We see an office with its door closed. On the side of thedoor is a printout with the following quote :

Different youtube video streams. Fanatic faces in variouslive situations are captured in the video streams.

These are Intercut with violent, grainy and ultra slow motionvisuals from Mumbai riots and blasts....

The first fanatic speech is set in a massive public rally.

FANATIC 1Kaun hai rey hai yeh Shahid Azmi?samajhta kya hai apne aap ko?Saale ko Pakistan bhejo. Shivajimaharaj ke baare mein ultabolnewaale ko nikaalo yahaan se.Aise bhadwon ko yahan nahin rahnedenge hum.

The second fanatic speech is a television interview with aseedy television channel.

FANATIC 2Shahid Azmi ek terrorist hai jojail mein tha. Ab jail se baharaakar doosre terrorist ko bachatahai. Sharm aati hai apne systempe, jo Azmi jaise sabse ghatiyadarze ke aadmi ko lawyer banne serok nahin sakti. Saalon ko arrestkarte hi maar kyon nahin dete?

The third fanatic speech is a man in white robes with a softmanner seated on a large throne like chair made out of silverand upholstered with red suede.

FANATIC 3Advocate shahid azmi, tum logonko Gandhi ne sahuliyat di rahneki…Usko tum log adhikaar samajhnelage… Gandhi ne jo bhul ki thiazaadi ke samay usko hum abhi takbhugat rahein hain.

We see a court in procedure. We see around, with theProsecutor standing and presenting his views...Not audible.We see the defense lawyer sitting and listening attentively.This is SHAHID AZMI. We pan across to the man in the dockFAHIM ANSARI and slowly we move to the Judge.

JUDGEDefense.

Prosecutor sits. Shahid stands to make his statement.

SHAHIDYour Honour, Office colleagues kibaat karein ya padosiyon ki, koiis baat par yakin nahin karta.Yeh, mere client ke co workers joDubai mein uske saath kaam kartethay, unka ek letter addressed toyou. Police mein koi record bhinahin hai inka.

PROSECUTORDefence ke is baat se main sahmathoon ki inki local Police meinkoi record nahin. Haan yeh Rampurjail mein zaroor thay yahan aaneyse pahle.

SHAHIDYour honour, Prosecution jisarrest ki baat kar raha hai wohcase Uttar pradesh ka hai. Humaaj yahan ke case ki discussionkar rahein hain.

PROSECUTORWoh bhi terrorism ka hi case hai.Your honour, main yeh kah rahahoon ki inka past, inke presentaur future par roshni zaroor daltahai. Yeh jail mein tha. Isse ekbaat zaroor saaf hoti hai- inkaanti social bent.

SHAHIDJab yeh saaf hai ki dono mein koico-relation nahin hai?

PROSECUTOR(silent)

SHAHIDShivaji.. bhi thay, jail mein.Kya Woh bhi anti social thay?

PROSECUTOR(jumps up, enraged)

Defense is baat ko kahan se kahanle jaa rahi hai. Aap ek terroraccused ki tulna ek aitihasikvyaktitva ke saath kaise kar saktehain?

SHAHIDNot comparing. Main bas yeh poochraha hoon ki agar aaj is katgharemein Shivaji maharaj khade hotetoh kya aap faisla unke is casekay evidence ko dekh ke lete yaphir ye dekhke ki past mein wohjail mein thay?

The defense is answer less. We pan across to see a man makinga phone call just outside the court room.

Shahid is walking in the alley with his friend, Ramanathan..

RAMANATHANKabhi sun bhi liya kar doston kibaat, Shahid.

SHAHIDRam, sun..

They start walking down the stairs..

RAMANATHANMain nahin sununga. your highnessko pata chalne de..

Shahid smiles.

SHAHIDYaar... keep her out of this...please ussey mat bataana...

They reach the bottom of the staircase where a group of 4men is waiting for them. They circle Shahid..

RAMANATHANKya ho raha hai yeh.

FIRST MANSaalya, chutiya..tu bol kaiseshakat rey..

SHAHIDKya?

SECOND MANBharat ki shaan hai..ShivajiMaharaj..

THIRD MANSaala atankwadi madharchod...Tere ko kya lagta hai? kuch bhibakwas karega aur hum log sun lenge?

