The‘SustainableEnergyforAll’(SE4All)initiativewaslaunchedbytheUnitedNationsin2011,aimingforuniversalaccesstomodernenergyservicesby2030.Hundredsofmillionsworldwidestilllackelectricity.TheSustainableEngineeringLabhas years of experience and an innovative, inexpensive, and highly practical mix of tools to help with geospatialelectrificationplanningforincreasedaccess.SELalsohasmorethantenyearsoffieldworkandprojectimplementationexperienceintheareasofdevelopmentplanningandgeo-spatialdatagathering inmanycountries inAfrica,SoutheastAsia, theSouthPacificandLatinAmericaandtheCaribbean(LAC).TheSELteamprovidestraininginmanytechnicalaspectsofgeo-spatialdatagatheringandmanagement,includinggridandsocialinfrastructuremapping,algorithmicmodeling.TheSELteamalsohasexperienceimplementingandmanaginginnovativesmartsolarmicro-grids.
Ourapproachhasseveralstrengths:
• Toolsandtechniquesfordatagatheringandmanagement.Ourtoolshavebeenusedforcapturingdatainthefieldforelectricgridlines,transformersandotherequipment,aswellasvillages,households,schoolsandclinicsandothersocialinfrastructure.Thisapproachiscost-effective,buildscapacitylocally,andensuresthatdatasetscanbeupdatedinanongoingfashionasprogramsareimplemtented.
Gridlineandequipmentmapping(Nigeria)
• Adecisionsupporttoolforelectrificationplanning.Thetoolcanhelptoselectelectrificationtechnologies(grid,
mini-grid,homesystems);estimatecostsatlocalandaggregatelevels;addressknowledgegaps;andprioritizeandplaninvestmentsforuniversalelectricityaccess. Thisofferselectricutilities,energyministries,andgovernmentplanners,aswellasinternationaldonors,developmentpartners,lendersandtheprivatesector,avaluableplanningframework for electrification planning. The outputs allow project implementers to integrate, sequence, andgeographically and temporally target investments in a manner that achieves more efficient and effectiveelectrification.

• Supportsoff-gridandminigridplanning.Ourapproachedhasbeenusedtoplanelectrificationforoff-gridsystemsawaitinggridconnectivity,forruralareas,aswellasforisolatedandhard-to-reachpopulations.

• Digitalfieldsurveying.qSELhasbeenaleaderintheuseofinnovative,digitalsurveyingtoolsandplatformstohelpimprovethespeedandefficiencyofdatagatheringprogramsaspartoftheshiftawayfrompaper-basedsurveying.The approachhelps planners to combine geo-locateddemands (residential, social infrastructure), data for griddistributioninfrastructure(MVlinesandtransformers),aswellasothergeographicinformation(renewableenergyresources,environmentallyprotectedareas).
