St. Catherine of Alexandria

Saint Catherine glorified God by an illustrious confession of the faith of Christ at Alexandria, Egypt under the Emperor Valerius Maximinus II. It is said that St. Catherine belonged to a patrician family, a pagan. But she was converted by a vision of our Lady and the holy child. She then de-voted herself to learn studies in Christian philosophy. Saint Catherine was in truth the flower of

Alexandria nobility. Maximinus, one of the several rival emperors who struggled for supremacy during his persecu-tion of the Christians sent for Catherine only 18 years old then and of great beauty, who went to re-buke him for tyranny. She did not fear to throw her rank, her learning and her eloquence on the side of the oppressed church. The emperor could not answer her arguments against his gods. He then sum-moned fifty philosophers to oppose her. However, these philosophers were convinced by the learning of the Christian girl and were therefore burned to death by the infuriated emperor. He tried to seduce Catherine with an offer of a consort’s crown but she refused to accept it with her indignant refusal; she was sent into exile.

Emperor Maximinus went to inspect a camp. In his return, he discovered that his wife Faustina and an officer had gone to see Catherine out of curiosity and had been converted together with two hundred soldiers of the guard. They accordingly were all killed. According to tradition, when she re-turned she was put to death in 310 by means of engine fitted with a spiked wheel, hence our “Cath-erine Wheel”. When she was placed in it, her bonds were miraculously loosened; the wheel brake and its spikes flew off killing many of the onlookers. Then she was beheaded and from her veins flowed a milk-liquid. However, there are variations of the story.

Thus, the Catherine wheel, the sword, the head, and the laurel leaves, which go with the image of Saint Catherine, are symbolic of that ghostly event. She was tortured in a wheel and was beheaded with a sword. The head of the man was that of Porphyrius, a high official and the leader of the two hundred soldiers of the guard. The laurel leaves symbolizes her martyrdom.

The legend contends that her body was carried by angels to Mount Sinai where a church and a monastery were built. But the legend was not known to the earliest pilgrims of the said mountain.

In 527 Emperor Justinian built a monastery for the hermits of this place. The supposed body of Saint Catherine was said to have been taken there in the eight or ninth century when it has born her name.

She is now venerated as a patroness of maidens and women students of philosophy; of preach-ers and apologists; of wheelwrights, millers and others. Her feast day is November 25.

St. Catherine Parochial School, Leon, Iloilo envisions itself as an agent of evangeliza-tion towards promoting Catholic education and integral formation of the learners in the Christian community in the light of the church’s love and preference for the young.

MISSION

In view of the above vision, St. Catherine Parochial School is committed to:

1. Assist young men and women towards their total development with emphasis on moral con-science and maturity and faith;

2. Promote quality and excellent academic and alternative learning programs pursuant to consti-tutional norm, national development goals and guidelines set by the Catholic Church.

3. Strengthen religion as the core of the curriculum;

4. Recognize co-partnership among the laity, religious and clergy, and

5. Exercise dynamic educational leadership, characterized by creative fidelity, unselfish service, and responsible stewardship grounded in faith and spirituality.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVESThe St. Catherine Parochial School as the educational arm of the Archdiocese of Jaro is tasked to promote authentic and quality Christian Catholic education. To achieve this goal, it is guided by these objectives:

1. To strengthen and revitalize the school as useful service areas and channels in commu-nicating and servicing the needs and concerns of the faculty, staff, students, pupils, parents and the community;

2. To expand active membership and nurture the parochial schools capacity to provide a deepened faith, leadership and service to those enrolled in these schools;

3. To modernize its educational services in order to meet the challenges of poverty and il-literacy; technology and communication, continued survival and autonomy of Catholic schools, inter-national globalization and the “new evangelization” challenges of PCP II.

4. To become dynamic agent towards formation of Basic Ecclesial Communities through focused Christian value formation in school activities.

In December 1907, the second band of Mill Hill Missionaries arrived in the Philippines.One of them was Rev.Fr. Everard Van de Kamp, the founder of Saint Catherine Parochial School .It was the policy of the superior to put older fathers into the new parishes. Thus, Fr. Kamp was called down from Pandan, Antique to become the Parish Priest of Leon in

October, 1910 (p.13).

“…he has scored many a victory over vice and indifference in the parish, foremost among his activities however is his attendance to the many sick calls even in the remotest villages, where no priest had ever walked before him. In the Spanish times it was the custom for the priest to be carried by four men on a hammock when he was called to minister to sick people in the village”(pp.13-14).

In 1915, he established the Parochial School to counteract the influence of the Protestant school, which had been established in the town. Parochial Schools were never looked upon favorably by the public authorities then. They always considered them competitions to their public schools (p.33).

During the 1940s, the government opened extension classes. More teachers were hired. Some of the teachers in the Parochial Schools resigned to teach in extension classes because public school authorities could offer them a higher salary. Most of the children preferred public schools and it was only their parents who made them stay in the parochial schools. This left the parochial school with few students so that two classes had to be combined under one teacher so as to reduce expense (p.33).Parochial Schools were always dependent upon the resources of the parish priest. If the parish had no means of his own to support the school, the Mission shouldered the burden. The natural consequence was that several schools had to close down, if not all the classes, at least some of the parochial school.

“But there is one exception LEON PAROCHIAL SCHOOL …… this Fr. Van de Kamp, when parish priest of Leon, added to his primary an intermediate high school course, in order to counteract the influ-ence of the Protestant intermediate and high schools, which had been established in Leon. There is no doubt about it that is Protestant school in the Catholic town of Leon was founded for the sake of proselytizing. An active parish priest like Fr. Kamp could not brook the idea of his people being misled by means of Protestant institution. Although he could not afford it, he built a schoolhouse for the four years high school at an enormous expenditure, relying upon a certain promise of help from the United States. However, that promise never materialized and the consequence was that Fr. Kamp contracted a huge debt at the Procure. But in the course of a few years that debt was paid off, every cent of it. The Protestant School went bankrupt and ceased to exist, and today we have flourishing intermediate and high school in Leon, perhaps the only parochial school that has any future.”(p.34).

