Lonnie Messick Special Teams Coordinator / Linebackers Phone: (605) 355‐3025 Email: [email protected]
After the 2004 season coaching the linebackers and leading tackler at Kent State University, defensive coach Messick was called to duty to train a military unit in Belgium, Congo. After six months extended duty he came back to coaching as Special Teams Coordinator here at the South Dakota Mines. Coach Kratzer says he is glad to be an addition to our staff, and he will bring the type of discipline, intensity and long term commitment that our players here so deserve.
His coaching stops include Kent State, Hargrave Military Academy, Marine Military Academy, Naval Academy and Bowie State University.
In addition, Messick has coached numerous interservice teams at U.S. Marine Corps bases, including Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (1977‐79); Camp Pendelton, California (1981‐82); and Parris Island, South Carolina (1983‐84). He retired from the Marine Corps in 1997 as a Lieutenant Colonel following 28 years of service. Messick graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in education. He and his wife Virginia reside in Rapid City. Their family includes daughter Jessica, son Scott and his wife Deirdre, twins Jake and Matt, and daughter Caroline.
Charlie Giangrosso Defensive Coordinator/ Strength Coach Phone: (605) 394‐2604 Email: [email protected] Giangrosso, originally from Wichita, Kan., has a wealth of knowledge about the game, bringing 20‐plus years experience mostly coaching at the college level. He most recently served a three‐year stint at NCAA Div. III Bethany College in West Virginia.
“I was the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator,” Giangrosso said. “I’ve done both sides of the ball, but been mostly on the defensive (during career).”
In his duties at SD Mines Giangrosso will be doing some recruiting. His area includes northern Wyoming, eastern Montana and western North Dakota.
Being a veteran coach, Giangrosso will bring a few new wrinkles to an already solid Hardrocker defense. On the grand scale, however, he wants to keep things a little simpler, using his philosophy: “you get out what you put in.”
“I want these kids to come in and understand that if you play hard, you work hard and do things like that – you’re successful,” Giangrosso said. “One of our (team) goals is to pay attention to details. Take care of the little things like work on your technique, work on your fundamentals and be very sound. That is my goal for these kids. I want them to be successful.”
Giangrosso has played high school and college football at the linebacker position. He has a wife, Patsy, and four boys: Eric, a sergeant in the army for 15 years; Patrick, an assistant wrestling coach at Missouri Valley College; Dominic, attending Missouri Valley College; and Jacob, who is starting a career in the army.
Dustin Thomas ‐ Defensive Line Coach Dustin Thomas grew up in Mountain View, Wyo. He joins the Hardrocker football program as the defensive line coach. He is a graduate of South Dakota School of Mines, earning a degree in Metallurgical Engineering. He is very familiar with the football team; he was a member of the Hardrocker program from 2000 to 2005. Dustin has been around athletics his whole life, but joining the coaching staff two season ago was his first experience in a formal coaching role. Dustin and his wife Amanda have a
one‐year old boy named Aiden Dean. Dustin's dad, Don Thomas, was inducted into the Wyoming Coaches Hall of Fame this past summer.
Greg Hodgin ‐‐‐ Running backs Coach
Hodgin is a native of Rapid City where he played football for the Rapid City Stevens Raiders, graduating in 1999. He has also been the baseball coach for Rapid City Central for the past three years. This will be Greg's second season as running backs coach at SD Mines. "I am excited for the opportunity to help the Hardrockers in any way I can, and I am glad to be here at South Dakota School of Mines.” said Hodgin.
Jason Beilstein ‐‐‐ Receivers Coach
Having Jason on the coaching staff is a real advantage for the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers, as he is fresh off the team. Jason was a four‐year starter, first as a quarterback during his freshman season then converting to the tight end position for his next three years. Jason is very familiar with the Hardrockers' game plan, the players on the team and knows the rigors of being a student‐athlete for South Dakota Mines. Jason’s last year playing was the 2009 season.
Scott Baird ‐‐‐ Athletic Trainer
Scott Baird is a 1997 graduate of Dakota Wesleyan University and is in his fourth year as head athletic trainer at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Before joining the School of Mines Athletic Department, he was an athletic trainer for the University of Wyoming where he covered both men's rugby and lacrosse. He brings much knowledge and experience to the School of Mines Sports Medicine Team. Scott has been married to Becky, a physical therapist in Rapid City, for 14 years and just added two new little twin girls to their family, Braedyn and Blakely.
