description

The presentation of Simon Milledge, a principal researcher with IIED's Natural Resources Group, to the IIED-hosted Moving ahead with Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) workshop on 9-10 April 2014. The presentation was made in the sixth session on exploring synergies between REDD+ and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and focused on what formulation of forest-based SDGs, targets and indicators might best complement REDD+. DOCUMENT TITLE 4

Simon Milledge10 April 2014Why forests in SDGs?

• Healthy and productive natural systems as foundation for sustainable development

• Reliance of economies and livelihoods on ecosystem goods and services

public and private goods, innovation and resilience

• From a pro-poor perspective, heavy reliance of poorer and marginalised people on common property resources

Simon Milledge10 April 2014Lessons from MDGs

• Respect ecological limits as will otherwise undermine gains made in other goal areas

• Restore forest ecosystem health given the damage already done

• Optimise the contribution of forests to economic progress and assets for the poor

• Models that reduce inequalities and risks• Incorporating externalities• Improving enabling conditions• Changing norms, behaviours and attitudes• Investing in resilience
