ROCHESTER, NY (April 24, 2019) -- A groundball on the infield plated a run in the bottom of the 10th inning, as Ryan Lavarnway’s throw to the plate was not in time to get Zander Wiel, and the Rochester Red Wings came away with a win in the series finale against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, 4-3.

The game moved into extra innings thanks to a late charge from SWB that saw them send seven men to the plate in the top of the 9th inning. The frame began with a walk to Billy Burns, who stood at second base following a groundout by Matt Lipka. The next man up was Cliff Pennington, who doubled into the left field corner to score Burns and bring the RailRiders within a run, 3-2. After a Trey Amburgey pinch-hit single pushed Pennington to third base, the RailRiders send another pinch hitter to the plate in Lavarnway. His RBI single tied the game and set the table for Rochester to walk-off with the win.

The loss overshadows one of the best pitching performances of the season by SWB, in which David Hale went 6.1 innings and allowed just 2two earned runs while striking out nine batters. Cale Coshow was ticketed with his first loss of the season, as he allowed the pace-of-play runner to score, but tossed a total 2.1 innings of relief in which he didn’t allow and earned run.

Offensively, The top of the order had a couple bright spots including Gosuke Katoh (2-for-3, BB), but it was Cliff Pennington who led the 10-hit performance by the RailRiders bats. He finished 3-for-4 with a double, home run and 2 RBI after entering the game 3-for-his-last-31.

A MODEST STRETCH: INF/OF Ryan McBroom enters the series against the Syracuse Mets with a 5G hitting streak, looking to track down INF Mike Ford and his season-best 9G hitting streak at some point during this homestand. Over the 5G, McBroom has one hit in each, going 5-for-18 (.278 AVG) raising his average from .261 to .266.

TRIPLE THE DOUBLE TROUBLE: The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders did not play a single game to completion over the weekend in Buffalo against the Bisons and just had their series-opener against the Syracuse Mets suspended after a half inning Friday night. They entered last weekend’s series with a scheduled doubleheader set for Saturday at 1:05 p.m. which was supposed to be the second one of the young season and now they will officially be playing in their second doubleheader Saturday against the Mets. The three postponements against the Bisons are all on the schedule for three dates later in the year when the two teams lock antlers June 3, June 5 and June 27.

MANIA ON MANIA: As the ripples of Vladimir Guererro Jr.’s arrival at PNC Field finally subsided on the banks of Lake Scranton (with his heroics Friday night in Toronto for his MLB debut) and the excitement of Tim Tebow has now descended upon NEPA. The 31-year old former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL QB made his Triple-A debut with the Syracuse Mets earlier in the season. He enters Friday’s series opener batting .164 (9-for-55) with 3 2B, 5 RBI and 6 BB (.246 OBP) -- still in search for his first Triple-A home run. He did not have a plate appearance in the first inning of Friday’s game, but is expected to come to bat third in the top of the 2nd inning when action resumes Saturday afternoon.

RUNNING LIKE CRAZY: Last season’s version of the RailRiders recorded 49 SB on 79 tries (62.0%) which was 11 fewer SB than any other team in the league (Lehigh Valley & Gwinnett: 60 SB), and by percentage was the second worst in the league (Louisville, 60.0%). That said, last April was a strong month for SWB on the base paths, going 14-for-15 in SB but only 35-for-64 (54.6%) over the final 115G of the season (1 SB every 3.3G from May 1st onward). The 2019 RailRiders are off to a torrid start, having gone 19-for-22 (86.3%) over the first 18G of the year, including 2 more SB Thursday. Leading the way is OF Billy Burns who is 7-for-7 SB which puts him 1 SB off the IL lead.

STRIKEOUT RATE: The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders enter Friday’s game against the Syracuse Mets 5th in most strikeouts (179 K) as a team in the International League but the 3rd-highest strikeout rate (179 K in 150.1 IP; 10.7 K/9) behind the league-leading Rochester Red Wings (218 K in 167.0 IP; 11.7 K/9). The RailRiders enter their series vs. Syracuse ranked 8th in the IL in ERA at 4.73 which is behind the Chiefs who rank 2nd in the league at a 3.72 RA. Last season, the RailRiders ranked 5th in ERA (3.71), 3rd in K (1,179) and 2nd in K/9 (Durham: 9.4; Pawtucket: 9.0; SWB: 8.9). A few games into the series and that number had jumped to a 5.25 ERA for SWB before consecutive strong pitching performances dropped it back to sub-5.00.
