Siemens designs, develops, and tests circuit breaker operators andinterrupters at its circuit breaker Center ofCompetence in Berlin, Germany. Design(type) short-circuit tests are performed atindependent power test laboratories.Design control of the operating mechanismis maintained from Berlin to assure thatcircuit breakers assembled at any of theregional manufacturing centers will meet theperformance requirements of the design.
Operator:The 3AH3 circuit breaker operator is adurable and reliable stored-energymechanism. This operator will performup to 10,000 operations before overhaul, and the basic operator has a MTBF of8,700 years (as of 2004).

3AH3 Stored-Energy Operating Mechanism
The SDV6 outdoor distribution circuitbreaker utilizes the 3AH3 stored-energyoperating mechanism. The 3AH3 is thelatest member of the 3A operator family, ofwhich over 350,000 units are in serviceworldwide in vacuum circuit breakers. Over 60,000 3AH3 operators are in service.
The 3AH3 operator builds on the vastexperience with the 3A family ofoperating mechanisms. Improvements inthe operator have been incorporated toimprove service life and simplifymaintenance. Newer lubricants andalternative bearing materials have beenselected to reduce the chance forinteraction between the lubricants andthe metals to assure long service life.Mounting provisions for devices, such asthe opening latch, closing latch, andsimilar items, are designed for one person
removal and installation, even though it isunlikely that the user will ever need to doso. Reusable spring clips are used forpivot pins, avoiding the need for specialremoval tools or a supply of specialpurpose retainers during maintenance.
An option for faster opening time for theoperator has been incorporated, whichdecreases interrupting time from thestandard 5-cycle (83ms) interrupting timeto an optional 3-cycle (50ms) interruptingtime. This option is only available if thetripping power supply voltage is 48Vdc,125Vdc, 250Vdc, or capacitor trip.
The 3AH3 operator is a true stored-energyoperating mechanism. Closing springs arecharged electrically immediately followinga closing operation, and the openingspring is charged by the rotation of thecircuit breaker main shaft during theclosing operation.
The spring charging mechanism is a gear-drive design. Compared to a ratchet-and-pawl mechanism, the 3AH3 operator isquieter and exhibits longer mechanical life. The estimated total mechanical enduranceof the operator is 60,000 operations withoverhaul and vacuum interrupterreplacement at 10,000 operations.
The recommended maintenance intervalfor the operating mechanism is 5 years or10,000 operations, whichever occursfirst, when used in the ANSI/IEEE Òusualservice conditionsÓ.
The entire SDV6 family, from 15.5kVthrough 38kV, uses the same basic type3AH3 operating mechanism. Theoperators differ only in elements relatedto the design voltage or interruptingrating of the circuit breaker. Thecomponents which differ according torating include: the main rotating shaft, contact pressure springs, closing spring, opening spring, and pushrods, as well asthe high voltage elements, such as:interrupter, standoff insulators, andsimilar items.

VacuumInterrupters
At the heart of the medium voltagecircuit breaker are the vacuuminterrupters. Siemens vacuuminterrupters use chrome-copper contactmaterial, which keeps the choppingcurrent to 5 amperes or less and therebykeeps overvoltages to a minimum.
For 15.5kV and 27.6kV circuit breakers upto 25kA, radial magnetic field contactsare used to force high current (>10kA)arcs to rotate rapidly around the contactsurfaces to reduce contact erosion.
For 15.5kV 31.5kA and 40kA and all 38kVcircuit breakers, axial magnetic fieldcontacts are used, which force the arc toremain diffused, thus preventing excesscontact erosion.
The Siemens interrupter will interrupt upto 100 full rated faults (depending onrating) before replacement is necessary. An external contact-wear indicator isprovided to directly determine the wearof the contacts within the interrupter.

Value t3, time to voltage uc, is approximately 1/1.138 times the T2 value in ANSI C37.06-2000.3 First value is for standard 83ms / 5-cycle interrupting time. Second value is for optional 50ms/3-cycle interrupting time. See note 1.4 First value is full-wave impulse withstand circuit breaker open or closed. Second value is chopped-wave impulse withstand, applicable only with circuit
breaker closed.
