RAISE THE ROOF

A big thank you for all the help so far!

In 2011 the Village Hall Committee launched the Raise the Roof

campaign to raise funds to provide an insulated eco-roof for the hall.

Thanks to all of you who have supported the campaign and attended

the various events we have run.

Scotton Village Hall has a very special history, having been built by people

from the village in 1977, the Queen’s Silver Jubilee year. Since then, the

hall has become an integral part of life in the village. The fundraising,

planning and construction back in the 1970s were achieved through great

community effort and spirit. We are happy to say that this remains today.

The path since then, however, has not been without its challenges and the

hall has faced good times and bad over the years. Thanks to the

community, the committee and support from the parish council, the hall

has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Today we can be proud

of a lovely building which hosts a variety of exciting activities and events

from badminton to ballroom dancing, and guitar to Zumba!

The committee has undertaken a number of improvements to the hall,

including a refurbished kitchen, disabled facilities, new windows, lighting

and heating, all of which have benefited our many users. The latest

campaign, to secure an eco-roof, is the most ambitious project since the

hall was built. Thanks to all your help and support, an amazing £4,636.95

has been raised so far! The committee is now considering the best value

for money option for an eco-roof and will keep you informed of progress.

We are proud of the hall and will work to retain its special status in the

community.

Bowled over Did you know that the Hall is the home venue of Knaresborough

Short Mat Bowling Club? The game, which started in Ireland, is

played on a 45 ft long, 5ft wide mat with a 15-inch block

midway down the mat.

The club offers the opportunity to play competitively in local

leagues and at county and national level. There is no obligation

to play at this level and many play socially. The season is from

September to March, but the club plays throughout the

summer season. The club runs one-day social events, many in

conjunction with other clubs and also away weekends. Bowling

opens avenues for new friendships as well as the opportunity to

test your bowling skills against other players.

Secretary, Derek Beardsley says “without the facilities of

Scotton Village Hall we would not be able to enjoy the sport we

all love. The committee over the years has responded in a very

positive manner to any request we have made and they deserve

every support in their latest venture to raise funds for the roof

renovation.”

The club meets three times a week at Scotton, Monday 7.00 to

10.00pm and Wednesdays and Fridays 1.15 to 4.00pm. We also

bowl at Knaresborough Community Centre on a Thursday night

from 7.00 to 10.00pm. Derek says “new members are always

welcome and I assure you once you give it a go you will be

craving for more! The photo shows some of our bowlers in

action. Why not come and join us!” More info: Derek Beardsley,

Pilates – Friday mornings 9.30 -10.30 am

The Pilates technique is designed to strengthen and lengthen the body. Most of the exercises are performed lying

down on a mat after a brief standing warm-up. The focus is on stabilising with the strong central muscles to allow

movement to flow more freely. With regular practice and control, Pilates moves can firm the stomach, improve

posture and increase flexibility and strength encouraging a clear, relaxed mind. It is also an excellent way of

relaxing and socialising as the class is friendly and non-competitive. All equipment is provided. £5 per session.

RAISE THE ROOF

Dancing the night away! The village hall was full to capacity for last

November’s sell-out concert featuring the Droughty

band which raised £2,531.70 towards the new roof.

Close to 120 people enjoyed a candle lit supper

followed by some energetic ceilidh dancing as the

evening progressed.

The Committee would like to thank not only all those

who supported the event by attending, but in

particular the generosity of the sponsors and those

who donated a wonderful selection of prizes for the

auction: Carl Hainsworth, Chris and Stan Sandig,

Emma and James Old, Warner Leisure Hotels, TM

Sport, Jenny Whiteley, the Tiger Inn, the Village Hall

Committee, John and Yvonne Bonner, the Malt

Shovel Inn, the General Tarleton, the Almond family,

Shirley Knowles, Jane Spink, Colin Hespin, La-Rock

Construction, Tarts and Tortes, Compass Lighting

Design, and Laurie the lighting man, as well as the

helpers in the kitchen, behind the bar and as waiters.

Due to popular demand, the Droughty Band will be

returning to the hall on 17 November 2012. Get

Feast on this!

Back in June, many of the Scotton Feast activities, including maypole dancing and singing, ended up being held in the hall, thanks to the wet summer. The proceeds of the teas, coffees and cakes went to the Raise the Roof campaign. Thanks to all who took part!

Thank you

Club 40 Dancing has very kindly donated £400 towards the Raise the Roof campaign. Thank you for your support.
