    Reflections from

    the President

    Caren Zorman

    Chai 5 - Next Steps

We’re moving on and I’m so excited! I am pleased to an-

nounce that the Chai 5 Campaign to hire a second clergy

has received Board approval to proceed to the next step of

    the hiring process – interviewing.

At the December board meeting, trustees heard an update from Co-Chair Deborah

Gonzalez on the status of the Campaign. The original goal of $324,000 was de-

vised based on a three-year salary, inclusive of payroll taxes and other govern-

ment obligations. As of today, the Campaign has raised approximately 80% of the

goal, with special recognition to Rowena Fahn for her gift of $80,000.

There are 34 families who have pledged the “full” amount of $1,080 per year for

three years; there are 29 families who have pledged “half” of the amount for three

years; and then there are others who have pledged one year at a time. All of the

Trustees have pledged to the campaign, as well. And there are those that have

said that you want to take a “wait and see” approach before you commit.

Last year, in the hopes that we would hire someone, applications were completed

for the Cantorial Assembly as well as the Rabbinical Assembly. Given the late-

ness of our application (early winter is best) and our lack of sufficient funding,

our efforts were for naught. Now, with increased funding, we can send a contin-

gent to New York to interview soon-to-be graduates from the Jewish Theological

Seminary (JTS) in February and, perhaps, another contingent to Long Beach, Cal-

ifornia to interview more experienced rabbis later on in the month.

Once the search committee, chaired by First Vice-President Jonathan Lightman,

has had a chance to review resumes and hear feedback from those who attended

the interview sessions, candidates will be interviewed again via Skype or other

modern telecommunications mediums. After that, in the spring, candidates will

be flown out to Sacramento for a “trial run” on a Shabbat with feedback to the

search committee. Once all of the candidates have had an opportunity to come out

and experience the awe and magic of Mosaic Law, a decision will be rendered

with the new clergy starting in August – in time for the High Holydays of 5774

(which is incredibly early this year – like Labor Day!).

And so begins a new chapter in the history of Mosaic Law – one that will see

membership growth, piqued interest and building excitement in what the new

cantor or rabbi will bring to our congregation, community and city. It’s a very

exciting time to be a part of this very special kehilla.

From the Men’s Club - Alex Zamansky

    Hello from the Men’s Club!

Magic Johnson was once paraphrased JFK by saying, “Ask not what

your teammates can do for you, but what you can do for your team-

mates.” I can tell you, from where I sat during our annual Latke Cup

on December 22nd, in spite of losing a close and heated matchup,

unselfish ballplay was a consistent theme for our Mosaic Law Lions.

Thank you Steve Turtletaub for your time and for coaching this squad

of talented athletes. Additionally, the Men’s Club teamed up with the

B’nai Israel Brotherhood and Jeff Shulman to sponsor the latke recep-

tion that followed. Needless to say, all 300 latkes were eaten!

Look for announcements and updates for our next big event, the MLC

World Series of Poker, on February 9th in the Social Hall. Buy-in is

$20 and there will be beverages, snacks and entertainment. Did I men-

tion that there is a top prize of $500? Proceeds from this event will go

directly to benefit our shul. Check out the Mosiac Law Facebook page

for updated information as we get closer.

Lastly, if you haven’t joined Men’s Club and wish to, please contact

myself or anyone on our Executive Board, as we will be happy to give you information on upcoming social events that

you may find interesting. We are looking to add one more Executive Member at-Large so if you are interested, please

contact me directly at [email protected].

    B’Shalom.

    Brick Update

For every life there is a story... days of wonder and

achievenment, and inevitably, times of sorrow. What

better way to permanently mark the passages and

milestones that effect our Mosaic Law Family lives,

than to have them permanently inscribed on a brick

and placed in the MLC Courtyard. We are anxious

to get started with this years order of bricks. If you

would like to be included, please pick up an order

form in the office. The cost of each brick is $125.00.

If you have any questions, call contact the office or

Sunday, January 20th at 10am - The Jewish Genealogi-

cal Society of Sacramento Presents: Reconstructing

Family Information From Almost Nothing. Janice

Sellers will provide a case study demonstrating techniques

and sources allowing the reconstruction of seven genera-

tions of a family. The immigrant ancestors of the family

came from Eastern Europe to rural western Pennsylvania

in the mid-1800s. Her search began with the slimmest of

information - a town name, one person's last name, a mar-

ried woman's first name and a third person's occupation.

A key clue was a newspaper obituary. Janice Sellers is a

professional genealogist who specializes in newspaper and

Jewish research. She is the editor of two genealogy jour-

nals and a member of numerous genealogy societies,

including the San Francisco Bay Area Jewish Genealogi-

cal Society. Janice has volunteered for 12 years at the

Oakland Family Search Library. All are welcome to attend

the January 20, 2013, 10 a.m. meeting at the Albert

Einstein Residence Center, 1935 Wright St., Sacramento.