Fourth man takes his collar in his hand, paints his faceblack.The rest use their legs and hands.Ramanathan yells forhelp. The group runs away.

Shahid is breathing with difficulty. Ramanathan makes himsit and pats him on his back..

We see Shahid's face painted black as we go closer to hisface...

6 6EXT. SRINAGAR - NIGHT - 1992

FLASHBACK A BEGINS. Pitch dark, moonless night. Shahid, 18crossing the POK border with a group. They are clad in apathani and a shawl. Hidden underneath these shawls are AK47 of which we get a sneak peek. Shahid is terrified. Theycross the border. 5 of the lot kiss the soil as Shahidwatches them, in his own deep thought. They start walking,next meet a Pakistani army major who is there with a jeep.Sun is rising as they pray. It is one of the best sunrisesShahid has seen, he takes deep breaths and feels reallycharged up. Smiles.

7 7INT. SHIVAJI NAGAR, SHAHID'S HOUSE - NIGHT - 1992

Shahid is in his room on the first floor...Khalid is asleepwhile his younger brother RASHID is reading a book..Opensthe window, looks out..He sees a man pouring kerosene in ahouse next lane...Shahid isn't sure about what the man is upto but keeps looking as the man moves away...Man comes backand throws a burning kerosene bottle and starts running...Shahid runs down the staircase and gets out of thebackdoor...Arif and mother yell in unison asking him tostop...Arif runs to the door and stands there...Mother comesto the door to see Smoke in the air.

8 8EXT. SHIVAJI NAGAR STREET - NIGHT - 1992

Smoke gets heavier as Shahid crosses and reaches the street...

He goes near the house on fire..as he is about to turn forthe door...3 adults and a child aged about 10 years on fire,run out...Shahid stands their stunned for a second...startscoughing with the thick smoke...

He looks on the outer street to see a procession of radicalson the main road....they are armed with swords and areforcing people out...of their houses...

Very soon there is mayhem on the entire stretch with houseson fire, people screaming, running helter-skelter and mixedcries of women, children and men.

In fear Shahid turns back and with great difficulty runstowards his house..

9 9INT. SHIVAJI NAGAR, SHAHID'S HOUSE - NIGHT - 1992

Shahid comes back and starts knocking...

Mother and Arif sit near the window. Its dark inside...Shahidcontinues knocking and starts yelling that its him...Arifstands but mother forces him to sit. Arif cant take itanymore...opens the window and ask him to come from the maindoor...Shahid runs...Arif rushes down...mother follows...Arifopens and Shahid gets inside, and Arif just looks outside tosee if anyone was watching and closes the door..Mother startsslapping Shahid continuously before she breaks down, Arifkeeps her from losing balance. Shahid is silent - seethingand fearful.

10 10EXT. MUMBAI STREET - LATE AFTERNOON - 1992

We go past an electronic store with multiple television sets.One of the televisions is broadcasting the news. We seefootage showing the demolition of Babari Masjid by the Hindukar sewaks...

11 11EXT. OUTSIDE THE CAMP - DAY - 1993

A whole group is escorted to the camp. Shahid smiles to breakthe ice. Only RAFIQ responds. The camp is located in themiddle of nowhere. An air of nothingness in the air. Shahidwaits outside the camp with the others.

12 12EXT. OUTSIDE CAMP - DAY - 1993

A day passes, group is getting impatient with time tickingaway. We see the changing sky while Shahid and RAFIQ exchangea glance at each other.

RAFIQLagta hai humein dono partnerhonge andar. Iii saala sab tohapne mein laga rahega.

SHAHIDPahle andar to jaayein..

A man walks out to the gate and yells at Shahid and Rafiq togo and sit with the rest of group.

13 13EXT. CAMP - DAY - 1993

A man comes out and directs them to walk behind him. Next,they are in a room with a trainer. The trainer has a desk infront of him with small boxes.

COMMANDERApne Paise aur jevar in dabbonmein rakho..Kisi ke paas passporthai?

Waits for a reaction...All in the group shake their heads...Shahid goes first. Everyone follows suit. The last man to gois a Kashmiri who is wearing a chain with a locket...He takesout money and keeps it in the box...Turns back to go to hisseat....

COMMANDER (CONT'D)Ruko..

He turns...

