Ascreenplayisascriptforafilmsupplementedwithalistof“shots,”whichareessentiallyblueprintsforwheretoplacethecameraandwhattopointitat.Knowingthisvisualvocabularycanhelpyoubetterenvisiontheactionofascreenplay.
TypeofShot Definition
LongShot
(AKAWideShot)
Inalongshotthesubjectoftheshotisvisiblefromadistance,withtheprimaryfocusbeingontheenvironment.Thistypeofshotestablishesthelocationandcontextforthesceneandisknownasan“establishingshot”.
FullShot
Afull-shotisatypeoflongshotthatincludesasubject'sentirebody(headtofeet).Inafullshotthecameraappearstobemuchclosertothesubject(s)oftheshot,resultinginanarrowingoffocus.Thisisaidedbythefactthatmuchofthesurroundingenvironmentiscutoutoftheframe.Fullshots,byvirtueofthename,allowtheentiresubjecttobeseen,head-to-toe.
MediumShot(MED.)
Amediumshotisaconventionalcamerashotfilmedfromamediumdistance;althoughitisdifficulttopreciselydefine,itusuallyreferstoahumanfigurefromthewaist(orknees)up.
