I. Reinforced Concrete Pipe.

A. Scope of Work. The work shall consist of furnishing all labor, materials, andequipment for the complete installation of storm sewer pipe, in conformance withthe lines and grades shown on the plans or as established by the Engineer.Items of work or materials not specifically mentioned but necessary for thecompletion of storm sewer line construction shall be considered as incidentalto the items in the contract.

B. Materials.a) Pipe. Pipe shall be of the type, size, and class shown on the plans.

b) Reinforced Concrete Culvert Pipe. Reinforced concrete culvert pipeshall conform to the requirements of the Specifications for ReinforcedConcrete Culvert Pipe, ASTM C-76. Installations shall be made withcircular pipe conforming to the requirements for class III, class IV, orclass V, B-Wall, or C-Wall, of the ASTM C-76 specification.

c) All precast flared end sections shall conform to ASTM C-76. Toe wallsrequired shall conform to AASHTO M-170.1) All precast Bends, Wyes, and Tees shall comply with ASTM C-76,

AASHTO M-170 or Federal Specification SS-P-375.

d) Fine and coarse aggregates for the concrete mixture shall comply with therequirements of ASTM specifications.1) Cement shall comply with the requirements of ASTM C-150.2) Steel shall comply with the requirements ASTM C-185.3) Joint sealing material, plastic type, shall comply with ASTM

C-990, AASHTO M-198, or Federal Specification SS-S-210A.

e) D-load design pipe shall conform to ASTM C-655.

f) Preform tape-type plastic compound shall be applied in accordance with themanufacturer’s recommendations.

Standard SpecificationsSanitary Sewer Pipe

Reinforced Concrete Pipe:A. General. Reinforced concrete pipe shall be precast and shall conform to the

requirements of The Standard Specifications for Reinforced Concrete Low-HeadPressure Pipe, ASTM C-361, latest revision, except that strength may conform tothe requirements of ASTM C-76, with a minimum of “B” designation wallthickness, or the requirements of ASTM C-655, latest revision, for “D-Load”pipe,where permitted. Pipe shall be manufactured to the strength class shown onthe plans and/or indicated in the specifications.

B. Materials. Materials for the manufacture of reinforced concrete pipe shallconform to the requirements of the ASTM specifications listed above and shallinclude but not be limited to, the following:ASTM A-185 Welded Steel Wire Fabric for Concrete .ReinforcementASTM C-33 Specification for Concrete Aggregates.ASTM C-150 Specification for Portland Cement.

C. Joints. Joints may utilize steel joint rings, steel bells, and concrete spigots or beformed entirely of concrete. Joints shall contain at least one annular ring ofreinforcement in either the male of female end but in no case shall the jointreinforcement be less than that required in ASTM C-361. Joints shall be sealedusing a rubber gasket as the sole element to provide watertightness. All rubbergaskets shall fully comply with all requirements of ASTM C-443.

D. Quality Assurance. The interior surfaces of the pipe shall be a smooth, truecylindrical surface and shall be free of undulations or corrugations. No pipe shallexceed the permissible variations described in ASTM C-76, Section 12. Pipeshall be tested prior to delivery to thew job site in accordance with therequirements of ASTM C-361, Section 10, and ASTM C-497. Proof ofcompliance with the testing requirements shall be demonstrated to the purchaseprior to delivery of the pipe.

E. Marking. All pipe shall be clearly marked with the class, date of manufacture,and the manufacturer’s name or trademark. If elliptical reinforcement is used, theminor axes shall be designated on the outside of the pipe.

F. Fittings. All fittings shall be manufactured from pipe of the same type and classas the straight joints of pipe. Fittings shall be clearly marked with the fittingconfiguration.

Standard Precast Box Culvert SpecificationsI. Precast Concrete Box Culverts for ASTM C-850 or C-789 Standards

A. The precast concrete box sections for the culvert shall be in accordance with therequirements of ASTM C-1433. All boxes can be furnished in Interstate Loading,Earth Dead Loading, and Railroad Loading.

B. Fine and coarse aggregates for the concrete mixture shall comply with therequirements of ASTM Specifications.a) Cement shall comply with the requirements ASTM C-150.b) Steel shall comply with the requirements ASTM C-185, ASTM C-990.c) Joint sealing material, plastic type, shall comply with AASHTO M-198 orFederal Specification SS-S-210A.

C. Precast conical plugs shall be furnished for lifting holes.

D. Admixtures may be used with the approval of the engineer.

E. Curing shall be in accordance with ASTM standards. Box sections shallbe cured until the concrete developed the specified compressive strength.

F. End sections shall be precast to the same dimensions and shapes and withthe same reinforcement as shown for the culvert. Each precast endsection shall include approximately 2 feet of barrel floor, tapered 2 to 1as an integral unit. Precast headwalls and toe walls shall be furnishedas required.

G. The manufacturer may request approval of modified designs which differfrom the designs in ASTM C-1433. Such modified or special designsshall fully describe to the engineer any deviations from those standards.Computer designs shall be available for box culverts by the manufacturer.

H. The excavation and backfilling for the precast box sections and end sectionsshall be in accordance with the requirements of the manufacturer. The beddingshall be compacted to provide uniform support over the bottom of the box andend sections. No direct payment will be made for furnishing or placing granularmaterial.

I. The individual box section shall carefully be set to lines and grades shown on theplans with the female end upstream, and the male end extended the full lengthinto the adjacent section of box. When multicell boxes are used, a 1-1/2 inchminimum space shall be left between the adjacent precast sections. All jointsbetween individual box sections shall be sealed with an approved joint sealantmaterial.

J. Tapered precast plugs shall be thoroughly sealed with plastic joint material.Lifting devices shall have sufficient bearing on the inside of the box section toavoid damage resulting from a concentration stresses around the lift holes.

K. Preform tape type plastic compound shall be applied in accordance with themanufacturer’s recommendations.

L. Precast box culvert, complete in place, will be measured to the nearest foot alongthe geometrical center of the culvert.

M. The accepted quantities for the concrete box culvert complete in place will bepaid for at the unit price for the pay items included in the contract. Center-lineper lineal foot basis is recommended.

Standard Specifications for Manholes

Summary of Practice:All lift holes and any pipes entering the manhole are to be plugged. A vacuum will be

drawn and the vacuum drop over a specified time period is used to determine the acceptability ofthe manhole.

Procedure:A vacuum of 10 inches of mercury shall be drawn on the manhole, the valve on the

vacuum line of the test head is closed, and the vacuum pump shut off. The time shall bemeasured for the vacuum to drop from 10 inches of mercury to 9 inches.

The manhole shall pass if the time for the vacuum to drop to 9 inches of mercury meetsor exceeds the values indicated in the table below.

If the manhole fails thew initial test, necessary repairs shall be made by an approvedmethod. The manhole shall then be retested until a satisfactory test is obtained.