COMMANDER (CONT'D)Behre ho?

The cops laugh.

SECOND COPGanesh jaane de rey... idhar hikar denga yeh... Aur phir aisabaas marega.

(to the man)Tu Jaa.

As the man rushes towards the toilet we go around the nearlydeserted 'basti' to see Shahid at the window watching thisbanter.

15 15INT. SHIVAJI NAGAR, SHAHID'SHOUSE - LATE AFTERNOON - 1992

On Shahid's face we hear the sound of a gun shot and the cryof a man falling down. Shahid hurriedly closes the window.We remain on the closed window.

Continuation of Sc.13

We return to the scene with the man having collapsed to theground, blood spurting out of his head. The cops come closeto him and fire a few more shots. They kick the dead body.The man shakes with rigor mortis. Distant sound of a policesiren is heard.

The 'cops' look at each other and begin to run as the soundsof the siren come closer.

Shahid sits on the floor. Sobbing.

18 18EXT. CAMP - DAWN - 1993

A group of 40 fresh recruits are assembled in a ground. Thecommander of the training camp is about to give a speech.Expectation in the air. Shahid and, Rafiq (the dark skinnedboy) stand in a line together. The Commander makes an entry.He walks straight to the podium, confident gait. Stands thereand sizes up a very young group. Smiles and starts.

COMMANDERGhulam hone se badtar darza insaanke liye kuuch nahin. Jo Iraq meinhua, bosnia mein ho raha hai,kalKashmir mein bhi hoga.

As this speech continues, the following visuals are seen :Grind starts at 3.30 a.m with the early morning prayer. (Itis not compulsory in Islam, but an avid Muslim would nevermiss it. Here they cant!) One found sleeping is forciblywoken up. They offer their prayers and go for jogging.

Come back at 6.00 after 2 hours. Very exhausted group, eachone of them panting for air. They start taking showersimmediately. Self Service!!! They pull water from the well.They are taking aim at paper targets.

Group shown having breakfast. All sitting on the floor as aMulla supervises the arrangement standing at a distance.

Next they are in a class where they are studying Koran.

The sun is out, and the group is in the ground doing militarydrills....

Ek gair mazhabi mulkya ek kaafir padosi, Nasl darnasl kabr mein chali gayin paryeh khauff dafan nahin kar paayehum. Bas.Bas bahut hua. Kya hummujahideen is khauff ko na sirfapne aap se par apne saaremussalman bhaiyon ke dil se bhinikal paayenge? Hamesha, hameshake liye. Yaad rahe, insaan kiasli taqat uske jazbaat ki gehraimein hai. The speech ends and we catch Shahid and Rafiq sit for anearly dinner...Shahid is disgruntled.

SHAHIDDimaag ki vaat laga rahe log. RozSubah 3 baje phir utho aur phirwahi.

RAFIQToh tumko kaa karna hai?

They hear voices. They look out of the window and seePakistanis fighting and abusing each other in Punjabi.

RAFIQ (CONT'D)Suwar ko gahna pahnane doge tohtatti khana thode chodega.

Shahid manages a smile.

19 19EXT. CAMP, TRAINING GROUND - DAY - 1993

Montage continues

A group of 10 is given training by a New Commander. Theytrain for mountain climbing.

A few men are assembling bombs. Their commander is teachingthem how to assemble a bomb.

They are taught communication and surveillance techniques.

22 22EXT. CAMP, TRAINING GROUND - DAY - 1993

A few days pass, Shahid has an adolescent beard. They aretaking aim at paper targets.

23 23INT. CAMP, CLASSROOM - DAY - 1993

We catch Shahid is sitting in an educational class. A mullais giving the lesson. 20 students are in the class.

TEACHER(A little rhetorical)

Hamare dushmanon ki tadad humsekahin zyaada hai aur unke paas ekse badhkar aala hathyar bhi. Kaiserokenge hum unhein? Sirf ek rastahai. Shahadat.

Fear in students. He tries to change the course.

TEACHER (CONT'D)Tum mein se kiske ghar mein naukarki sahuliyat thi?

The boys look at each other faces as the teacher waits forsomeone. No body raises a hand. Teacher hides his surprise.

TEACHER (CONT'D)Jannat mein tumhare 80,000 khidmatgaar honge.

The kids smile when they hear that.

