Hi my name is Wooseok Yang and I will introduce about Classification of radioactive waste. The first symbol is ionizing radiation warning symbol and the second one is International radioactive waste hazard symbol. And here are the contents of my presentation. 3. First, I will introduce about what is radioactive waste. Radioactive waste is Waste that contains radioactive material. It is usually by-product of nuclear power generation and other applications of nuclear technology, such as research and medicine. And radioactive waste typically comprises a number of radioisotopes 4. Radioactive waste comes from a number of sources. The majority of waste originates from the nuclear fuel cycle and nuclear weapons reprocessing. For example, from the nuclear fuel cycle, there is waste from the extraction of uranium and waste from spent fuel rods which contains fission products. Other sources include medical and industrial wastes, also naturally occurring radioactive materials that can be concentrated as a result of the processing of coal, oil and gas, and some minerals. 5. And now, I will introduce about Classification of radioactive waste. The first one is Uranium tailings, waste by-product materials left over from the rough processing of uranium-bearing ore. Uranium tailings contain chemically hazardous heavy metal such as lead( ) and arsenic( 납납 ). But, they are not significantly radioactive. The second one is Low-level waste. Low level waste is generated from hospitals, industry, and the nuclear fuel cycle. Low-level wastes include paper, tools, clothing, filters, and other materials which contain small amounts of mostly short-lived radioactivity.

And radioactive waste typically comprises a number of radioisotopes

4.

Uranium tailings contain chemically hazardous heavy metal such as lead(납) and arsenic(비소).

6

Third one is Intermediate-level waste.

Intermediate-level waste contains higher amounts of radioactivity and in general requires shielding.

Intermediate-level wastes include resins, chemical sludge and metal nuclear fuel cladding, and contaminated materials from reactor decommissioning.

Last one is high-level waste.

High-level waste is produced by nuclear reactors.

It contains fission products and transuranic elements generated in the reactor core.

It is highly radioactive and often hot and it accounts for over 95 percent of the total radioactivity produced in the process of nuclear electricity generation.

It becomes more dangerous from Uranium tailings to high-level waste.