My warmest greeting to this year’s graduating class of St. Catherine Parochial School. This day marks a momentous and memorable event for the students, their parents and teachers.

For the students, it marks the culmination of many years of hard work in their relentless pursuit of knowledge, the knowledge that will enable them to face more difficult challenges in the coming years.

For the parents, it means another obstacle hurdled and the anticipation of a brighter future for their children. And for our teachers, it signifies a job well done and the pride of seeing another batch of bright wide-eyed students eager to face the world after long years under their guidance and care.

This graduation honors each one of you for your success. And as we watch our young gradu-ates move on to face new task and tribulation, we comfort our selves with the thought that we have done all that we could to prepare them well to overcome the adversity that lies ahead. I call on all our young graduates to recognize their accomplishment and I ask them to make us all proud of what they can accomplish from this day forward.

There is no limit to what the Filipino youth can do.

The concept of education focuses on the objectives anchored on the belief that the nation could be developed by producing quality graduates in as many disciplines as it possibly can. Graduates who can surpass the crises of the country, and who can emerge as winners despite the challenging econo-my.

Kudos to the 2009 graduates! Your journey towards excellence never stops when you receive your diploma. This is the dawn of a new era of perseverance and diligence. Keep going! Our country needs youths who are imbued with desirable virtues and sound values. We hope that we produce citi-zens who are honest and God-fearing, for this is what our country needs to progress and to be known again. May the theme “My Education: My Contribution to the Future” enlighten you to take roads for success and for the betterment of our nation.

Dear Graduates,

It is with great pride and honor to congratulate you--the graduating students of St. Catherine Parochial School on this very momentous day in your lives. I, too, will be happy to see you walk up the stage as you receive your diploma and you will find that your lives have been irrevocably changed, for the better, by emerging into one of the greatest distinction that is becoming alumni of St. Catherine Parochial School.

I firmly believe that any man’s finest hour—the greatest fulfillment of all that holds dear is that moment when he has worked his heart out in good cause and lies exhausted victorious on life’s battle-field. For those of you who don’t have any work to do between now and graduation; keep it to your-self.

Finally, as you leave the portals of your beloved alma mater, may you not look at the time that you spent here as a mere investment for a great future. Continue to be involved in the life of the school and search for ways to keep the connection strong.

The past three yeas or my stay at SCPS had not been without challenges. A number of realities, events, and exercise of responsibility placed me exactly in the midst of life’s learning process journey-ing with the teachers and the young learners themselves. Each day in school with these young people awakens an inner realization that it is their life being entrusted to us. Since then every start of the school year, I would continually seek answer to the question: What do we want our pupils and students to become when they’re done with us? What is really education for them to live a life of purpose and meaning?

An author’s insight from three decades experience of being an educator is helping me crystal-lize the answer to the recurrent questions. He wrote:

“When I watch kids walk into the building on their first day of schools, I think about what I want them to be like when they walk out on their last day. I also think about what I want them to be like on the day I bump them in the supermarket, ten or twenty years later. Over the course of three decades watching kids walk into my schools, I have decided that I want hem to; be life-long learners, be passionate, be ready to take risks, be able to problem-solve and think critically, be able to look at things differently, be able to work independently and with others, be creative, care and to give back to their community, persevere, have integrity and self-respect, have moral courage, be able to use the world around them well, speak well, write well, read well, and work well with number, truly enjoy their life and work. To me, these are the real goals of education.”

Such wise yearnings stand unquestionably ladened with values of self-realization, thus, learners become fully alive human beings who help to create a society that serves the common good. Drawing out the best from every learner, a true education forms the human person with respect to his ultimate goal at the same time to the good of the society of which he is a member and in whose responsibilities, as an adult he will share. In a curriculum with Christian faith as the unifying core, learners are helped to bring the struggle of education asking for God’s help while making every good effort.

As graduation day highlights the events of this school year for our Grade VI pupils and Fourth Year students, may the yearnings of their minds and hearts be drawn constantly towards the theme that embraces life’s meaning and purpose: “My Education: My Contribution to the Future.”

High school life is the most spectacular escapade of life’s expeditions. For it is a voyage of thousands of memorable experiences and memories we’ve encountered on our sailing in this broad ocean called life. It was a time filled with memories which are worth-remembering, neither can they be detached nor diminished by the passing years…but indeed, leave a remarkable mark in our lives.

Among other batches which have passed to and fro the portals of SCPS, batch ’09 has its own share of glory, mischief, ad-ventures and misadventures. This batch has nonetheless carved their own mark in the history of SCPS. But, how did it all start?

S.Y. 2005-2006

JUNE 4, 2005. First day of school. The first day of my high school life rather and my first flag ceremony in my new school, the Saint Catherine Parochial School. The ambience compensates to the mood of the day.

I was standing in our designated line near the portals, wearing a white, marine- collared blouse matched with a cravat and a blue and white checkered skirt paired with new white socks and black shoes. I stood there waiting for the flag ceremony to begin along with my former friends and classmates in elementary. I belonged to section 1 of our batch, the I-St. Rose of Lima under the advisory of Ms. Precila Guillergan while the other one section is the I- St. Gemma with their adviser Ms. Cicelle Ortega. That time our school was under the administration of the former director and principal, Rev. Fr. Juan Q. Parreñas.

The first day of school seemed to be an early acquaintance party--making friends with other sets of personalities. New friendships were entrenched and old ones were being restored and started once again. The overwhelming approach and the heartwarming welcome of the whole faculty and staff and our fellow Catherinians made us feel that we are really welcomed. But then, I found myself in a place of total mutation. Imagine, it was like moving out from an old house after six years to a new one. I found it quite discomforting… everything looked peculiar… the milieu and the whole tapestry. Every-body was undergoing major adjustments and adaptations to his new ecosystem.