TEACHER (CONT'D)Jaise yeh tumhari yeh dozakhzindagi ka khatama hoga, tumharidoosri zindagi ki shuruwat. Wahantumhein woh saari khushiyan milegijo tumhein yahaan nasib nahin hui.Har qurbani ke liye taiyaar rahnafarz hai mujahid ka. Kal hamare 2,sabse dilair jawaan qurban honge.Insha Allah.

TEACHERInsaani Bomb.

SHAHIDKhud Khushi ki izzazat nahin detaIslam.

TEACHER(a little agitated)

Tumhein lagta hai yeh khud kushihai?... Yeh meri nazar meinshahadat hai. Khud kushi kamzordil karte hain, shahadat ekqurbani hai jo mazboot iradon kebina mumkin nahin. Khud kushimayus,afsurd dimaag ki fitrathai.Shahadat naye waqt ka aghaazhai jismein ummid hai.. Islam kesaath ho rahe nainsaafi se nijaatki. Khud Kushi sharmnaak hai,isliye Islam pabandi lagata hai.Shahadat kismat walon ko miltihai..Gadhe, 100 Janam bhi lengetoh bhi yeh nahin samjhenge.

Everyone is convinced with the answer. Shahid does not agreebut wary of open dissent, looks down.

24 24INT. CAMP, TENT - MORNING - 1993

Shahid is shivering in his blanket, very cold. He opens hiseyes to see his mother sitting and smiling near his bed.

He smiles but cant see her anymore. We hear dialogues with aclose up on Shahid's sad face.

MOTHER (O.S.)Humne kabhi kisi ka bura nahinkiya. Humare saath kuuch buranahin hoga..

SHAHID (O.S)Nusrat khala ne bhi kisike saathgalat nahin kiya...

MOTHER (O.S)Galat aur sahi ka faisala is gharmein main karoongi.

25 25EXT. CAMP - EVENING - 1993

Shahid and Rafiq are walking together... We join from themiddle of their conversation.

SHAHIDMain hoon idhar, ghar mein kisiko maloom nahin...Toh main aanatoh chahta tha...

RAFIQIii Kaise?

SHAHIDAmmi ko pata laga toh meri khaalutarwa dengi...

RAFIQBhak. Mazaak kar rahe ho.

Shahid nods.They see a large crowd. The crowd seems to bevery charged up, they are all raising their hands inInquilaab. They walk towards the spot... The conversationstops as they reach the spot. They see a man bent on hisknees and looking down. Somebody pats Shahid gently frombehind. Shahid looks back. It's ABRAAR.

ABRARKya haal chaal hai?

RAFIQWahi chamdi wahi khaal hai.

They all smile.

SHAHIDYeh aadmi aise kyun baitha hai?

ABRARPolice informer.

RAFIQToh ab ka hoga?

ABRARDekhte jao.

Rafiq and Shahid look, stunned. A man in a mask comes up andstarts reading the farmaan as the crowd chant Allah u Akbaragain and again. Informant starts shivering. Farmaan read,the reader puts a black mask on the face of the informantbent on his knees. He starts shaking.

The farmaan reader takes out a knife and bends to slice hishead as the camera focuses on Shahid. Muffled grunts at thetime of beheading in the background... He turns back andstarts walking in haste as Abrar and Rafiq walk behind him.They sit in a corner. Shahid is distraught. Abrar stands upto leave. Pats him gently on his back.

ABRAR (CONT'D)Bacche, nikal lo yahan se. Warnakya galat hai kya sahi yeh sochnaband kar.

26 26INT. CAMP - NIGHT - 1993

Shahid is lying in the bed, eyes closed. Memories ofbeheading playing in his head. "Kya Galat kya sahi" He closeshis eyes and starts weeping

27 27EXT. CAMP - MORNING - 1993

Shahid is taking a bath on the well and Rafiq is with him.Shahid sees a Pakistani mujahid walking towards the exitwith his luggage. He smiles when he sees Shahid and makes agesture with his hand of a plane taking off. Shahid getsgreen with envy. He walks up to his TRAINER.

SHAHIDJanaab, mujhe ghar jaana hai...

TRAINERNamumkin...

SHAHIDJanaab,Meri tabiyat bahut kharabhai. Sirf 10 din.

