VALOR MILITARY DEGREE TEAM ACTIVATED
"Real VALOR consists not in being insensible to danger; but in being prompt to confront and
disarm it."
So saith Brother Sir Walter Scott, Scottish Novelist, Poet, Historian and Biographer (1771-1832),during the emerging years of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite in America, which as "The
Order of the Royal Secret ... transmitted from Bordeaux in France through the West Indies to the
American mainland, were [it] established at New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1763; at Albany, New York,in 1767; at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1781-82; and at Charleston, South Carolina, in 1783,
cumulating in the opening of the first modern Scottish RiteSupreme Councilon May 31, 1801.
The Lodge in which Sir Walter Scott was initiated into Freemasonry was constituted on the 2nd ofMarch, 1738, by the "M.W. Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Scotland" under the name
"Canongate Kilwinning from Leith,"which was changed in 1756 to St. David. "At an Emergency
Meeting, held on Monday, the 2nd of March, 1801, the same year the first Supreme Councilwasopen, "Walter Scott was initiated, passed, and raised inLodge St. David."
Drawing from the beginning[VAL]and end[OR]of our name, theValley of Pittsburgh Legion of
Honor, our Scottish Rite Military Degree Team has adopted and desires to exemplify the concept ofVALOR in its name and in its deeds. Therefore, our VALOR Military Degree Team has been
formed to encourage worthy potential Brothers with Military affiliations to look favorably upon ourHonorable Fraternity, and to give them the opportunity of having their First, Second and Third
Masonic Degrees conferred on them by kindred spirits, thus reinforcing in them that our Honorable
Fraternity embodies the same principles of valor and honor that they strove for in their military
service.
The VALOR Military Degree Team, under the able direction of Honorary Colonel-Conductor and
Thrice Potent Master Bob Addleman, Jr., and School of Instruction Instructor Brother Walter J.Dominek, has "valiantly" commenced an intense schedule of monthly rehearsals "to be ready to
confer these degrees upon Active Duty Personnel, Military Retirees, Reservist and Veterans, asrequested by the Worshipful Masters of Blue Lodges within the Valley of Pittsburgh," announcedValley of Pittsburgh Legion of Honor Commander Charles Donahue. "While proper dispensations
for specific conferrals need to be obtained, the R.W. Grand Master has generally approved our
Military Degree Team, together with our use of uniforms and military movements."
To be eligible for the VALOR Military Degree Teamyou must be a Scottish Rite Mason and a
Veteran, Reservist or Military Retiree of, or on Active Duty in a Military Service of the United
States or an Allied Nation; and have proficiency, or commit to acquire proficiency in at least one ofthe degrees, or a part thereof, as assigned. All members of the VALOR Military Degree Teamwill
receive Military Degree Team insignia as commissioned, and if not already members, will receive
complimentary first year Legion membership.
