Humanitarian and charitable causes are a core value of every Mason. It should, therefore, be no surprise that the Valley of Chicago has been one of the longest running participants in the Chicago version of “Bike MS.” This annual event is the premier fundraising cycling series in the nation, organized by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Between 2,800 and 3,000 bicyclists have participated for one or both days to raise money to help end multiple sclerosis. And for 30 plus consecutive years, the Valley of Chicago has sponsored a bike team and provided volunteers for a rest stop for both days of the Chicago event.

“The MS Association recently held an Awards and Recognition Night. I was proud to represent the Valley of Chicago. Our Scottish Rite Cycling team rode 35-100 miles over two days to raise funds. Thank you to our riding team captain Bro. Timothy Reed, and especially to our volunteer team. I’m very proud, thankful and grateful that our team supported over 3,000 cyclists at three rest stops. Collectively, $3.5 Million was raised over the weekend in June of 2018. None of this would have been possible without everyone’s time, energy and commitment. THANK YOU!!! And a big “Shout-out” to my Co-Chair, Mark Victoria, and to Debbie Pasiewicz for all the constant admin and field support!!!”

Feast of the Paschal Lamb

Crossing the BarS unset and evening star, And one clear call for me!

And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea.

B ut such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam,

When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home!

T wilight and evening bell, And after that the dark!

And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark;

For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far,

I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar.

In 2001, the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library purchased this impressive assemblage of tintypes and ambrotypes of members of an unidentified Mason lodge from a Massachusetts antiques dealer. Each of the photographs is displayed in its own individual frame within the larger frame that measures 21 ¾ by 38 ¼ inches. The names and ages of the men pictured are written on the reverse of almost every photograph in the frame. Many of the men’s cheeks were tinted pink—as was commonly found in photographs of this era. At the center of the collection of images is a photograph of a Bible topped with the Masonic square and compasses. According to the seller, the framed portraits dated from the 1860’s and likely originated from a New Hampshire lodge. In the past year, research volunteer Robert Brown uncovered the story behind this photograph.

To initially identify where the photographed men were from, Bob checked the names on the back of the photographs against U.S. Federal Census data from 1860-1880. The search revealed that fifty-two of the fifty-six men photographed lived near Peterborough, New Hampshire, around the time the portraits were taken. The ages noted on the photographs, when compared to the ages of the men as recorded in the census helped to date the images to between 1860 and 1863.

One Masonic lodge met in Peterborough in the 1860s—Altemont Lodge No. 26. Eleven of the names on the back of the photographs matched up with the names of members of Altemont Lodge noted in the Proceedings of the Grand Lodge of New Hampshire, suggesting that the collection of photographs portrayed members of that lodge. Chartered in Dublin, New Hampshire, in 1815, the lodge moved to Peterborough in 1827. The lodge did not meet from 1833 to 1840, but revived in 1848. By the early 1860’s the lodge appeared to be doing well. In minutes preserved at the Peterborough Library, the lodge secretary recorded “remarks from several Brothers in regard to having our miniatures taken and placed in the Lodge Room,” in March of 1861. At the next meeting, members agreed to pay for a “Miniature Frame” out of lodge funds and approved a motion that “every Master Mason in regular standing in town”—be they a member of Altemont Lodge or not—“be invited to deposit their

Altemont Lodge No.26 in Peterborough, New Hampshire

Ambrotypes with those of the Brothers of the Lodge.” The frame cost the lodge $7. Members paid for their own photographs displayed within the frame. To have their portraits taken, lodge members may have worked with George H. Scripture, a Peterborough photographer. Raised in Soughegan Lodge in Masonville, New Hampshire, Scripture’s own portrait appears in the frame. He joined Altemont Lodge in 1865.

Though we do not know what prompted the brethren of Altemont Lodge to assemble their portraits, they displayed their collected portraits with pride when they moved into a new meeting room in the new Peterborough Town Hall in 1864. Their preserved photographs help tell the story of their lodge and are an unusual example of a Masonic portrait.

