Background• Through DCS, farmers will get the quality inputs at a reasonable

price as well as the incremental returns for their produce. • DCS can provide the services to its members for the supply of milk

from the surplus producing area to urban consumer markets. • The DCS were protecting individual interest & pave the way for

common interest. • The services of the DCS improve the socio- economic conditions of

the members and strengthen the economy of the state as well as country. Various types of services are required in order to facilitate growth in dairy production.

• Without support of training facilities, credit linkages, procurement & marketing, inputs services of dairy sector can not be developed.

• Most of the dairy farmers are poor smallholders and farmers are depends on bank loans for dairy farming.

• Most of the farmers have a limited knowledge about the dairy farming.

Milk Procurement & Marketing:-

• Milk marketing is the main problems of the Dairy farmers specially in Assam. In this regard, DCS will play a vital role for the benefit of the members.

• DCS have to do networking for organizing milk collection centre for collection of surplus raw milk from their producers. Members of the DCS have to bring their produce milk to collection centre & DCS will market the same to urban consumers or Dairy Plants.

• If the DCS procure the milk from the collection centre it will lessen the consumption of time of the members.

• Members of the society get the reasonable price for supply of milk from the DCS biweekly/weekly at their door step.

• For procurement & marketing of their produce milk, DCS using hired vehicle. • For example, Sitajakhala DUSS, Jagiroad has established 13 nos of milk collection

centers in several locations of their jurisdiction for easy collection of milk from their members.

• The said DCS has appointed one Marketing Manager for procurement & Marketing. Milk collectors test milk at Collection Center and after collection the raw milk they are supplying the milk to Central Dairy, WAMUL, Dairy Fresh etc. and local market.

Feed & fodder supply:-

• One of the major problems of the member is feed & fodder. All the members are dependant on wheat bran and other local inputs like seasonal vegetables etc. Green fodders are not available throughout the year.

• So, DCS also help their members to increase milk production by providing cattle feed, fodder seeds etc. on subsidized rate. DCS should create a central storage facility so that they can import balanced cattle feed from the locally available market or other states and a swift mechanism for delivery to their members at a reasonable price which is absolute necessary. Otherwise member have to go to market for purchase the cattle feed in high price.

• It is observed during field visit that the cross breed/indigenous cows are capable of producing more milk if supply of balance feed is provided. It is revealed that during the last stage of pregnancy, the dairy farmers generally are reluctant to provide balance feed to their cattle as there is no milk production.

• The economic condition compelled most of the farmers to do so. For improving general health of animals, milk production, growth rate of calves, efficiency of feed utilization, etc.

• For Example, Sitajakhala DUSS, Jagiroad has created a Master Godown & 5 nos • sub godown for keeping cattle feed. • DCS purchase the Sappar from the suppliers at wholesale rate. Presently, they are • procuring Sappar @ Rs. 450.00 per 40 kgs bag from Guwahati. • Purchase price per Kg- Rs. 11.25• Selling price to members per Kg- Rs. 11.50• Sitajakhala DUSS, also established Mini Besan Feed Mill from their own fund supply the feed

to their farmers.

Inputs Programmes:-

• Dairy farmers also facing another problems i.e. Artificial Insemination (AI) health care of the animals etc. In this context, DCS also can deliver the services for AI, health cover amongst the members. Taking a look at the need of the dairy farmers, DCS may arrange inputs services programme time to time amongst the farmers like Animal Health Care Camp, First Aid, and AI through Veterinary personals so that dairy farmers can get the knowledge. In addition to that DCS may take steps to train up the Secretary/ member about Animal Health Management at the village level or at concerned institutes for the interest of the dairy farmers.

• For AI, semen may be purchased by the DCS. For example, Sitajakhala DUSS has purchase semen directly from Meghalaya, Rautak, Karnal @ Rs. 10.00-12.00 per straw. They have created semen Bank for the interest of the farmers. They have organized the Animal Health Care camp through Veterinary medicine Co. also.

• For AI, they have trained members under Gopal Mira through ALDA.

Training, Education, and Exposure:-

• To acquire the technical know how, management knowledge etc., DCS can provide Education & Training, for their members, employee so that they can contribute effectively to development of their society.

• DCS can arrange Exposure visit inside the state or outside state for its members.

• DCS may provide orientation training on clean milk production; management practices etc. at the village level and also recommend the DCS Secretary for Training at the cooperative institute from their own fund.

Finance for Dairy Farming:-

• The members of the societies are eligible to get the loan from the society, Nationalized Banks, Cooperative Institutes, NABARD etc. for procurement of milch cattles for increasing the milk production & extension of cowshed.

• For bankable loan, DCS may link up the members to concerned bank or financial institutes for loan.

Utility service viz. Gober Gas etc facility:-

• Dairy Cooperative Society can help their members to establish the Gober Gas Plant.

• For operation the said plant, per day 30-40 kgs cow dung is required against 4 cubic capacities plant.

• Members used the Gober Gas for domestic works like cooking etc.

• Therefore, for this purposes, DCS may provide the loan from their own fund or link up to DRDA/Khadi Gramoudyak Board or other financial institutes to establish the gober gas plant.
