    What is scrap metal?

recyclable metals left over from everyindustrial production

old metal, broken, worn out, defaced orpartly manufactured articles made of metallic wastes

    Uses of scrap metal

The scrap industry-processes more than 145 million tons of

recyclable material each year into rawmaterial feedstockcontributed $65 billion in 2006 and is one of the few contributing positively to the U.S.

balance of tradeexporting $15.7 billion in scrap commoditiesin 2006.

    SCRAP IRON CARRIER

It is a vehicle to carry scrap iron. In orderto carry huge amount of scrap iron we areintroducing a new type of scrap iron carrier.

    Background & Inspiration

Scrap is often taken to a wrecking yardwhere it is processed for later melting intonew products.A wrecking yard may allow customers to

browse their lot and purchase items .workers required to supply all of their own

tools and labor to extract parts and carryscrap metalsWorkers face injury to carry scrap metals.

    background & inspiration

In the scrap metal industry a great potentialexists for accidents in which a hazardousmaterial present in scrap metal[example: radioactivity in scrap metal inGoinia causes both death and injury.]

So to avoid injuries and environmentaldamage we need scrap metal carrier.

    Objective

To-make the sorting easy in a wrecking yard.

ensure the safety of the customers in awrecking yard.avoid the environmental damage such asradioactivity.

carry the scrap metals in an organized way.separate the metals and non-metals.increase the rate of sorting metals.

    Design

The design can be divided into three steps:

    Mechanical part

    Electrical part

    Controller part

    Problems Encountered & Solution

At first we tried to use a moving platformbut to ensure smooth movement we use astationary wooden platform with a ballbearing.

Problems arise when we use rotating solidarm;so we replace it with a truss.

We were not getting maximum flux from thesolenoid; so we bend the two ends to derivemaximum flux.

    Applications & Commercialization:

    We can use it in-

    the wrecking yard.

    the ship breaking yard.

    the car repairing industries.

the radioactive zones to sort iron.

    Future Development

It can be designed in such a way that it cancollect and deliver scrap metal more thanone time at a single rotation.

Further improvement can be made todevelop three dimensional movement.

If the scrap iron is too heavy, then thesolenoid consumes more power andgenerates more heat.

    .future development

Further improvement can be done so thatthe carrier itself can find scrap metal; anddeliver it to the desired place.

To make the sorting more perfect, sensorscan be used.

Servo motor can be used to generate morespeed to the truss.

    future development

Controlling through wireless system can beintroduced.

Variable counter weight can be used tobalance the arm for different weight of scrapiron.

Weight sorting device can be introduced tofigure out the total scrap iron carried.

    Merits:

This project is very much cost effective.

The system is fully automated. So itrequires less man power and reducescost.

This system is precise since there is nohuman controlled device .

    .merits

It is more efficient and fast ,thusreducing working hour.

Materials used in this project are locallyavailable.Since we are using solenoids for liftingthe scrap iron, they can be of irregularshapes to derive maximummagnetization.

    Conclusion

We really enjoyed doing our project.Ithelped a lot to enhance our concept

about many things and apprehend thatthere is a lot of difference betweentheory and in practice. For unavailability of required quality

components, our inexperience,we couldnot accomplish our desired goal. But wethink the students of upcoming batcheswill try to improve this project.
