Figure Ground! In this aerial photo taken in Vienden, Luxembourg, the castle is easily discerned as the figure in the foreground, with the ground (background) taking the viewer’s eyes to the horizon, using the various hills as measured increments. The aerial view allows the viewer to see a greater distance, with details becoming increasingly blurred until fading into a horizon of blue.!!!Photo by Ashtora

SymmetryThe ornamentations carved into this arched entrance to a cathedral in Prague illustrate perfect symmetry. Each arch bears its own unique design comprised of a series of sculpted features uniform in size and design. Balance and symmetry are carried out in each archway and pattern, all lifting the eye upward. The entire entrance is carved from the same marble, completing the sense of similarity and continuity.!!Notice the endless intricacies, the four uniform pillars at the bases of the arches and the gargoyles above the arches. !!Photo by Ashtora

ClosureThese symmetrical diamond shapes form a figure-ground example through the use of contrasting woods. !!The incomplete diamonds suggest that we mentally “close” or complete the image with the missing information.!!Photo by Ashtora

ClosureOur mind completes these blue circles even though the white square obscures their full image.!!Photo from: http://painting-course.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/closure.gif!

Similarity The artist who painted these three ostriches comprising the fresco on the wall of a Prague hotel, Hotel U Tří Pštrosů (Hotel of The Three Ostriches), indicated the three are a trio, as they are similar in size and color, and are grouped closely together. Symmetry is observed in the distance between them.!!Photo by Ashtora!

Cultural Meaning Associated with

Color: South Sudanese Flag~ !

South Sudanese wave their national flag. Each color represents a specific cultural meaning. Black=blackness of the people; White = the peace they long for; Red= their blood shed in war; green= the richness of their soil and their agriculture; the blue background behind the gold star = their beloved Blue Nile river; and the gold star stands for the unity of their people.

Balance:In this image of sheep being herded at Liberty Park this morning, Sept. 1, 2015, the border collie on the right provides balance for the small herd on the left. The contrasting colors of black and white in both elements provide an additional element of balance.~ !!Photo by Ashtora

Contrast:In this image of a black and white border collie, we feel the contrast and beauty of his distinctive black and white patterns.~!!Photo by Ashtora

Emphasis:In this image of a pair of quail in the neighborhood, I feel the emphasis is shared by the pair and the morning shadows.~!!Photo by Ashtora

Rhythm:In this image, taken on Silver Spring Lake in Park City, I see rhythms in the grasses, trees and recreational vehicles on the beach. The combination feels a little like smooth jazz to me.~ !!Photo by Ashtora

Unity:In this photo of an Aspen forest, I see unity demonstrated in the closeness, shared features and direction, which serve to create a unified energy. ~ !!Photo by Ashtora
