AUTHOR PROFILE

RUTH OHI is one of the most popular, prolific, and accessible children’s picture book authors/illustrators in Canada today. She has illustrated over 50 books and has also been the author of 18 of these, including the Chicken, Pig, Cow series, Fox and Squirrel and Shh! My Brother’s Napping. A graduate of the Ontario College of Art & Design, Ruth uses mainly watercolours and inks, and is beginning to incorporate digital elements into her artwork. Ruth is passionate about working with young people through art, creativity and books.

Add your own scribble—add arms, legs, faces. What can you turn these shape combos into with a few scribbles. Do you see an animal? An object? An imaginary beast? Perhaps something not yet invented? Flip over the paper and start with your own shape creations.

Cut out the shapes. Or use construction paper to make your own shapes. Arrange and glue shapes on another piece of paper to create characters, objects, faces. Add your scribbles - use crayons to add scribble details like faces, wheels, arms & legs.

A CLASSROOM ACTIVITY – SCRIBBLE AWAY!

Turn scribbling into a classroom activity and see what your students can create together! On a large sheet of paper have on students start the scribble and draw whatever they choose. In order to keep the activity moving in a timely fashion, specify to students that their contribution should be a scribble—therefore the pencil (or writing utensil of choice) should not leave the page. This will ensure every student has a chance to contribute to the drawing.
