Fellow Sister and Brother Elks,

The “summer slowdown” has arrived; less traffic, more humidity, no restaurant reservations required, higher temps to deal with. These are signs that summer is here in Vero Beach.

But WE at the Vero Beach Elks Lodge have found a way to beat the “off sea-son” doldrums. It’s called a cool staff of dedicated people who are bringing you the members, a great schedule of sum-mer food, fun, entertainment and games. Thanks to our House Chair, House Man-ager, and House Committee for all their efforts in making our lodge the place to be for the “summer slowdown.”

Very recently (May 2 - May 6, 2016), our lodge was audited by the IRS. This trying event went on for 5 full days and was in-depth. The audit covered the 2014-2015 fiscal year (4/1-3/31). They also had a “look back” year of 2013-2014, which we had to provide information for. We have no results as of this writing. News from Kids of Character

Hi Everyone: Time for an update on what is going on in the Secretary’s office. Our membership numbers have gone down since our increase in dues. That’s unfortunate since the increase was only $4.00 per month. We now have 880 members with 16 candidates awaiting orientation and initiation. Our members do a great job in proposing candidates. Thank you for that. Our Second Request for dues notices went out a few weeks ago and some delinquent members have paid. Unfortunately, we still have 215 members who have not paid. Our payments to Grand Lodge and Florida State Elks were due and paid. We have to pay them for ALL members whether the member is paid or not. So please consider this and help us out by remitting your dues as soon as possible. For those of you who

have not paid, please see below and what your $$s pay for.If there is anyone that did not receive their renewal/dues notice please contact me at [email protected] or 772 569 1774. Also, please notify me of any change in your address. We are hoping for a fun filled and successful 2016/2017 at our Lodge. Come join us.

School is out for summer. But our Impact Grant Manager, Michele Klager is still on the job.

Volunteers are needed to help staff the store from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM for next school year

Lodge Event HotlineThe House Committee launched this service in April to provide a means for those members who may not have access to email or internet service, as well as the general public, to be informed about the events happening at the Lodge on a weekly basis.

Facebook Manager, Brenda Barrett, records a message that is usually

less than four minutes long. Just one little quirk in the system we discovered: when dialing from a landline you must use the 772 area code (10 digit dialing).

The service is available 24/7!

Just call (772) 800-2900 and stay up-to-date on all

the lodge events.

Mrs. John B. Dodd of Washington first proposed the idea of a “Father’s Day” in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. William Smart, a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife (Mrs. Dodd’s mother) died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington. It was after Mrs. Dodd became an adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent.

The first Father’s Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, WA. At about the same time in various towns and cities across America other people were

beginning to celebrate a “Father’s Day.” In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father’s Day. Finally in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day.

Father’s Day has become a day to not only honor your father but all men who act as a father figure. Stepfathers, uncles, grandfathers, and adult male friends are all to be honored on Father’s Day.

Father’s Day (Reprinted from the Encyclopedia of Elkdom)

My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me. - Jim Valvano

The Vero Beach Elks Lodge #1774 granted a $1,000 scholarship to Katherine Kolb who will be attending the University of Florida in August. Our gator alum members will be happy about that!

She had a 4.44 grade point average, ranking 58 in a class of 681. She was in the National Honor Society for her 10th, 11th and 12th years. In addition, she was in the National Honor Society of Vero Beach Senior Society and National Honor Society of High School Scholars. Shown with Katherine is June Maher, PER, who presented the award.

Our scholarship fund is raised from the November Lobster Fest and we’re always grateful for the people that come out to support us... Plus have a great time too.

This year’s event will be on Saturday, November 5th. We hope to see you there.

This July, Vero Beach Lodge 1774 will be sending 50 deserving chil-dren, 9 through 13, from area schools to the award winning, 405 acre, Florida Youth Elks Camp in Umatilla, FL.

This wonderful camp is accredited through the American Camp As-sociation, provides a 2 to 7 staff to camper ratio and maintains a dedicated infirmary staffed with reg-istered nurses.

In order to make this happen, we need to raise $3,500 to pay for the charter bus and snacks for the chil-dren during the trip up and back.

We are holding a fundraiser on July

10th - “Pasta with a Purpose” - in support of this worthwhile effort.

Sponsored by Carrabba’s, the event promises to be a crowd pleaser with a lounge full of “Italian-themed, min-ute-to-win it” games where contest-ants can win tickets for the Chinese Raffle Bags.

Don’t miss this exciting event. Come on out, have some fun, enjoy some great food, and support our Youth Camp Program and Capital Improve-ment Fund.

Sponsorships and donation now be-ing accepting. More details on spon-sorships can be found on Page 12.

Every Spring, we ask our generous members to pitch in and help us spruce up the lodge property outside. And every Spring, you come through!

With smiling faces and lots of enthusi-asm, several members rolled up their sleeves and went to work.

The result? A beautiful facility for you to enjoy dining, dancing and other fun events.

Thank you to all of you that helped! We appreciate your hard work. You make us look good.

The Meaning of Membership

An Elk is an American citizen who guides his/her course in life by the cardinal principles of our order: Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity!

Our programs recognize a belief in God; help children grow up healthy and drug-free; quicken the spirit of American patriotism; honor the service and sacrifice of our veterans; address unmet needs; serve our communities through benevolent programs; and cultivate good fellowship.

Planning a wedding? A Reunion? A Holiday Party? An Anniversary? A Banquet? A Shower? A Special Celebration? A Company Meeting or Party? Or other event?

Always a favorite, the Elks Races were held prior to the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. Among the revellers this year were Charlie Wilson, Bob Bergan, and Marlene Putnam pictured below.

New Electronic Lodge Bulletin BoardSubmitted by Jim Rannazzisi

To all of our event and dinner volunteers...Thank You!We couldn’t do it without you.

Florida Elks Online EncyclopediaThe Florida Elks Online Encyclopedia now has Google-like search capability!

Type a word or topic in the search box and all entries that refer to it will be pulled up for you to read. This is useful for anyone wanting to know more about an Elk topic and is especially helpful to bulletin editors, officers, District Vice Presidents, and District Deputies.

Find it at: http://floridaelks.org/encyclopedia-of-elkdom

For those members who can’t get to the Lodge often or may have missed some of the flyers and notices posted there, we’ve created an Electronic Bulletin Board. We just launched the board last month so it’s not quite a finished product.

You may access the Bulletin Board from the main menu of the Lodge Web Site veroelks.com or board.veroelks.com.

We welcome any ideas for additional information to be posted there. Send your ideas or information to be posted to [email protected] or use the Com-ments or Suggestions form on the Bulletin Board.