The first day of school was filled with big surprises and early revelations. Alvin Rosal surprised us when he unveiled his real identity. Aside from our personal biographies, our talents were also introduced… we discovered some extra skills and attributes one has. But it was the talents of Chrislyn Joy Cagalitan, Khristyl Meij Patubo and Leony Cajilig which had been greatly distinguished as each of them deliberately sang their musical pieces.

JULY 2005. Nutrition month celebration. This was the first time we experienced “Blind date.” Love is in the air… Dif-ferent love teams and lovers were being determined during the event. Some of our classmates cried for it was their first time. We’re really innocent then. Surprisingly, at a distance…we saw April Mae Ambonan crying while sitting beside our kiosk. She was forced by one of the student police officers to have a blind date with Gee Van Talero. “Hu…Hu...Hu...! Hindi gani ako mag-blind date kay hindi pa pwede, karaan ako ni Nanay!” she exclaimed. That was so ridiculous. Just like April, Khristyl Meij Patubo also cried when she refused a blind date with Clarence Capaducio. Both of their “blind date” arrangements were deferred.

AUGUST 2005. Our Feast day! We celebrated our first-ever feast day, the feast day of our patron, St. Rose of Lima. It was just a simple affair. We really enjoyed every fun games and foods being served and prepared by each group. We’ve also taken some pictures together with Ma’am Bing2x. However, Precious and Angel doubled the fun when they entertained us by putting heavy make-up’s on their faces. Angel Lee Tribujenia won the “voodoo dolls” competition.

Graduates ‘09 SEPTEMBER 2005. Temperature rising…adrenalin pumping… the heat is in the air! as clusters of cheerers shrieked for their own teams. Everybody…couldn’t help but hold on to their breathes every time the game reaches its peak. Every-body was eager to bring home the bacon! We fought our first fearless battle cry against the taller and mightier opponents. We never let our flaws and physical deficiencies dampen and hinder us from achieving our first triumphs! We won the battle together with the seniors in the basketball girls’ championship round. Andrian Neil Calopez also garnered the fourth place during the marathon. It was the team of John Robert Almirante, Clint Kevin Cabillon and Runard Calantoc who won the championship game against the seniors in Sepak Takraw. However, the indisputable… Gee Van Talero defeated all his op-ponents, having an approximately 500 number of “kicks.” Obviously, he’s the champion.

OCTOBER 2005. MMK presents “The Felt Tip Pen.” Alvin and I had a small misunderstanding about my lost felt tip pen. It was him whom I blamed. But then, our simple argument turned into a shattering exchange of incensed words… voices were rising higher and higher. Both of us were beginning to reach our boiling points. Until, Alvin became abrasive with my repeated accusations which soon led his emotions to erupt and explode. “Baydi nga naan ko Alvin, hmmp..!.” I said. Honestly, I was just kidding. I didn’t mean what I’ve said. But, maybe Alvin took it seriously. He immediately skimmed through his wallet, pulled out some of his money and quickly slapped it unto my mouth. I think it was Php50. “Teh…uh...uh...lamuna kwarta mu!” Alvin retorted. For a moment, I thought everything kept still; all eyes were looking towards us. I felt so humiliated. I couldn’t help but cry. We were sent to the guidance office for the first time. But, during our counseling with Mrs. Cano…Alvin cried a lot. Meanwhile, he began to complain about his difficulty in breathing. He was sent immediately to the nearest clinic. Some speculated that it was an asthma attack but I guess Alvin had just faked it.

NOVEMBER 2005. Tensions and tautness conquered the stage as each section performed their Skitsayawit presen-tations. Everyone gave their best acting skills and garnished themselves with colorful costumes and garments. Everybody was prepared. It was visible through their creative props and other designs. Unexpectedly, we won the first place. With just a limited time for practices and rush preparations, we really thought that we’ll be at the bottom list. And it was also another victory for us when the best actress award was given to our dearest classmate, Khristyl Meij Patubo as she delineated the role of Sisa.

DECEMBER 9, 2005. Foundation Day! The evening was filled with luster and lights as everybody anticipated the most awaited part of the Foundation Day, the Coronation Night. With a Muslim inspired motif, the royal court wore their outfits elegantly. We’re proud to say that our very own classmate, Rizzel Ann Samontanes was crowned as the Foundation Queen with his majesty, King Sammy John Torrefranca, the Foundation King. However, it was Ian Mhel Pascua from the class of I – St. Gemma who became the 1st Prince. Both of them are the pride of the freshmen.

JANUARY 2006. It has been a week since the Alumni Homecoming ended; classes resumed. But still, our school underwent systematic changes. Tents were being removed one after the other. One late afternoon, during our vacant pe-riod, while some of us were busy doing our own leisure activities inside our classroom, four of our classmates namely: Clar-ence, Mark Anthony, Alvenedick and Reydel were also busy picking some bamboo sticks and other wood scraps left scat-tering on the field near the basketball court. It was then, when an idea came up their minds. They thought of using those bamboos in playing “espa-espadahay.” They were enjoying their trysts so much that they seemed oblivious of what’s around them. They never noticed that they had caught the attention of Fr. Parreñas already. Their enjoyment was interrupted by a familiar voice. They received another sermon from Fr. Parreñas . He punished them by their own sword-makeshift toys made of bamboo. It wasn’t that bad after all but the four boys were greatly shamed.

Before the month ended…another accident occurred. It happened before our recess time. The boys were playing basketball in the court. It was a close fight between the two teams. One of our classmates met an accident when he slumped over the ball after his intense kick off. It was Alexan Cadiz who got a minor injury on his head. We’re all alarmed because of what we have seen. He was then sent to our school clinic. As a consequence, Ma’am Cabarang scolded us. From then on, we began to tease Alexan as “Boy Buka” because of that accident.

FEBRUARY 2006. Mr. Randy Gumban’s birthday! It was a very special day for all of us for it was the birthday of our beloved subject teacher in Science. We planned to prepare a surprise greeting and presentation for him. Together as a class, we drew up the entire plan. We cut some strips of colored papers for confettis and placed it inside the balloon which was hung over the door. We went out of the classroom and hid ourselves behind the walls of our room. When Sir Gumban entered our room, Leony immediately deflated the balloon causing the confetti to drop on Sir Gumban’s head. We ran hur-riedly inside the classroom while singing the birthday song. Aside from that, we also sang some of his most favorite songs as a present for him. It was just simple but I know he really appreciated what we did.