LET IT BE KNOWN BY ALL, Ill. Howard L. Graff, 33°, has been summoned by the Supreme Architect of the Universe to eternal refreshment in the paradise of God on January 21, 2019. Howard’s Masonic affiliations included Mystic Tie Chapter No. 245, Order of the Eastern Star and Lux ex Oriente Council No. 379, Allied Masonic Degrees. He was active in the York Rite in Wilmette and Glenview. As a Noble of Medinah Temple, AANOMS, he was a member of the Past Masters Unit and other activities over the years. 1924 Grandfather ClockIn 2016 Ill. Charles F. Gambill, 33°, donated to the Valley of Chicago an antique grandfather clock which had been in his family for four generations.

Manufactured by the Herschede Hall Clock Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, this deluxe model known as the “Grand Prize” bears serial no. 19038, dating it to 1924. The clock now adorns the Scottish Rite Cathedral’s Grand Hallway, where its chimes will remind Sublime Princes of the Royal Secret that the hour is always NOW.

The clock’s 80-inch-tall mahogany case is flanked by two Corinthian columns. The ornate clock face features a lunar phase dial and selection of Westminster, Whittington or Canterbury chimes played on an eight-tube array, with a ninth tube used for hourly chimes. The Canterbury melody was composed c.1913 by Charles Eisen, an American pianist, especially for Herschede.

Incorporated in 1902, Herschede Hall Clock Company won medals for design and engineering excellence at several major expositions. Prior to the Great Depression, the firm had about 300 employees. Herschede made precision equipment for the military during World War II, and afterward resumed clock production.

The Scottish Rite - Valley of Chicago Museum and Library is fortunate to have accumulated a valuable collection of artifacts through generous donations. It is our goal to preserve these pieces and provide the members the historical significance of your collection.

Two members, Bro. Howard Graff, 33° and Bro. Charles “Chuck” Gambill 33°, agreed that preservation of Masonic history was of the utmost importance. They have donated hundreds of pieces to the Scottish Rite. In their honor, we will be compiling the history on some fascinating donations by Bro. Gambill and Bro. Graff. Let’s begin with the Grandfather clock that stands in our Grand Hallway.

“This magnificent gift is just one of over 70 artifacts donated through Chuck’s generosity and dedication to Scottish Rite and the Masonic fraternity,” said Ill. William E. Tienken, 33°.

The Valley of Chicago is making 2019 the year of the Blue Lodge. The VOC is committed to supporting Blue Lodges across the North East Area through events, and the drive for new members. These Lodges form the foundation of Freemasonry and are the bedrock in which our Scottish Rite is built. Without Blue Lodges, there is no Scottish Rite. The VOC will be extending a hand in any way possible so that all branches of Freemasonry can flourish together for many years to come. To that end, the theme of the 2019 Spring Reunion will draw upon one of the most memorable and vital lines of ritual in our Blue Lodge Catechism, “In whom do you put your trust?” The entire event will revolve around the essential principles taught in the first three degrees.

In making this application, I promise on my word of honor that should I be elected and become a member of your honorable Body, I subscribe to the following

Oath of Fealty“I, the undersigned, do hereby promise on my word of honor, and swear true faith, allegiance, and fealty to the Supreme Council of Sovereign Grand Inspectors General of Thirty-third and Last Degree of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the United States of America, sitting at its Grand East in the Town of Lexington, Massachusetts, of which the Illustrious John Wm. Building the Future of the Valley of ChicagoWe’re excited to share our new website with you! From the initial brainstorming to the final launch the goal of our new website was to have members feel more engaged and empowered when it comes to participating in our fraternity. We heard your requests to create an online presence that provided more information about the fraternity and what was happening at the Valley of Chicago. It was also requested to develop a portal for members, as well as for masons interested in joining the craft to have a richer and more meaningful knowledge about the Scottish Rite and the Valley of Chicago. This first phase brings together a robust site packed with information that you requested. Phase II will include a member portal with event details and registration links, photo gallery, and much more!

New Website!