Public Address Announcer Kevin Phillips has the longest running morning radio show in the Black Hills. Phillips has been announcing ball games since 1980 and has been on the radio since 1982. He's a member of the Rapid City Sports Hall Of Fame and a Black Hills Advertising Federation Silver Medal Winner, which is like the advertising Hall Of Fame. He can be heard on Magic 93.9 weekday mornings from 5:30-10am and on 97.5 The Hills from 2-5pm.
Tom Rudebusch and Ryan Cadwallader broadcast the Hardrocker football action every game at home and away on 97.5 FM the Hills and 920AM. The two have extensive knowledge and insight about the game of football. Tom Rudebusch has been the voice of the Hardrockers for over 30 years and Ryan is a former standout Hardrocker football player.

SEASON PREVIEW
By Brad Blume Sports Information Director
RAPID CITY ‐‐‐ This is the year for the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrocker football team. After finishing the past two seasons with 5‐5 overall records, the SD Mines program feels they have the talent and depth needed to make one final run at the Dakota Athletic Conference Championship before moving on the NCAA Div. II ranks.
Head coach Dan Kratzer, who is starting his sixth season with the Hardrockers, has built a solid foundation for this team. In his first year, less than 40 players were on the team. Now the roster is bursting, with just under 100 student‐athletes from across the country.
The biggest key for this year will be the Hardrockers ability to compete with every team in the DAC. SD Mines returns a healthy core of veteran players at every position – players that have been in the system for two or three years and know the schemes and plays that the coaching staff wants to execute.
The Hardrockers list a number of outstanding seniors: Everett Brill (linebacker from Elko, Nev.), Tom Lunzman (defensive back from Gretna, Neb.), Tim Luchini (linebacker from Findlay, Ohio), Trevor Roberts (tight end from Vancouver, Wash.), Dana Mellage (strong safety from Auburn, Neb.), Ian Prichard (strong safety from Richland, Wash.), Brian Kemnitz (defensive end from Vivian, S.D.), Wyatt Stangohr ( defensive lineman from Howard, S.D.), Mark Olson (offensive lineman from Hazen, N.D.), Ed Waliczek (wide receiver from Chicago, Ill.), Tyler Barth (running back from Dickinson, N.D.), and Joseph Berke (defensive back from Lexington, Neb.).
SD Mines also have number of other talented juniors and sophomores that will also contribute this season: Nick Russell (quarterback from San Diego, Calif.), Jamie Dale (running back from Alpine, Calif.), Dustin Meneley (defensive back and return specialist from Naples, Fla.), Andy Smith (AFCA All‐American place kicker from Pierre, S.D.), Tony Ostheimer (wide receiver from Ranchester, Wyo.), Bernis Berber (wide receiver from Tempe,
Ariz.), Josh Sherman (defensive back from Colome, S.D.), Andrew Isom (linebacker from Superior, Neb.), Houston Bashus (defensive back from Bismarck, N.D.), Gregory Blankenship (linebacker from Kinnear, Wyo.), Donovan Brill (defensive back from Elko, Nev.), Tanner Ireland (defensive back from Albuquerque, N.M.), Eric Yeash (linebacker from Louiseville, Colo.), Brian Freed (offensive lineman from Staunton, Va.), Joe Sanchez (quarterback from Gilbert, Ariz.), and Todd Sherman (offensive lineman from Winner, S.D.).
The individual statistics from the 2009 season speaks well for these upperclassmen and makes the 2010 campaign look optimistic. The Hardrockers posted some impressive marks which they plan to improve upon this year.
