LISTING OF SPECIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS MANDATED FOR USE BY
THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE BY PUBLIC LAWS OR GOVERNMENT
REGULATIONS
(LISTING LAST UPDATED APRIL 2015)

FOREWORD
The purpose of this document is to provide a list of known specifications and standards whose use by Department of Defense (DoD) program offices, buying activities, and contractors is mandated by Public Law or Government regulation. This information is intended for guidance only. Users must consult the actual Public Law or Government regulation in order to determine the applicability of a specification or standard, and if a waiver process exists to exempt mandatory use of a specification or standard.
For this document, a specification or standard is defined as any document developed or
adopted under the Defense Standardization Program (DSP) as described in DoDM 4120.24, “Defense Standardization Program Procedures” and includes non-Government standards, defense specifications and standards, federal specifications and standards, commercial item descriptions, data item descriptions, and international standardization agreements. A major body of mandated documents not included in this listing because of the frequency of changes and the volume of documents are those specifications and standards in the DoD Information Technology Standards Registry (DISR). Users are advised to consult the DISR directly at https://gtg.csd.disa.mil.
Also not included in this listing are the thousands of government and non-government
specifications, standards, and related documents referenced in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), which is the codification of the general and permanent rules published in the Federal Register by the executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) identifies these documents in the Standards Incorporated by Reference (SIBR) Database, which can be accessed at http://standards.gov/sibr/query/index.cfm.
This guide is organized first into sections of specifications and standards mandated for
use DoD-wide, then Army-wide, Navy-wide, Air Force-wide, and lastly by policy documents issued jointly by the Services and the Defense Logistics Agency. Within each section, mandated specifications and standards are listed in the following order:
• International Standardization Agreements • Non-Government Standards (in order of the standards developer acronym, then
numerically) • Commercial Item Descriptions • Federal Specifications • Federal Standards • Defense Specifications • Defense Standards • Data Item Descriptions
Wherever possible, the links listed herein take you to the actual document cited.
However, you may want to look at the following databases that are the source for the links to see if any changes have occurred.

• http://quicksearch.dla.mil/ is the database for all military and federal specifications, standards, and other standardization documents
• www.dtic.mil/whs/directives is the database for DoD directives, instructions, and other policy documents
• http://www.apd.army.mil/ is the database for Army publications • http://doni.dla.mil is the database for Navy publications • http://www.e-publishing.af.mil/index.asp is the database for Air Force publications • http://www.dla.mil/issuances is the database for Defense Logistics Agency publications
While every effort has been made to ensure the completeness of this listing, there are
undoubtedly Public Laws and Government regulations mandating the use of DSP specifications and standards of which we are not aware. Also, changes can occur to a Public Law or Government regulation adding and deleting references to specifications and standards. As we become aware of these occurrences, this listing will be changed. Recommended changes, additions, or deletions can be sent to Defense Standardization Program Office from the DSP website at http://dsp.dla.mil by clicking on “Contact Us.”

While the Act does not specifically cite FED-STD-795, it directs the Department of Defense and other federal agencies to prescribe standards for the design, construction, and alteration of buildings, structures, and facilities to ensure whenever possible that physically handicapped persons will have ready access to, and use of, such buildings. As noted in the foreword of FED-STD-795, this standard fulfills the provision of the law.
