or so, then release the bag and scrub the showerhead with a soft toothbrush.

• “There are so many

different ways to pay bills these days that it can be hard to keep track of those that need to be mailed. Here’s a great way to remember when to pay a bill so that it always gets there on time: I used to write the due dates of my bills on my calendar. Now I write the pay-by date for each bill instead. For bills that go in the mail, I write a date on the calendar that’s a week ahead of when it is due. For bills that are paid online,

I write a date three days ahead of the due date, and for automatic payments, I deduct the money from the paycheck BEFORE the draft is made. Now I never miss a due date.” -- T.F. in Indiana

• You might not have a blackboard in your home, but keep a clean blackboard eraser around to get streaks off of freshly cleaned win-dows. It works really well in the car, too!

• Change your air filter

to save money this summer. Be sure to change it once a month to keep your air conditioner working at its most efficient.

“She loves me, she loves me not,” the kids chant in a chorus around a little patch of daisies blooming on our boule-vard. Tugging flower petals one by one, their smiling young faces announce in a most traditional way that spring has sprung.

Join your kids dur-ing this beautiful season and take a closer look at the flowers in your yard, neighborhood park or in the vase on your kitchen table. Discover the interesting shapes of the petals that one by one compose a unique bloom. Then let your ob-

servations inspire you to make a bouquet of everlast-ing flowers from the most unusual of materials: wire and inexpensive, colorful knee-high stockings!

Here are the materials for a flower with four or five petals:

A rol l of 16- or 18-gauge wire

ScissorsFloral tape or green

electrical tapeVase or flowerpot with

florist foam insideFloral moss (optional)

Here’s the fun:1. Shape and twist the

wire in a loop to form an outline of a petal that is about 1 inch in diameter. Think of it as the “frame”

of the petal. Do not cut the wire at the base of the loop, but rather twist and turn the wire to form another similar-size petal next to the first until you have four or five petals. Do not cut off the wire.

2. Cut off the toe and the elastic end of a pair of sheer knee-highs. Stretch the stocking over a wire petal, then twist it in place at the base, stretch it a bit more, and then twist again. Wrap the wire around the base to fasten the stocking in place. Cut off excess stocking below the petal. Continue with each petal. This can be a two-person project. Your child can stretch the stocking over the petal while you do the twisting.

3. Cut the wire, al-lowing for a stem. Give the stem a nice finished

look with floral or green electrical tape. Arrange in a flowerpot with floral moss or in a vase.

Tips: Glue miniature butterflies or bugs to the flowers, or add details with fabric paints in squeeze bottles.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Q: I’d like to hire a con-tractor to make some repairs to my garage, but I hear a lot of stories these days about handymen who overcharge, don’t do the work promised or otherwise cheat custom-ers. How can I make sure I get what I pay for? -- Clar-ence T., Philadelphia

A: There are several things you can do to make sure a contractor is legiti-mate, that the work will be done on time and to your satisfaction, and that un-pleasant surprises won’t crop up later. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

--Take your time de-ciding: Unless the repair is an emergency, you have the luxury of getting more than one estimate from more than one contractor. Get at least three quotes before

deciding.--Check with the Better

Business Bureau to see if any complaints were lodged against the contractor and how the contractor respond-ed to those complaints.

--Ask the contractor if you can contact past custom-ers about his work.

--Ask for the contrac-tor’s license, as well as proof of workers compensation insurance.

--Get everything in writing: A statement of when the work will begin and end, how much materials will cost and what materials will be used, how much labor is involved and what that will cost, whether permits will be required, and whether the work must meet build-ing codes.

--Do not allow work to begin until you have signed a contract you both agree on.

--Never pay in advance, and do not pay in cash: write a check or use a credit card instead.

--Insist on inspecting all work yourself (or have

a representative inspect it for you) before providing the final payment.

If a problem crops up during or after the repair job, try to resolve the issue with the contractor first. Reputable contractors will try to make it right. If you can’t resolve the problem or can’t find the contractor, you can lodge a complaint with the BBB or contact your state or city’s consumer protection department.

HOME TIP: Word of mouth is still the best way to find a good contractor. Ask neighbors, family and friends if there’s a contractor they can recommend.

Send your questions, comments and tips to [email protected], or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.
