First Reading Bar 5:1-9 A reading from the prophet Baruch
Jerusalem, take off your dress of sorrow and distress, put on the beauty of the glory of God for ever, wrap the cloak of the integrity of God around you, put the diadem of the glory of the Eter-nal on your head: since God means to show your splendour to every nation under heaven,
since the name God gives you for ever will be, ‘Peace through integrity, and honour through de-votedness’. Arise, Jerusalem, stand on the heights and turn your eyes to the east: see your sons reassembled from west and east at the command of the Holy One, jubilant that God has re-membered them. Though they left you on foot, with enemies for an escort, now God brings them back to you like royal princes carried back in glory. For God has decreed the flattening
of each high mountain, of the everlasting hills, the filling of the valleys to make the ground level
so that Israel can walk in safety under the glory of God. And the forests and every fragrant tree will provide shade for Israel at the command of God; for God will guide Israel in joy by the light of his glory with his mercy and integrity for escort. The Word of the Lord
Responsorial Psalm Ps 125. R. v.3
(R.) The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.
1. When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs. (R.)
2. The heathens themselves said: ‘What marvels the Lord worked for them!’ What marvels the Lord worked for us! Indeed we were glad. (R.)
3. Deliver us, O Lord, from our bondage as streams in dry land. Those who are sowing in tears
will sing when they reap. (R.)
4. They go out, they go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing: they come back, they come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves. (R.)
Second Reading Phil 1:3-6. 8-11 A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Philippians
Every time I pray for all of you, I pray with joy, remembering how you have helped to spread the Good News from the day you first heard it right up to the present. I am quite certain that the One who began this good work in you will see that it is finished when the Day of Christ Jesus
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION “The Master is here and wants to see you” (John 11:28)
The Adoration is on each Friday from 10.00am-10pm in Church. PRAYER MOVES MOUNTAIN. OUR PARISH NEEDS MORE

comes. God knows how much I miss you all, loving you as Christ Jesus loves you. My prayer is that your love for each other may increase more and more and never stop improving your knowledge and deepening your perception so that you can always recognise what is best. This will help you to become pure and blameless, and prepare you for the Day of Christ, when you will reach the perfect goodness which Jesus Christ produces in us for the glory and praise of God. The Word of the Lord
Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia! Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths: all people shall see the salvation of God. Alleluia!
Gospel Lk 3:1-6 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke
In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar’s reign, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Her-od tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of the lands of Ituraea and Trachonitis, Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, during the pontificate of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah, in the wilderness. He went through the whole Jordan district proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the sayings of the prophet Isaiah: A voice cries in the wilderness; Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley will be filled in, every mountain and hill be laid low, winding ways will be straightened and rough roads made smooth. And all mankind shall see the salvation of God.
The Gospel of the Lord
Communion Antiphon

THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!
Sincere thanks to all Parishioners and visitors who have supported our functions and events this year, especially your generosity towards our special Christmas Raffle. It is with great joy we will offer our cheque to the Morning-ton Conference of St Vincent de Paul Society.
The winner was a young uncle of a baby being baptised. We all enjoyed his happy reaction—”I’ve never won anything before, this is great. I will share it with my mum”. May we convey our thanks to the wonderful Parish Secretar-
ies, Max Fletcher and Wally Sharman for their constant support and assistance. The mem-bers of the Social Group wish Fr Joe, Fr Joel and all our St Macartan’s Parishioners every
blessing of the coming Christmas season and a very healthy and happy New Year.

Social Justice for Refugees Petition As Catholics we surely have a duty to ensure people receive Social Justice and are treated fairly. To this end could Parishioners please read the Petition pre-pared by the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project (BASP). Then hopefully sign the Petition. Ask yourself the question. How can we value some lives so much and appear to judge others as mere expendables? Copies of Petition in both foyers. Thank you in advance for your support
St Macartan’s and our Deanery East Timor Project
Our relationship with the parish of Don Bosco, Laga, is thriving, in fact, it is so successful that it is overwhelming! Last Easter we sent a container where those two life-size statues were the highlight; another container is now on the way. A third container is full and waiting here. A fourth container is already three-quarters full! In all containers the emphasis is on the needs of the children for education. So this year we have sent more than 400 school chairs and desks - and still there are classrooms with no furniture!! In addition, there are thirteen requests for a village school to be rebuilt or renovated and an additional request for a lower secondary tech-nical school. The need is never-ending. It costs around $8,000 to buy and send a contain-er. Almost all items in a container are donated, but some building items have to be bought, ei-ther here or there. Parishioners will have noted that we have not had an Advent collection of items for mothers and babies this Christmas. Instead, Fr Joe has permitted us to hold a major appeal for funds on the first weekend of the New Year. Please put aside a cash Christmas pre-sent for the education of children in East Timor. Be assured the needs of infants and mothers are not ignored. There is an unofficial, informal group of wonderfully generous
parishioners who put all their 5 cent, and even 10 cent, coins in a jar for ‘the babies and moth-ers’ in East Timor. Each year we send a donation of $2,000 to Maria Auxiliadora Clinic, Venilale, where it is used to purchase medicines. This clinic, run by one doctor/sister and a small group of sisters, sees around 8,000 clients per year, with an emphasis on babies, new mothers and the elderly. This clinic is often the only one in Venilale where any medicines are available. Could you manage to join the coin-savers? Labelled jars, bags, tins can be left in the parish office, put in a collection basket or entrusted to me.
Best wishes for a holy and peaceful season. Chris Smyth
