Addendum/ErratumRulesRelatingtoAwards,Rule2.10ExclusionOnFebruary17,2012theUniversityCouncilapprovedchangestoRule2.10Exclusionthatreplacesthe currentruleinitsentiretyandiseffectiveimmediately.

OriginalRule2.10ExclusionprintedinHandbook(a) Thegroundsforexclusionshallnormallybe: (i) whenastudentobtainsaGPAbelow2.50 (MustGetHelpacademicstanding)in theirunitsineachoftwoconsecutive studyperiods.Anexcludedstudentwillbe informedtheyhavebeenexcludedfor onestudyperiodandadvisedoftheir reenrolmentandappealrights.Thestudy periodforwhichthestudentisexcluded willbeadvisedintheNotificationof Exclusionasitmaynotnecessarilybethe subsequentstudyperiod. (ii) Astudentreenrollingintheiroriginal courseorenrollinginanewcourse followingexclusionwhoobtainsaGPA below2.50inthefirststudyperiod followingtheirreturnmaybeexcluded bytheChairofSchoolBoard(or nomineewhoisnottheHeadofSchool) untiltheycandemonstratetheirability toundertakethecourse. (iii) Astudentwhofailstosatisfy compulsoryprofessionalexperienceor fieldworkrequirementsmaybe excludedbytheChairofSchoolBoard (ornomineewhoisnottheHeadof School)foraminimumofonestudy periodandmustapplyforreenrolment totheUniversitywhenreturningfrom exclusion. NewRule2.10Exclusionapproved17/02/2012(a) TheChairoftheSchoolBoardmayexcludea studentforamaximumofone(1)studyperiod whereastudenthas: (i) failedcompulsoryprofessional experienceorfieldworkrequirementsof thecourse;or (ii) failedthesameunitintheirthird(3rd) attemptandhascompletedlessthan twothirds()oftheircourse;or (iii) notmetspecificcourseruleswhich provideforexclusionincircumstances notdescribedabove. TheChairofSchoolBoardmayexcludea studentpermanentlyfromacoursewherea studenthas: (i) failedcompulsoryprofessional experienceorfieldworkrequirements forthesecondtime;or (ii) notcompletedtheircoursewithinthe maximumcompletiontimespecified underRule2.15DurationofCoursework AwardCourses;or (iii) failedthesameunitintheirfourth attemptandhascompletedlessthan twothirds()oftheircourse; (iv) notmetspecificcourseruleswhich provideforexclusionincircumstances notdescribedabove;or (v) notachievedsatisfactorycourse progressasdefinedbytheNational CodeoftheEducationServicesfor OverseasStudentsAct2000(theESOS Act)(onshoreinternationalstudents only). (iii) AChairofSchoolBoard(ornominee whoisnottheHeadofSchool)mayat anytimeseekalistofstudentswhose academicperformanceprovides groundsforexclusion. TheESOSActrequirestheUniversityto (d) monitortheacademicprogressofonshore internationalstudentsineachstudyperiod. (i) Attheendofeachstudyperiod,upon notificationoffinalgrades,theDirector ofStudentServicesshallprovideall ChairsofSchoolBoards,andthe Director,InternationalOfficewithalist oftheonshoreinternationalstudents whoarebeingexcluded.AChairof SchoolBoard(ornomineewhoisnot theHeadofSchool)shallreviewthe academicperformanceofthose onshoreinternationalstudentswho meetanyofthegroundsforexclusion and,inconsultationwiththeDirector, InternationalOffice,shallwithinfive(5) workingdaysmakeadeterminationand notifytheDirectorofStudentServices inwritingthat: (1) thestudentbeallowedtocontinue; or (e) (2) thestudentbeallowedtocontinue withspecifiedconditionsrelatingto aninterventionstrategy;or (3) thestudentbeexcludedfora specifiedperiod;or (4) thestudentbeexcluded permanently.TheChairofSchool Board(ornomineewhoisnotthe HeadofSchool)willrefertothe ESOSActandtheNationalCode andtakeintoconsideration relevantmatters,including compliancewiththeESOSActand whetherastudentisonand complyingwithadocumented Act)whichcontributedtopoor academicperformance;and (3) ensuringcompliancewiththe NationalCodeoftheEducation ServicesforOverseasStudentsAct 2000(theESOSAct)(onshore internationalstudentsonly). (v) Inthecaseofonshoreinternational students,theChairofSchoolBoard(or nominee)shallfollowthesameprocess asstipulatedin2.10(c)(ii)and(iii),but makeadeterminationinconsultation withtheDirector,InternationalOffice. NotificationofExclusion (i) FollowingreturnfromtheChairof SchoolBoardofthelistofstudentsto beexcluded(includingtherelevant groundsforexclusioninaccordance withRule2.10(a)and(b),theDirector ofStudentServiceswillwritetoeach studentwithinfive(5)workingdays, notifyingthemofthedecisionofthe ChairofSchoolBoard.Thenotification shallinclude: (1) specificationofthegroundsfor exclusion; (2) anindicationofthestudentsright ofappealagainstthedecisionof theChairofSchoolBoard; (3) detailsoftheappealprocess;and (4) copiesof,orlinksto,prescribed formsrequiredtocompletethe appealprocess. ReviewofExclusion (i) Anexcludedstudentmayrequestthe HeadofSchooltoreviewtheir exclusion. (ii) Thisrequest,statingclearlythereasons forareview,mustbesubmittedin writingontheprescribedformtothe HeadofSchoolwithintwenty(20) workingdaysoftheUniversitysofficial dateofnotification. (iii) ArequestforreviewtotheHeadof Schoolmayonlybemadeonthe groundsthatRule2.10(a)(i)(iii)or 2.10(b)(i)(v)wasinappropriatelyor unreasonablyapplied,orthatthere werecompellingorcompassionate