We celebrated our 12th Youth Day with the theme: “We Have Come to Worship Him.” Throngs of youngsters from nearby high schools gathered once again for this great Christian gathering.

MARCH 2006. Fr. Parreñas’ birthday as well as his despidida party. We had prepared a number of special presenta-tions as a tribute for his farewell. Every one of us was poignant and very emotional for Fr. Parreñas will be leaving us the next school year.

Our freshmen year ended….We exercised our recognition rites. Among those who received medals for academic excellence were: Aura Anne Sermonia, Angel Lee Tribujenia, Chrislyn Joy Cagalitan, Emmylou Mujal, Dante Cabarles and Hannah Marie Anotado.

S.Y 2006 – 2007

JUNE 2006 brought great changes. Rev. Fr. Juan Q. Parreñas, our director/ principal transferred to another parish in Sara, Iloilo. However, another priest took over his place--Rev. Fr. Emmanuel G. Tuberada from a priest from Guimbal, Iloilo. Everybody is looking forward to a better school year. We’re now taking some few steps towards our progress. Likewise, some of my classmates, Precious Mae Sustento and Cherie Mae Catalino transferred to other schools while others were moved to the other section. But then, others took their place. We had our new classmate, Rhaycel Pasaylo who had crossed the miles to find her fate at SCPS community. Florence Palomo and Jenette Cabunoc were the transferees of II- St. John Bosco.

We were happy to say, that we’re now certified sophisticated sophomores! This year was the year of all years. Who would be able to forget this year, guys? Oh! Come on... Nobody can ever forget the year when we truly experienced au-thentic freedom. Our timidity and innocence have already died down. It was when our real colors began to show off. New entities were born. We’re no longer children anymore. Bye-bye pa-tweetums, welcome pasaways!

Just try to observe us during class hours, especially during Ms. Cabanilla (Filipino) and Ms. Calceña’s (Araling Pan-lipunan) lectures. Each of us has his own separate world, doing his own business that is while classes are going on (Sorry guid mga ma’ams). Some are texting, though cell phones are strictly prohibited. While others are also busy with their classroom-based salon, which offers free make-up, hairstyling, manicure, and pedicure…whatever. There was Leony Cajilig who was also busy with his polvoron enterprise…everyone is craving to have a taste of them. On the other hand, some of our boys were having their mini-concert at the back of our shelves in order to hide themselves from being caught playing their guitars. See how pasaway we are?!

And who can forget the many afternoons when we would pour liberally on the floor of our classroom fabulous amounts of baby powder and skid and spin on it playfully!? Well, it was one brilliant but wayward idea of Eisinhower Buen-dia who made the suggestion. That’s why Ms. Cabanilla, our adviser, always got mad at us. For how many times she would tell us to apply floor wax and scrub the floor yet, we always keep on repeating our favorite offense. Pasaway guid!?

But wait…how about our own version of “Deal or No Deal” during our vacant periods? “26 case come on, bring down the cases” says Alvin Rosal, our local version of Kris Aquino. It was then when we would come up the stairs while bringing our briefcases (our red folders). We used the compact powder as an alternative for the “press button.” However, we used the blackboard eraser as our cell phone to communicate with the Banker (Leony Cajilig).

Another unforgettable episode was during our Wednesday mass. We were very noisy inside the church. We were not listening to the sermon anymore instead we were just making noisy conversations with one another. Several teachers have called our attention and warned us to stop talking but, still our conversations didn’t simmer down, and it became more intense and annoying. Right after the mass, we were scolded by Ms. Cabanilla. The whole faculty especially Fr. Tu-berada was really disappointed and angry with what we have done inside the church. Mrs. Cano went to our classroom, “Andaman niyo lang 2nd year, ma-public apology gid kamu to sa tunga!” said Mrs. Cano. The next Monday after the flag ceremony, we had our public apology at the stage, in front of the entire SCPS community. We haven’t prepared any speech to say. We just stood up on stage and that was it! Khristyl Meij Patubo was our spokesperson in behalf of our class. We felt so embarrassed that moment, but some of us seemed insincere.

SEPTEMBER 2006. Sports fest opened again its doorway towards the aspiring athletes, who wanted to defend their championship titles and of course, another opportunity for those who are eager to take their vengeance once again. Our power and strengths zoomed in. We’re now ready to face our opponents courageously. We’ve garnered a lot of cham-pionship titles which led us to grab the 1st place in the finals. To celebrate the sports fest 2006, different sports events were held. The highlight of which is the search for Mr. and Ms. Sports fest 2006. All of us were excited for our class representative, Chrislyn Joy Cagalitan who was seductive and bold in her cowgirl attire. With her glamorous appeal and stand out confi-dence, she was a sure winner.

Graduates ‘09 DECEMBER 2006 Our school celebrated her 91st foundation day. In consonance to the said affair, we had the ground demonstration. It was participated by every section and each was designated a theme to portray. Ours was the “dwarves and elves” and we danced to the tune of “Boom Tarat-Tarat” a popular song then by Willie Revillame. Though the song seemed baduy, we managed to grab the 3rd place in the said ground demonstration. Xempre! Kami pah! Basta saut-saot lang… masarigan guid! The said event was published in the Panay News. Dave Frades and Aura Anne Sermonia, both are our fellow classmates, were crowned as Mr. & Ms. Foundation 2006. They’re really a perfect match.

Aside from that, we also had a short musical contest, and it brought us the following awards: 2nd place in folk dance and 3rd place in duet, pop song category (Theza Jaque and Reydel Maraton).

MARCH 2007. Another year has ended. New sets of meritorious students were awarded once again. The honored list consisted of: Angel Lee Tribujenia, Aura Anne Sermonia, Dante Cabarles, Hannah Marie Anotado and Emmylou Mujal.