TRAINERTabiyat kharab bhi hai aur patabhi hai kitne din lagenge thikhone mein. Kya baat hai. Kyabimari hai doctor saab. humeinbhi bataaye?

SHAHIDMigraine, Sir. ...

TRAINER(doesn't look)

Janaab, sir nahin! Accha, TumheinSrinagar bhej dete hain.Wahan Tajhotel mein rukna.AC room meinrahna.Dal lake mein naav.Ilaajbhi kara lena aur apni maa bahanki izzat ek hote hue bhi dekhlena.

(looks up)Shaamil bhi ho jaana.Jawan ho,kami kis baat ki hai. Phir campka doctor toh aise bhi thik nahinkar sakta.Uski dawai bhi farzi.Kyun?

Shahid's eyes go moist. Tears roll down his cheeks.

SHAHIDJanaab...

TRAINERAaj araam karo.Doctor ke paas jao.Aur kal training mein dikho. Chalo.

Shahid turns back, wipes his eyes. The crying does not stopas he walks away slowly.

28 28EXT. CAMP - EVENING - 1993

Shahid walks alone. He sees a GROUP OF PAKISTANI MUJAHIDSsmoking weed. He stands and stares at them.

The group stands up as Shahid starts leaving.

MUJAHID-1Abey ruk...

Shahid stops. Hesitant. The group reaches there.

MUJAHID-2Kisko ghoor raha tha?

He starts pushing him backwards.

Shahid mumbles. The remaining in the group keep up a stepwith the gang leader as the camera captures them advancingtowards Shahid, as the man is pushing him back.

29 29EXT. CAMP, GROUND - EVENING - 1993

Shahid lies there badly bruised. Rafiq comes and takes himto the his tent.

30 30INT. CAMP, TENT - EVENING - 1993

Rafiq enters the tent and places Shahid on his bed.

RAFIQHum ek din nahin thay.Pata tha iihoga. Ihaan koi azaadi nahin hai,bhalle hum kisi aur ki azaadi keliye lad rahein hain.

Rafiq's tirade is interrupted as the trainer walks in.

TRAINERShahid, tum fit hone ke baad fieldke 10 chakkar lagaoge, roz.

He leaves. Shahid's look tells us that he cant care less.

31 31EXT. CAMP, TRAINING GROUND - LATE EVENING - 1993

The group is playing volley ball as Shahid runs around theground. Shahid thinking that nobody is watching him startstaking small rounds. The trainer however is keenly observinghim from his office.

The trainer comes out and yells.

TRAINERShahid.

32 32INT. CAMP, TRAINER'S OFFICE - LATE EVENING - 1993

Shahid is a little anxious as he gets in.

TRAINERKaise ho?

SHAHIDJanaab, thik..

TRAINERBahut Accha. Jawaan mard kotandurust hona chahiye.

(Looks at the wounds)Zakhm sukh gaya tumhara.

Shahid looks surprised by the soft tone. He was thinking hewould get a run down for faking his punishment. The trainerasks him to sit. He sits down.

As he enters he sees his office flooded with people. A numberof males, females and children.

He looks at them as they look back helplessly. A femalestands and follows him to his cabin. As she walks in,Shahid's eyes focus on the children. One of them is beingslapped by her mother and the baby starts crying.

The others in the crowd try to speak to Shahid about theirarrested family members and about the police. They make adin and Shahid tries to calm them down.


Shahid is in the living room reviewing some papers as hisphone rings.

Shahid reaches office. The caller, PARANJPE and two othermen are waiting for him.

Shahid walks in signalling the 3 men to follow him inside..

Inder closes the cabin door after Shahid enters and sitsdown at the entrance.

Three gun shots are heard.

The men walk out as the Inder stands frozen.

The door is half open as we see Shahid's face lying on thetable in a pool of blood.

On one side of the door we read the paper that Shahid hadstuck when he moved into the office. It reads :

About 50,000 people are in Shahid's funeral procession. Arifis heading the procession along with Shahid's other brothers.

The entire procession offers prayers as Shahid's coffin isplaced on the side.

We see Shahid's youngest brother Khalid in court.

He looks on as the judge pronounces the acquittal of FahimAnsari.

The judge ends the acquittal with a brief but emotionalcondolence to Shahid.