interventionstrategy,orifthere arecompassionateorcompelling circumstances,asidentifiedinthe ESOSAct,whichcontributedto pooracademicperformance. ArequestforreviewtotheHeadof Schoolmayonlybemadeonthe groundsthatRule2.10(a)(i)(vi)was inappropriatelyorunreasonably applied,orthattherewereexceptional circumstancesasidentifiedintheESOS Actwhichcontributedtopooracademic performance.TheHeadofSchoolshall reviewthedecisionandadvisethe studentandStudentServicesinwriting oftheoutcomeofthisreviewwithinten (10)workingdaysofreceiptofthe request. (iv) NotwithstandingRule2.10(g),an internationalonshorestudentwillbe advisedoftheinternalappealsprocess andtheirrighttoaccessanexternal appealsprocessthroughtheNSW OmbudsmansOfficeiftheyarenot satisfiedwiththeresultorconductof theappealsprocessasdescribed. AstudentmayrequesttheHeadofSchoolto reviewtheirexclusion.Thisrequest,stating clearlythereasonsforareview,mustbe submittedinwritingtotheHeadofSchool withinten(10)workingdaysofthe Universitysofficialdateofnotification.A requestforreviewtotheHeadofSchoolmay onlybemadeonthegroundsthatRule 2.10(a)(i)(vi)wasinappropriatelyor unreasonablyapplied,orthattherewere exceptionalcircumstanceswhichcontributed

(ii) Thisrequest,statingclearlythereasons forappeal,mustbesubmittedinwriting ontheprescribedformtotheAcademic BoardAppealsCommitteewithinten (10)workingdaysofthedateonwhich theHeadofSchooladvisedthestudent abouttheoutcomeofthereview.Alate appealmaybereceivedatthe discretionoftheChairoftheAcademic BoardAppealsCommittee. Anexcludedstudentmayreenrolfollowing theexpirationoftheirexclusion.Anexcluded studentmayreenrolinsubsequentstudy periodspriortoexpirationofaperiodof exclusion,butwillnotbepermittedto recommencestudyuntilexpirationofthe periodofexclusion.Uponreenrollingthe studentmustconsultwiththeirCourse Coordinatorand,inthecaseofinternational onshorestudents,aninternationalstudent adviser,toestablishastudyplanandunit load. Anexcludedstudentmaynotenrolin anotherSCUcourseduringtheperiodof exclusionwithoutthepermissionoftheHead ofSchoolwhohasresponsibilityforthe School/Collegewhichoffersthecoursein whichthestudentwishestoenrol.Upon enrolmentthestudentwillbewithdrawn fromthecoursefromwhichtheywere excluded. Ifastudentpreviouslyexcludedisaccepted forenrolmentinanewcoursetheirstanding willbethesameasallcommencingstudents. conductoftheinternalappealsprocess asdescribed. (iii) Uponreenrollingthestudentmust consultwiththeirCourseCoordinator (ornominee)and,inthecaseof internationalonshorestudents,an InternationalStudentAdviser,to establishastudyplanandappropriate unitload. (iv) Ifastudentpreviouslyexcludedaccepts anofferinanewcoursetheirstatuswill bethesameasallcommencing students. AdvancedStanding (i) Anexcludedstudentmaynotreceive advancedstandingonthebasisofstudy completedatanotherinstitutionduring theperiodofexclusionunlessthe studenthasreceivedpermissionofthe HeadofSchoolinadvanceofsuch study.

Thisformatallowsforthedevelopmentovertimeofanewrangeofoptionsforstudents.Theinclusionofan equalthirdsessionprovidesstudentswithaddedflexibility,includingtheoptiontofasttracksomecourses, catchuporrepeatunits,orspreadthestudyloadacrossthreeteachingperiods.Italsoprovidesnew opportunitiesforprofessionaldevelopmentcourses.

SessionsEachsessionisof15weeksdurationcomprising 12teachingweeks,amidsessionbreakanda studybreakbeforeexams.Atwoweek intersessionbreakoccursbetweeneachsession. Thereisanadditionalnonteachingweekin session3toaccommodatetheChristmasperiod.
