Matthew 28:1-10

Page 17: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.

Page 18: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said.

Page 19: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples.

Page 20: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

And behold, Jesus met them and said, “ Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.

Did You Feel the Mountains Tremble?

Page 31: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

Did you feel the mountains tremble

Did you hear the oceans roar

When the people rose to sing of

Jesus Christ the risen One

Page 32: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

Did you feel the people tremble

Did you hear the singers roar

When the lost began to sing of

Jesus Christ the saving One

Page 33: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

And we can see that God

You're moving

A mighty river through the nations

Page 34: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

And young and old will turn to Jesus

Fling wide you heavenly gates

Prepare the way of the risen Lord

Page 35: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

Open up the doors and

let the music play

Let the streets resound

with singing

Songs that bring Your hope

Songs that bring Your joy

Dancers who dance upon injustice

Page 37: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

Do you feel the darkness tremble

When all the saints join in one song

And all the streams flow as one river

To wash away our brokenness

Page 38: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

And here we see that

God You're moving

A time of jubilee is coming

Page 39: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

At The Cross/Mighty to Save

Page 50: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

Oh Lord You've searched me

You know my way

Even when I fail You

I know You love me

Page 51: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

Your holy presence

Surrounding me

In every season

I know You love me

I know You love me

Page 52: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

At the cross I bow my knee

Where Your blood was shed for me

There's no greater love than this

Page 53: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

You have overcome the grave

Your glory fills the highest place

What can separate me now

Page 54: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

You go before me

You shield my way

Your hand upholds me

I know You love me

I know You love me

Page 55: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

You tore the veil You made a way

When You said that it is done

You tore the veil You made a way

When You said that it is done

Scripture Reading

1 Corinthians 15:1-11

Page 86: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you— unless you believed in vain.

Page 87: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.

Page 88: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.

Page 89: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain.

Page 90: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

Seven observations on the resurrection

Page 92: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

1. Jesus did not simply return to a normal biological life as one whom, by the laws of biology, would eventually die again.

Page 93: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

2. Jesus is not a ghost or spirit. He does not belong to the realm of the dead, but is able to reveal himself in the realm of the living.

Page 94: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

3. Jesus’ appearances are not out of body mystical experiences or hallucinations by his grief stricken followers.

Page 95: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

4. Jesus’ resurrection points beyond history, but has left a footprint within history. Witnesses can attest it as an event of an entirely new kind.

Page 96: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

5. Jesus’ resurrection appearances were a matter of assembling a circle of disciples who would be able to testify that Jesus did not remain in the grave that he lives on.

Page 97: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

6. Jesus’ resurrection was utterly different, a breaking out into an entirely new form of life, into a life that no longer subject to the law of dying.

Page 98: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

7. Jesus’ resurrection is a universal event opening up a new dimension of human existence in the midst of the continuing old world.

Page 99: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

Question: “So how do we get to this wholly “other” human existence on earth now?”

Page 100: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

Answer: Give back the government of the kingdom of heaven back to God.

Page 101: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

A picture of this wholly “other” human existence governed by God is given to us in Acts 2:41-47

Page 102: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

And they devoted themselves to the apostles ' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.

Page 103: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.

Page 104: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,

Page 105: Scripture Reading Matthew 28:1-10.

praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