S.Y. 2007-2008

JUNE 2007. The school year opens once again. We’re now on our way to our last year… we launched the year with a big blast and much bombshell. New teachers are hired to replace those who had left. Sad to say, we lost good teachers and some of our avid friends but then, new ones came in. They are Kristel Ann Alimato, John Pol Fabellar, Jinelette Calumay, Mary Ann Calopez, and Larriebie Majaducon.

This year was not filled with much intrigue and fun activities…all I can say is that, “Thank God, we became more mature now!” This year we are under the advisory of our new teacher in the person of Ms. Loida Salvacion. Together with her were: Ms. Cyd Cabalar (St. Gemma), Mr. Alexis Villacastin (St. Cecilia) and Mrs. Janette Camarista (St. Gabriel).

SEPTEMBER 2007. This year’s sport fest marked a significant moment for the entire juniors. This could be fit for a record in the Guinness Book of World records. For the first time in the history of SCPS, the juniors overthrew the seniors! We have proven our worth; we overruled the championship games and overrun the titles in marathon.

OCTOBER 2007. Returning from a recharging sem-break, something in the classroom welcomed us that almost caused us to spill out our guts. “Oh! Where does that freaky yucky smell come from?” I wondered. I entered our room…surprisingly; I saw a mass of cat droppings piled scrappily atop Ma’am Salvacion’s teacher’s table. . “Ooops! Ay…ano jah? I stared at it closer. “Oh! My gosh! Ta-e gali ka kuti!” My eyes ran to the floor, “Oh! There’s more!” I couldn’t stand that terrible smell at all. Most of Ms. Salvacion’s belongings got soiled and nobody was brave enough to clean the mess.

NOVEMBER 2007. This time, we merged all our potentials to its intensity. We’re not ill-equipped at all. Our efforts in making painstakingly the tremendous props inspired by the Egyptian tombs have finally paid off. No doubt, we can see triumph within our grasp. We were so confident that we will win this time in the Araling Panlipunan Culmination. Unfortu-nately, our expectations just turned into dust and ashes. Blame it on the script? Or the characters who have skipped one part of the skit. Everything turned into a scrambled egg. Chaotic. We ended up blaming each other. It was a great catastro-phe.

DECEMBER 2007. This years’ ground demonstration brought us the following awards: 3rd place and Best in Costume. Our themes for this year’s foundation day are: Barbie present’s “The Fairytopia” (III – St. Bernadette) and “Snow White” (III – St. Cecilia). Both of us were trained by our last year’s choreographer, Nong Felix. Also during this Foundation Day, Theza Jaque and Britz Ceazar Cañonero were crowned Mr. and Ms. Foundation 2007.

After several months of cold war, finally things had been ironed out between good friends turned into bitter en-emies. Lourie Jane Calicaran patched up differences with her estranged friends-- Nikka, Lhorie Mae, Mharyam, Rhaycel, Angel and Hannah. The reason behind their misunderstanding--They left Jenjen alone at the canteen!

During the random search… everybody was in panic. Where should they hide their cell phones? But hiding it didn’t make sense at all. The cell phone of Arriane Jade Camot was confiscated even if she hid it inside a guitar. Grabe pang-amoy ni Nong Mario… tultulan na japon ba.

MARCH 2008. Another school year has ended. The ones who have worked hard finally received their merits of rec-ognition. They are Aura Anne Sermonia, Angel Lee Tribujenia, Emmylou Mujal, Dante Cabarles, and Khristyl Meij Patubo.

65S.Y 2008-2009

We are on our way to the last year of our high school life. Great opportunities and obligations are at stake. But the question is… are we prepared for the responsibilities that await us in the senior level? Our family has grown even bigger with the addition of Chris Camposagrado and Imari Faith Camiring, a transferee from Manila.

JUNE 2008. Aura Anne Sermonia was elected as the new president of the Student Republic. However, Emmylou Mujal was chosen as the executive secretary. The senatorial line up consisted of the following senior students: Theza Jaque, Angel Lee Tribujenia, Khristyl Meij Patubo, Arriane Jade Camot, and Lhorie Mae Cagandahan.

SEPTEMBER 2008. Review classes were held a few weeks before the NCAE-NSAT. Some of us took the exam seri-ously; however, most of us took it by luck. Everybody wasn’t bothered of the risk of not passing the exam.

We easily won in the overall championship game during the sportsfest. We have retained our title for two consecu-tive years. We proved how adept athletes we are.

NOVEMBER 2008. “Andaman lang ninyo, Andaman lang ninyo kun indi kamu ka perform ti mayad karon sa hapon! Indi nyo nga daan ako pagpahuy-an fourth year kay kit-anay ta lang sa pirmahanay clearance! Where’s your script? Blah…blah…blah…” says the rigorous but contemplative Ms. Rebecca Calceña. These were her familiar lines during our Aral-ing Panlipunan Culmination, reminding us now and then of our presentation for the Skitsayawit contest. We’re not in the mood to prepare for our skit, there’s no cooperation among us. But then, we tried to do our parts on stage for it will be our last performance. Anyhow, we managed to put our best feet forward and unexpectedly we got the first place. Ms. Calceña was happy of the outcome.

DECEMBER 2008. For four consecutive years, our batch dominated the royal court of the Foundation Day. This year, Eisinhower Buendia was crowned as Mr. Foundation 2009 with Gene Rose Canaya of II- St. Aloysius who was crowned as this year’s Ms. Foundation. The highlight of the Foundation Day was The High School Musical Presentation which was patterned after the movie High School Musical. The dancers and singers especially the teachers delivered their presentations intensely. It was a job well done, “congrats Ms. Ira!”

FEBRUARY 2009. We celebrated our Valentine’s Day by organizing three booths for two hours namelyf: the blind date booth, marriage booth, and dedication booth respectively. Everyone took the chance of dating their special someone. We witnessed the bridal entourage of different couples. The rest of the remaining time was spent on the highlight of the Valentines Day program which was The Search for Cupid and Psyche 2009. Kenneth Cadua of IV-St. Gabriel won as Cupid 2009 and his date was Niñylyn Calicaran of III-St. Bernadette. Tonnette Jaque of III-St. Bernadette on the other hand won as Psyche 2009 and her date was Ronalito Calantoc of I- St. Gemma. In the end, it was the marriage booth which gained lots of profits.

