Key facts about cervical cancer:• 500.000 new cases of cervical cancer each year
• 270.000 women will die and more than 85% of these deaths are in low and middle income countries. These deaths can be avoided
• Cervical cancer is caused by sexually acquired infection with HPV (Human PapillomaVirus). Most people are infected with HPV shortly after the outset of sexual activity.
Around the world, a woman dies every two minutes from cervical cancer.

Solutions:• Prevention of the infection by vaccination against HPV: in girls between the
age 9 – 12, before any sexual activity.
• VIA*: a simple cost effective method that detects abnormal areas in the cervix followed by cryotherapy to eradicate the lesion detected.
• HPV testing: detects the presence of high risk HPV types (16, 18) but doesn’t necessarily detect a lesion.
• Screening by cytology “Pap smears” has been the standard screening procedure for nearly 50 years in developed countries and has proven efficient in reducing the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer. Cytology detects lesions and allows for a precise diagnosis.