Offensively, Dale averaged 84.3 yards a game rushing, scored eight rushing touchdowns and scored three receiving TD's. Ostheimer had a conference‐high 66 receptions and caught seven touchdown passes while averaging 96.6 yards a game. Russell threw for 1,890 yards, made good on 172 of 310 completions and threw 15 TD passes on the season. Smith, who earned the first‐ever All‐American status for the Hardrockers, was 100 percent on the season in PATS (32/32), had a school record 52‐yard field goal, was the team's second leading scorer with 65 points and broke every kicking record SDM tracks. Defensively, Luchini led the team with 90 tackles; Lunzman had the most interceptions in 2009 with four, which he returned for 124 yards. Everett Brill recorded the most sacks on the season with 5.5 and also had the most tackles‐for‐loss with 19.5 to go along with the most forced fumbles on the team with three.
The Hardrockers also have a very skilled group of freshmen that will develop into fine football players while at SD Mines. The Hardrockers have approximately 30 new freshmen this season, most of which will become redshirt players, the most the Hardrockers have had in quite a while.
There will, however, also be a group of underclassmen that are expected to contribute right away, either on the field or in a support role on the depth chart.
New faces on the defensive squad include: Austin Adam (defensive lineman from Lenexa, Kan.), Karch Foley (defensive back from Philip, S.D.), Patrick Shaw (defensive back from Gilbert, Ariz.), and Kelby Wilkison (defensive back from Laramie, Wyo.).
Fresh to the Hardrockers’ offense are:
Juan Barron (offensive lineman from Mesa, Ariz.), Taylor Dutcher (offensive lineman from San Diego, Calif.), Austin Louchart (offensive lineman from Lawrenceville, Ga.), Adam Krause (offensive lineman from Afton, Minn.), Alan Xu (offensive lineman from Boise, Id.), and Chris Sawdey (fullback from Duluth, Ga.).
With a nice mix of skilled veterans and talented newcomers, the Hardrockers have everything in place to make that one final run at the conference crown. It’s a great opportunity for them and another stepping stone for the team and the program.

HARDROCKERS CARE
BLOOD DRIVE
Last year, the South Dakota School of Mines football team held its second annual blood drive in the team's locker room at O'Harra Stadium. The Hardrocker football players invited the rest of the student‐athletes in other sports programs at SDM to give blood as well. The United Blood Service of Rapid City set up in the 'Rocker locker room and had a steady stream of student‐athletes all day long."
EARTH DAY
South Dakota School of Mines commemorated its 125th anniversary April 22, 2010 (Earth Day) by partnering with Black Hills Power and implementing the “Power of Trees” program. With help from volunteers from BHP and SD Mines, 125 trees were planted on the campus of SDSMT and surrounding areas (50 on campus and 75 at Black Hills area schools).
Among the many volunteers to help plant the trees Thursday was a large contingent from the SD Mines Hardrocker Athletics Department. Those participating included student‐athletes, athletic administrative staff, and coaches who all pitched in to help improve the SDSMT campus and honor Earth Day.
The tree plantings took place on the north edge of campus. The holes were pre‐dug in the Surbeck Center parking lot and continued east down St. Joseph Street, ending at the far end of the O’Harra Stadium parking lot. Volunteers assisted in making sure the trees were planted correctly.
“This is a tremendous event for our campus, our environment and the future of our planet,” said Hardrocker Athletics Director Dick Kaiser. “I am extremely proud of all the student‐athletes and coaches who made it a priority to be part of this monumental day. This is the type of activity and participation the SDSMT athletics program wants to continue to bring to our community and our university.”
CAMPUS FOR KIDS
RAPID CITY ‐‐‐‐ Several members of the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrocker football program recently teamed up with Big Brothers, Big Sisters of the Black Hills to volunteer for the Campus Kids program in Rapid City.
Campus Kids is a program sponsored by Big Brothers, Big Sisters for children that are waiting to enter a mentoring program. Every Tuesday the ‘Rocker football players meet with kids to do some type of activity or game, then have dinner with the kids and help them with homework.
“We have several players within our program that do a lot of unsolicited volunteer work,” said Hardrocker football head coach Dan Kratzer. “These guys are a prime example of this. They are great on the field, off the field and in the classroom. They really make us proud.”
Members of the Hardrocker football team that are involved in the program are: junior Ian Prichard (an interdisciplinary sciences major from Richland, Wash.), junior Dustin Meneley (an industrial engineering major from Naples, Fla.), sophomore Ahmad Hasan (a chemical engineering major from Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore Houston Bashus (a environmental engineering major from Bismarck, N.D.).