MARCH 2009. After three years of attending retreats in our school. Finally, we are now housed for two days and one night at Trappist Monastery in Guimaras. It is a wonderful privilege that was granted only for the graduating class in high school. It was quite expensive yet expenditures were worth it.

Secondary education is a navigation that aims to discover the missing part of our being. It is a challenge that dares to seek things that is out of the ordinary. It is a preparation to the next level of exploration and discovery. This is the region of our lives where we have nurtured the outcomes of our curiosity. Sad to say, four years in high school is forever for each student’s heart. Unforgettable experiences enveloped our lives… There are lots of happy memories… Our laughter’s, tears, and varieties of emotion reverberate in the school.

Indeed, we’re all thankful for all the people who patiently and unselfishly used their multi-powers to educate us, to empower our minds and to mold us to be a better pot. This was only a summary of almost four years of being together. The content of our history is far greater than what is printed on these pages or even what your memory can ever recall.

Graduates ‘09Foretaste of our Future

My vision blurred after I finished the last piece of document in my marble table where my name was engraved in a diamond name holder written in bold letters Atty. Alvin C. Rosal, CEO Rosal’s Marketing Firm

I gently massaged my aching temple and straightened my crumpled muscles. I looked at my latest Rolex watch and the luminous arms pointed at twelve noon sharp, I automatically realized that I just only had cereal and coffee for my breakfast. My uncontrollable hunger was already getting into my nerves. In my impulse, I reached out for the intercom and requested my confidante and my ally since high school. Franie Grace Candolada my Executive Secretary to order our lunch in the nearby restaurant just across the streets of New York. While waiting for our food to come, I stood up and walked to the crystal window of my ostentatious office and indulged in the metropolitan view of the entire America. I saw the eventful cities and untiring flow of people in different walks of life. Running after every centavo they could catch to sustain their families. I sighed and the sharp flashes of reminiscences of the past came rushing to me like lava from a catastrophic volcanic eruption.

Today is March 27, 2029. It has been twenty years since I left St. Catherine Parochial School to seek my providence in college where I took two courses: Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at the Ateneo de Manila University and A.B Law at Harvard University. Well, it has been 20 years of effort and hardships and now, here I am, the CEO of my own company. My imagination was disturbed by the sound of Franie’s voice over the intercom informing me that my order has arrived. I gave her a signal to come in and I’m shocked to discover that Franie was not alone. She was escorted by a very sexy and seductive lady wearing a chef’s uniform. I looked at the visitor from her foot upwards until my eyes landed on the black name plate on her chest where the familiar name was imprinted, executive chef Mharyam Chan, Chan’s Pasta House and Restaurant. I can’t imagine that Mharyam can have that kind of body, she was so sexy and seductive. During our high school days she was the fattest and my heavyweight classmate. Now I can conclude that life is indeed full of surprises.

We talked for a while and Mharym told me that Theza Jaque one of our fiends during high school days was now Mrs. Theza Calfoforo. And it really surprised me; I can’t imagine that the puppy love relationship will turn into marriage. “Believe it or not Alvin, they are now husband and wife and they have four children”. Mharyam said. “Wow I’m so happy for Theza, she really deserves to have a marvelous family”. I replied to Mharyam. “And you know what, they are now living in Canada and Theza is now a famous lady pilot, while her husband John Ace is an owner of a motor company together with his business partner and friend Alexan Cadiz”. Mharyam gladly said. “How great! Oh Yam, I have to go because I have a rendezvous this afternoon.” I replied. “Ok, I wish you luck”. After that, Franie and I ate our breakfast as she dictated my afternoon schedule and letters.

Before I proceeded to my appointment, I went first to church to attend mass. As I entered the church I was surprised when I saw the officiating priest. “Oh, is that Leony Cajilig?” The man behind me told me that the priest is indeed Rev. Father Leony Cajilig. And it made me feel happy, because I can’t believe that one of our classmates became a servant of God. After the mass, I went to Las Vegas to attend the conference together with the different owners of several marketing companies. When I arrived at Las Vegas, I proceeded to a five star hotel which is owned by Flor Marie Cabsaban and Rachelle Cagandahan, two of my batch mates during high school days. Then I entered the conference room and was happy to see that my classmates were also CEO’s of their respective companies. They are April May Ambonan, Donna May Caballero, Kristel Ann Alimato,Joan Alfor Mary Zharmyn Anaud, Mia

67Abadiado, Jeanette Cabunoc, Lervie Calimlim, Princess Jan Reynaldo and Junafe Cabanting. These girls were known as the Alabang Girls during high school. I also saw there Clarence Capaducio, Renel Candidier, Reydel Maraton, Christian John Gamo, Dave Frades, Leo Ross Camposagrado, Vincent Cambeliza, Herlo de los Santos, Reynald Capirayan, John Mark Tanate and Martin Camposano. We tackled during the conference how to manage our own companies and how to sustain economic stability in the world market. After three hours of assembly, I put all the supporting papers in my Louis Vuitton attaché case and went out of the conference room. I used the elevator of the hotel. As I entered the elevator, Mariane Cajilig, Ivy Joy Calasagsag and Karla Patricia Sullivan greeted me inside the glamorous elevator which can carry 1,000 people in one lifting. Even though high school life was over, these three girls still considered each other as best friends. What really friends are for! “Wow, I really admired you girls, it has been 20 years since we left our high school days, but still you remained together”. “Hahahahaha! I consider Karla and Marianne as my twin sisters, they are the wind beneath my wings” Ivy proudly said. “Believe it or not Alvin, we are already wives to our respective husbands and mothers to our dear children” Karla said. “Actually we are here to tour and explore the entire America” Marianne said. “How great, enjoy girls”. I replied.

