Permanent water saving rules are a set of common sense rules to ensure we use water efficiently and allow flexibility in when and how we use water. They are designed to ensure customers use water sensibly and avoid waste. VEHICLES Can be cleaned at any time with: a hand held hose that is leak free and fitted with a trigger nozzle a bucket. GARDENS AND LAWNS Only water a residential garden or lawn using: a hand held hose, bucket or watering can at any time a watering system between the hours of 6pm-10am on any day. HAND HELD HOSE Water using a hand held hose only if it is fitted with a trigger nozzle and is leak free. FOUNTAINS AND WATER FEATURES Water can be used in a fountain or a water feature if the fountain or water feature recirculates the water. HARD SURFACES Water can be used to clean driveways, paths, concrete, tiles and timber decking only if: cleaning is required as a result of an accident, fire, health hazard, safety hazard or other emergency staining to the surface has developed and then only once a season due to construction or renovation, and then only using a high pressure water cleaning device or a hand held hose or bucket. WHEN DO THE RULES TAKE EFFECT? These Permanent Water Saving Rules took effect on 16 December 2011. WHAT IS MEANT BY A WATERING SYSTEM? A watering system is: an automatic watering system that is set to turn on and off automatically, at predetermined times, without human intervention and, in the case of use for a public lawn or garden or playing surface, is also fitted with a rain or soil moisture sensor an automatic watering system, operated manually, rather than automatically a manual watering system.