After that conversation I went out of the elevator. Suddenly my 10,000 mega pixel touch screen cellular phone, with T.V, Internet, and with printer rings suddenly beeped. “Hello, good afternoon, this is Atty. Alvin Rosal, may I know you?” “Hi, Alvin, this is Lhorie Mae, how are you my dear friend?”. “What? Cute, is this really you? I’m so happy that you called me”. I gladly said. “Yes, this is really me, I miss you so much friend, hmmm, by the way, I’m inviting you to visit me here in Switzerland” Lhorie Mae said. “What? You are in Switzerland, the land of chocolates? Your request is granted, I’ll be there on the day after tomorrow.” I replied. “I’m so excited to see you”. Cute said. “Me too, see you soon, bye”. After that wonderful exchange there’s a bliss or exultation in my heart because finally I will meet my comrade during high school. My friend who was so generous-- so generous with her answers during exam. Then, I called my Executive Secretary Franie Grace Candolada to get me a ticket to Switzerland.

When I reached my office, Franie gave me my ticket together with a newspaper. I was surprised when I saw the headlines on the newspaper. Headlines: Filipino Computer Programmers Invented a Touch Screen with ATM Machine Lap Top! When I read the details about this spectacular invention, I was amazed. I was further amazed when I learned that the inventors of this machine was no other than John Francis Pedregoza and Eisenhower Buendia. “Wow, guys you are my idols, you made me proud of you, I’m sure that the SCPS Community would be so proud of you too.” I proudly said. Then I turned the pages of the newspaper to the sports section. I was surprised to read that the new members of the NBA are all my classmates and batch mates in high school, they are John Robert Almirante, John Pol Fabellar, Jason Capungan, Clint Kevin Cabillon, Movi Parcon, Florence Palomo, Michael Jun Profeta, Jess Chelson Samontanes and Willion Adolfo. These guys are all good in playing basketball and are all handsome basketball players.

It was already 6:30 in the evening when I left my office to go home. I went straight to my condominium unit in New York, five kilometers away from my office. After 30 minutes of travel, I finally arrived at my condo. The 200-storey posh condominium building is owned by Christy Marie Taba. When I reached my room I changed from my formal Channel clothes into a Prada shorts and a Dulce & Gabbana t-shirt. Then I had a hearty dinner, after which I switched on the television. I watched the famous Entertainment Show entitled THE HANDSOME GUYS: GEE VAN AND MARK. I always watched this show because it is hosted by the two of the most famous talk show hosts here in the United States of America, Mr. Gee Van Talero and Mr. Mark Anthony Gaces. After watching this fantastic show, I arranged my clothes into my Louis Vuitton travelers bag because tomorrow is my flight to Switzerland. I called it a day and promptly fell to a deep sleep.

Graduates ‘09 It was exactly five o’clock in the morning the next day when my alarm clock waked me up. I took a quick shower, ate my breakfast and I proceeded to New York International Airport. When I arrived in the fabulous and magnificent airport, a familiar-looking girl seated beside the baggage area caught my attention. She looked so dignified in a formal dress with matching eye glasses. Then I was surprised to know that she is Princess Michelle Cachero, a Certified Public Accountant, and now the owner of Cachero’s United Coconut Planters Bank. I greeted Princess and after that I was on board the plane going to Switzerland. While seated, a sexy and gorgeous flight attendant offered me a drink. “Sir, good morning, coffee or juice” asked the flight attendant. “Hmmm, juice Miss. By the way, you look so familiar, may I know your name? ”I replied. “I’m Chrislyn Joy Cagalitan sir”. “What? Chrislyn, Is that you? It’s me, Alvin.” “Nice to see you again Vin, it has been 20 years since we’ve last seen each other.” Chrislyn said. “Wow, I’m so proud of you, look at yourself, you are so beautiful.” I replied. “Thanks for the compliment Vin”. Suddenly, one of the passengers called Chrislyn for her assistance and we simply had to end our conversation. That time Chrislyn also told me that Ana Marie Encarguez and Jennelyn Cabalse are also Flight Stewardesses in another airline company. She told me also that the pilot of the airplane that we are currently boarding is no other than Paul John Cabanalan also a classmate of ours. After six hours of travel, we finally arrived at Switzerland. As I went out of the airplane I was amazed to see the fabulous Switzerland International Airport. I found myself amidst the sea of hundreds of faces. Then Rhaycel Pasaylo welcomed me gracefully, she is now a Tourist Guide here in Switzerland and earns 500,000 US Dollars monthly. Then I was shocked when Rhaycel told me that Chris Camposagrado is now the Congressman of the 2nd District of Iloilo. I can’t imagine that Chris had reached that kind of position. Being a public servant is not an easy task, you need to be responsible of your words and actions. And I believe Chris can do it.

Rhaycel guided me throughout the airport and to the beautiful sceneries in Switzerland. We went also to one of the famous museums in Switzerland; there we saw the artistic and unique artwork of the now famous painters Ian Mhel Pascua and Lharibie Majaducon. I felt reinvigorated; it’s time for me to relax after putting myself on hard work in New York. When I saw the wonderful spots in Switzerland, I remembered my hometown, the place where Alvin Rosal was born and raised to become a multi-billionaire lawyer.The magnificent town of Leon in the Philippines. For that was the very place where I met my genuine and amorous friends. Because of them, I experienced how to love and to be loved. Because of them I clearly fathomed the true meaning and essence of living. But it is sad to say that each of us now has his own journey in life to take, each of us has his own plans and goals to pursue in life. We are all busy in our fields of interest but it is not a hindrance to keep in touch with each other again. Having this in mind, I planned to set a grand reunion for the most memorable batch that has ever passed the gateways of St. Catherine Parochial School, the Batch 2008-2009.

My breathtaking imagination was disturbed when my cellular phone rang. “Hello, Lhorie Mae, I am here now in Switzerland, this place is so fantastic! By the way, where are we going to meet, because I have a wonderful plan”. “Really, I’m excited to know your wonderful plan, let’s meet in a restaurant owned by our classmate Aura Anne Sermonia it’s located in Bern, the name of the restaurant is Aura’s Original Filipino Cuisine”. Lhorie Mae gladly said. “OK, I’ll be there” I replied. After that wonderful exchange of words I called for a taxi and proceeded to the said restaurant. When inside the restaurant, I can say that it’s as if I am just eating in a typical restaurant in the Philippines. The atmosphere is so homely, so very Filipino. Aura made me proud of her; she built a restaurant that the Filipinoes can be proud of. The restaurant was serving an original Filipino cuisine and the utensils being used there are all made of native bamboo and coconut materials. After a few minutes, Lhorie Mae had arrived. Lhorie Mae now is the owner of NESTLE CORPORATION IN SWITZERLAND. We ordered and ate our lunch, after eating a sumptuous meal; we listened and enjoyed the music of the famous international band named FERBAK. The band was composed of Russell Barcenilla, Britz Ceazar Canonero, Andrian Nhel Calopez and Kenneth Cadua. Lhorie Mae and I

69really loved their Rock Music. Then I confided to Lhorie Mae my wonderful plan. “Lhorie, what if we set a grand reunion or homecoming for our Alma Mater, the St. Catherine Parochial School?” “That’s a great idea, it’s the time that everybody else has been waiting for” Lhorie Mae answered. “ It would not be just a simple Grand Reunion, we all know that all our classmates are now very successful in their chosen careers and fields of endeavor, so we will be having a Grand Reunion with a medical and dental mission” I replied. “That would be a great help to our fellow Catherinians.” Lhorie Mae concluded. Due to the global crisis that the world is facing right now, we want to help those people in need. We want to share the blessings that God has given us. Even in simple ways, we can make people smile especially those who are losing hope. That is why we are making this event happen.

After that discussion, we laid down all the things needed for our Grand Reunion with medical and dental mission. We disseminated a letter to all our classmates and batch mates informing about this spectacular event. Since that Fatima Gift Amiana is a Pharmacist and the new owner of the WATSONS Drugstore, she donated a lot of medicines for our medical and dental mission. Then Dr. Rizzel Anne Samontanes DMD. offered her services to the said event. Hannah Marie Anotado, Ma. Theresa Margarette Capaciete, Emmylou Mujal, Khrystel Meij Patubo, Imari Faith Camiring, Rose Belle Leyritana and Mary Anne Calopez who are all Nurses now working abroad also offered their services. Then, the lady dentists Arriane Jade Camot and Nikka Charmaine Macero also lent their hands. The multi-billionaire businesswoman and the owner of a Pocket Book Company Ms. Angel Lee Tribujenia gave her financial assistance to us. Our seafarer classmates also helped us financially they are Dante Cabarles, Erick Allan Tanate, Joephel Capungan, Ralph Sales, Jayrom Cajara, Lourie Jane Calicaran and Noemilyn Cantallopez.

After a month, the moment that we’ve been waiting for had finally come. The Grand Reunion of the Batch 2008-2009 with a medical and dental mission finally arrived. This spectacular event was started by a mass officiated by Rev.Father Leony Cajilig. After the mass, we had the Medical and Dental Mission. At that time, I can’t measure the exultation inside my heart. It was a great privilege and it was an honor for me to help my fellow Catherinians and fellow Leonians. I was in cloud nine at that time because after 20 years of struggling abroad, here we are now, standing at the very place where we were molded and developed to become what we are now. Through this institution, we discovered the wonderful things in our lives. Lastly, we are very grateful for having St. Catherine Parochial School as the foundation of our dreams and for being the wind beneath our wings. See you on the next 20 years of magnificent happenings in our lives.

DEAR CLASSMATES, this is just a class prophecy, this is only an example of what may happen in our future. There is an old adage that says “Success comes to those who take time and strive for excellence.” Graduation is not the end of everything; instead this is the start of a new journey. Let’s strive harder so that we can achieve all our dreams and goals in our lives.

Graduation does not mean losing a friend; it means strengthening our relationships and gaining new friends in our new journey. To our dear mentors and teachers, sorry if we caused you a lot of heartaches and headaches as well, but still we appreciate all the teachings and the good values that you have imparted to us. Indeed, we realized that being a teacher is incomparable. As you care for your students, you learn how to cover your own sorrows with a smile. You learn how to stay happy despite all the tasks that you have to endure. You learn how to give hope even though yours are unclear. You learn how to give strength even at times you are the ones who are weak. Thus, nobody will know what kind of life a teacher has unless he/she becomes one. Finally thank you for being our second parents, a teacher and especially for being our FRIEND.

Life is a road, I wanna keep going. Life is a river I wanna keep flowing. Life is a road now and forever, wonderful Journey.

This is just a simple song dedicated to all of us. Our four years in high school is over. I just can’t believe that we are now graduating. Four years have been too short for all of us to spend the time with each other. My dear classmates, we are now on board to take our flight to a new world. A world full of new challenges and a new set of trials for us to overcome. It’s sad to say

that we are going to leave our beloved school…The Saint Catherine Parochial School. It’s heart-breaking, right? But we have to face it, whether we like it or not. Saying goodbye is a part of every person’s life.

Before we finally make our take off, we would like to say a MILLION THANKS to all the people who are always behind us, and did their very best in making us better citizens of society as we face the vicissitudes of our high school life. To Fr. Emman, who’s very supportive and never neglected us, thank you so much! To the teaching force and staff who served as our 2nd Nanays and Tatays, who never fails understand our complaints about everything in our lessons, projects, “aramutans,” etc. To Sir Jonie and Ma’am Marcie, who were always there during our ups and downs, for the knowledge and for the worthy advises you had imparted to us. Sorry if we’ve caused you a lot of pains and headaches. To the wonder women and supermen of our lives, our Nanays and Tatays, Mamas and Papas, and Mommies and Daddies, thank you so much for providing for our needs, for being always there despite our shortcomings, our being “pasaways” and most of all, for the unconditional love that you’ve showed to us.
